  1. What do you mean by ok? please explain further. How do their performances vary? Please quantify! what kind of beast are you talking about? be more specific you younger old fart! LOL LOL LOL You can't get away with that stuff here . You know better - the engineer is watching you.
  2. I probably should have but I actually have found notin to be tolerable some of the time. When he gets into his "I'm smarter than everyone else" mode than I tend to lash out.
  3. You shouldn't even be posting in this conversation. For a stat guy, I find your viewpoints refreshing most of the time. You have actually admitted being wrong on occasion just like the rest of us old guys who just don't get it.
  4. Your kidding right notin? one - whether it has been said or not it sure as s*** has been implied numerous times. two- you are forgetting who you are dealing with I'm afraid. Remember me - I could care less what you think or what you say. I have no intention of going back through reams of talksox pages to prove any particular point. three - I was communicating with a forum board friend not you. four - I would repeat what I previously said before but it would take me too much time.
  5. You know why I posted this. I want him back at second in the worst way. You and I might disagree with what should be done with JBJ if he continues to not hit but I think that Pedroia's influence on our record is not a whole lot different than what JBJ's has been to date. Don't get me wrong, I am still in favor of keeping and using him though. I just don't buy the arguement that he has played a non replaceable role for us so far.
  6. I would hope so for God's sake. I'm thinking unfortunately though that form the sounds of things, there are plenty of people here who think that they have all of the answers to most things.
  7. Really Bellhorn - Who said anything about ignoring all statistics? That is not the point. I think that we all know that if you love the game you have to have an appreciation for that statistics of it as well. The point for me is that we all have something to contribute and that no one is ever completely right nor completely wrong. Do you think that someone who chooses to ignore the all things metrically quantifiable approach doesn't have an appreciation for the basic statistics of the game? You know better than that.
  8. There are any number of ways I guess at looking at things. I'm kind of thinking that Castillo might be an upgrade to JBJ right now for instance but because of luxury tax implications we know that isn't happening. We have a very good record to date so of course it gives justification for not making any moves at the present time. That is an arguement that we hear daily over and over again. If it is an appropriate argument and we hold a pat hand without looking to improve obvious weak areas, here is a though - Maybe Pderoia should be left right down there in Pawtucket since we are doing such a great job without him. I bet that thought would get a lot of support! lol
  9. You said this eloquently. I wish that I had. I love the basic statistics of the game just not so much with the advanced metrics. I don't believe that it has to turn into a discussion that leads anyone to believe that if something cannot be proven statistically that it just can' t be real. I'm like you I guess in that I don't think that an overdose in statistical minutia leads to an enhancement of the game. In my opinion, there is still something very special in just sitting back and watching and developing an opinion based upon what you see.
  10. I'm wondering if there is a stat that measures the number of times that a catcher (Leon or Vazquez) moves (frames) a pitched ball that is literally on the black of the strike zone to influence an umpire's decision? It really looks to me that we have had a number of pitches that could very well have been called strikes that perhaps weren't because of that slight movement. Of course it is important to have catchers that are good at framing pitches but sometimes it looks to me that it might be over done by both of our guys. There might be a few umps out there who won't call what looks to be a strike if that ball is moved.
  11. Probably need to add that I understand being patient with JBJ primarily because of our current record even though I don't think that his contributions have much to do with it. if we continue to win, so be it. I hope that we do but ultimately we do have some situations that we have to deal with. Swihart - JBJ - Castillo (regardless of who signed him and regardless of luxury tax implications).
  12. I also think that Swihart leaving one way or another right or wrong is inevitable. I think that with the way things are going that it is a logical way to look at things. The big question as you have asked is if why are we keeping him? Looks like he has virtually no role on this team. Keeping him and just sitting him day after day as well as comtting to play a center fielder who isn't hitting .200 makes us look a little joke like regardless of the record. It makes no sense.
  13. JBJ is really feeble at the plate right now and he needs to own that. I hope that he is. He got a great ovation from the fans yesterday after he got his hit. Not sure how he took that. If he comes off as being arrogant or stubborn with respect to his current pathetic play, fans will eventually turn and he will be gone. He probably still has us - we all want him to succeed for him as well as the team. If he gets through this crap situation and still comes off as someone who likes playing here, he will survive .
  14. Ted constantly faced shifts. They really bugged him but he continued to hit into, through, and over them obviously on a regular basis.
  15. I think for sure that JBJ will get more time but I doubt very much that it has anything to do with his prior track record. He is one of the few options that we have to use in our outfield and he is virtually untradeable unless he is given away. He certainly can field his position more than adequately but his "hot streaks" when they occur or if they occur again may not be enough to justify keeping him around a whole lot longer. We all hope that he starts to hit.
  16. Martinez does not surprise me. He is a big guy who is a student of hitting. He is the power hitter. Mookie Betts amazes me. He very well might be the best hitter in the game today. Maybe even the best baseball player. He is without a doubt the face of this franchise.
  17. I understand how you feel and I am sure that much of what JBJ is going through has to be mental. Ive always cheered for him and supported him. I also really don't think that the Red Sox have many options for him right now. Sorry for this but I can not get the fact that he is a lifetime .234 hitter out of my mind. He is no where near that figure now and it is very sad. We are all kind of stuck with each other for now but if he doesn't at least start to make some contact soon you have to think that his road in Boston might be coming to an end.
  18. We are what 37 games in and our career .234 lifetime hitter is not hitting .165. We all appreciate what he can give us defensively but if he does not snap out of this soon playing him regularly out there will just look foolish. Hands are tied I guess just a bit. Hope he starts to get it done. The truth of the matter is that he absolutely looks lost at the plate. I don't see him turning it around - I really hope that I am wrong.
  19. Makes sense to me. I don't want to see JD out there everyday but his fielding ability has not hurt this team at all. Having him in left and moving Beni to center has not cost this team any wins. It would be great to have JBJ in cf for sure but at this point sadly he looks like the hitter his stats say he is.
  20. Much of this I think depends on where in the batting order Betts feels more comfortable. If he is happy leading off I say why not. I think that his RBI total would look quite a bit better if we had something, anything, hitting in front of him.
  21. Too funny Slasher! good one - Ben who?
  22. I call ******** on anybody who gives me a "small sample size" call with respect to JBJ.
  23. Now that is a tough one. Guess I would have to go with Dewey in a photo finish but what the hell I'd take Freddie over JBJ all day.
  24. Probably not notin - sometimes you just have to keep putting one foot in front of another.
