After Stearns signs with the Mets, a reporter asks Bloom if it's true the Red Sox were in the bidding for Stearns. "Yes, we made what we thought was a very strong, very competitive offer to David to come in and replace me, but we fell a little short. So now we move forward with what we have, which in this case means me."

Well, there were plenty of big money acquisitions in 2013 and 2015. There was no long-term rebuilding plan apparent IMHO. I don't see a big change from the Theo years.

The parallels between the "records" of Cherington and Bloom are indeed notable. But Cherington wasn't really brought in to take the team in a new direction. He was just the logical in-house successor to Theo. Bloom was supposed to represent a major change in philosophy, and one that would take some time to implement.

As much heat as I've been putting on Bloom, canning him now, after going through all this, would only confirm that Henry has totally lost it.

The Red Sox under Bloom are obviously trying to run things in a businesslike way and make wise decisions. Are they succeeding? Hard to say. The farm is improving, yes, and the payroll is more or less under control. But the payroll is still pretty high, they've invested $550 million in 3 players, and they're a .500 team for the second year in a row.

OTOH maybe John Henry became too gun-shy about big contracts and luxury tax, and that played a big role in things like losing Mookie Betts and putting .500 teams on the field in his new CBO's 3rd and 4th years with the team.

Definitely. That and the big race for 4th place with the Yanks are the only things of interest for Sox fans now.

Padres are over for the third year in a row this year. I'm not saying it's a brilliant strategy, but the thinking of some teams has obviously changed about the 3 years in a row thing. It's not an automatic. It's a choice.

Hard to say. Their owner seems like he wants to have fun. The much-esteemed Dodgers front office is going over the threshold for the third year in a row in 2023.

We're leaving out their salaries? The FanGraphs number is legit, it's based on actual historical data of the average cost of wins for free agent players.

Yes, it's higher the higher the contract. What I don't get is not being willing to pay what it takes to sign a guy like Senga or Eflin. The results are evident. Our starting pitching was a house of cards from the start and now the house has collapsed. The need to reinforce it was so great that I think Bloom is guilty of malfeasance. Now we've got Cora trying to save guys careers by not burning them out, and the Bear Claw Game.

What's the difference between getting lucky with starting pitcher signings and getting lucky with position player signings like Story and Yoshida? We could use a thread on the free agent starter signings of the last 2 years and how they've worked out.

They could have signed Senga for $75 million. That's not big-time risky at all. That's just over half what they risked on Story. It's one-quarter what they risked on Raffy. Enough of this ******** about the massive risk of free agent pitching. You don't have to sign Gerrit Cole. They're being stupidly timid.
