  1. One thing that has kind of gone under the radar is that lately he has been fielding his position pretty well. He has made 11 errors to date I think. When was his last one? He is our third baseman. I think that he will be just fine.
  2. For sure - maybe the extra work he put in while in Houston really did help. I hope he keeps it up.
  3. seviceable - What exactly does that mean? No one is saying that he is a gold glover out there but in my world serviceable isn't much of a compliment. He is better than that and it is ok if people can say that maybe the "metrics" were misleading. It isn't always about what you have done in the past, it is about what you are dong right now. He will sit again when Mookie returns and that is ok. As for the statistics/sabermetrics point of view: JD is currently batting third - Cora uses the hit and run - Our guys aren't opposed to stealing bases. Does Cora just not get it or what? The approach to the game has changed and saber metrics have contributed to some of those changes. I believe in their use but I also think that some traditional approaches to the game are just as valuable.
  4. The constant comments telling us how lousy he is out there have stopped flooding in. He has done a very good job.
  5. me - I do
  6. There have been a couple here who have mentioned Barnes throwing at Machado's head. You have no idea what spot Barnes was trying to hit. I wouldn't be so quick to assume something like this. I felt at the time the wrong guy was being asked to throw at someone anyway. I would have liked to have seen someone with a little more experience doing that job if in fact the intention was to hit him at all. Don't ask a youngster to do a big boy's job.
  7. Ok Max - How many posters here are actually crying over Swihart not being our starting catcher? 1 maybe 2 you think. You really are starting to make this sound as though anyone who supports Swihart must think that he should be a starter for this team. I don't get the sense that that is the case at all. Some of us would just like to see this kid get a little more of a chance than he already has.
  8. We are not going to find out what Swihart has until he gets regular at bats. Every third, fourth, or fifth day isn't going to get it done. I feel really bad for the kid. if the goal is to trade him, he is going to have to play to show people that he can in fact play. Hanging on to him just for security purposes kind of sucks for him. I wish that they would release or trade this kid if they are not going to play him. If he was given or had been given the same opportunities that Ramirez was given this spring, we might all have been surprised by what he could do. Just hanging on to him looks kind of sad to me.
  9. Hanley was released for a number of reasons. Some being more important than others. I don't think the owners of this franchise owe any fan any explanation for what they did in this case. When the local store stops selling products that I like, I pretty much have to go to another store to get what I need. They don't ask for my input. Cora and DD gave an explanation because that seems to be what everybody has to do these days.
  10. has anybody even picked Hanley up yet?
  11. Your sarcasm sensor is on high alert. I was just sick of being ignored. lol
  12. Max - you thought that I implied that Swihart would be the best hitter on our team? I really hope not but whatever I guess.
  13. If they had been perfectly truthful, they would have said the vesting option was a factor for sure. I bet they thought we could figure that one out though on our own.
  14. Could be over the top Max - it is just my opinion. I would be willing to bet a bit though that if he had the same number of at bats as the rest of the non-hitters, yes I think that he would outhit them. For me to make this statement is not over the top Max. I'm pretty sure that you are familiar with the expression "tighter than the bark on a tree" - that is me.
  15. I'm thinking that I agree with you but what I have to say is that we still need that guy at second base. I doubt that he ever wanted to even be considered a leader anyway. I think that he just wants to play as hard as he can on every play. I think that there a lot of things that we care about that he could give a s*** about. I think that he just wants to be between the lines.
  16. Truthfully I think that they could both play for us right now but we all know that that ain't happening.
  17. I'm just trying to look at it realistically. No one has said one goddamned thing about the two line drives he ripped last night. I think the world of JBJ but I cringe when he comes to the plate. I'm pleased that recently Vazquez and Leon have started to show some signs of life. I think that Devers will be just fine given time. I think Swihart certainly has the potential to outhit any of them if given the chance.
  18. Swihart is cannon fodder tomorrow night. No one wants to beat up the two starting catchers so Swihart gets the nod. I can't wait but I feel a little sorry for him. Doesn't look like a good situation to me. If he can't deal with knuckleballer, we all get to hear what a s***** catcher he is. Poor bastard. I hope he catches a great game and pounds the snot out of the ball.
  19. I think that everybody was hoping against hope that Hanley was going to be able to turn back the clock. I think that one of the reasons Swihart was kept was in fact because Hanley just wasn't getting the job done. I think that there are some people trying to read to much into the Hanley saga. A mid 30 year veteran who wasn't getting the job done who had a 20 plus million dollar vesting option that was going to kick in if he go X number of at bats. Very well might have been worth to us if he had been hitting. He wasn't and he is gone. It was a baseball/business decision.
  20. I truly believe that if Hanley had hit he would still be here. To say that the existence of the vesting option coupled with his inability to get the job done both were not factors in his release would be naive on my part I think. In all honesty, I don't spend much time thinking about these things. Teams do what they have to do. We may possibly wind up getting more production from the guys taking Hanley's place than he was going to give us. Now if this were the late 70's and we were talking about management allowing Fisk, Lynn, and Burleson to leave, I might have more to say.
  21. I enjoyed reading what you had to say. We need Pedroia of course it only follows that all of a sudden he has turned into that great leader all of a sudden that he really has never been. He is a tough assed player and we do need him but I won't be forgetting that crap incident anytime soon. It is over now and doesn't need to be rehashed.
  22. I mentioned earlier that it was good to see Swihart not just hit the ball last night, it was good to see him rip the ball in those two at bats. Altuve looked a little shocked last night with the one he caught. I don't know where he will get the playing time he needs, but I would be willing to bet that he will get his bat on many more balls then Vazuez, Leon, and JBJ combined have so far this year. We are off to an incredible start. The back end of that lineup on occasion has looked pathetic at the plate but we have survived and have been helped by what they give us in the field. Sooner or later someone is going to profit from having his bat in their lineup.
  23. Here I was reading along and having a good time with my old memories and you turned it ugly.
  24. I'm hearing you say that being humble might not be a trait of the typical Yankee fan. I agree with you by the way.
  25. He might be covered in a platoon very nicely by Travis and Swihart. Thankfully Cora tends to believe that if you are decent hitter, you ought to be able to hit both lefties and righties. I loved the contact Swihart made last night against a very good arm. Two solid rips basically up the middle. As for Sam Travis, I'm not ready to let his Pawtucket stats of this spring influence me much. He is a lot better than that. Being injured had a lot to do with his poor production. Bet you had fun the last couple of nights.
