  1. As I said I don't think the Shaw Sandoval issue has anything to do with Farrell's state of mind or whether he is panicky. I think if he is anxious about his job it has more to do with his team's lousy record the past two years and the fact that is bench coach demonstrated that he can produce better results than Farrell can. BTW Sandoval's being "chunky" has everything to do with his not playing a good defensive 3rd baseman.
  2. Farrell obviously realizes that he is on thin ice, as well he should be. I don't think however that the Shaw Sandoval competition is any more indicative of that then the more salient fact that his bench coach showed he could do a better job then he can. That would cause "panic" in any one.
  3. I also read the quote. If it is accurate then I'd say that the Sox basically agree with the position that some us have advocated that is that Sandoval's fair chance is that he has to prove himself now not later. They aren't giving him the whole month of April or more as some others want. This certainly is an unusual move for Boston. If it is true, then there really is a new sheriff in town.
  4. I don't know which "beat writer" wrote that unless it was Rob Bradford. I saw Pablo early in ST and he looked much worse than last year. Guys who have seen every game say he looks terrible. Every time I've seen him he looked terrible.. He obviously hasn't impressed the Red Sox brass who are obviously are hedging their bets on Sandoval in a way unlike any other player.
  5. Sandoval is the one who is being disrespectful, to himself his employer, his team mates and the fans. He is the one who showed up looking like a fat slob. He had hi chance. He either gets together quickly or put him on waivers. I am tired of enablers making excuses for the over indulgent overpaid baallplayers
  6. No but you don't need more than a couple innings to see a man who is hopelessly out of shape and whose gut is lapping over his belt and who can't bend over to pick up a slow roller.
  7. If you think it is bad now wait until he gets up North, You ain't seen nothing yet. The fans will drive him out of town.
  8. You and I have had the benefit of seeing him in person. I don't know if the others have had the same view. To put it bluntly I was surprised how much he has slipped from the ballplayer I saw last year. His is bigger, slower and clearly less agile. Last year he was the worst defensive 3rd baseman in baseball. His current physical condition doesn't help him get any better. As for Farrell, didn't he say a couple of weeks before everyone reported that Sandoval had lost weight? We all know that wasn't true. So as far Farrell is concerned I don't trust anything he says especially that crap about Sandoval working hard. The proof will be what happens on the field not what comes out of Farrell's mouth.
  9. He DOES WADDLE!
  10. He is getting a fair shot and looking bad.
  11. It is all over the ball park that he came in 20 lbs over last year. As I said it was common knowledge among the crew working the games, guys who have been there for ten years working every game. Plus I was no more than ten yards from the man and he was clearly heavier than last year. He was also noticeably slower and had trouble recovering his balance to make a decent throw to first. It is you who are making the assumptions since I presume you aren't in Ft Myers nor have you seen any games in person.
  12. If you had attended any of the games and watched Sandoval embarrass himself at third you'd hardly call him the voice of reason.
  13. Sandoval was the worst defensive 3rd baseman in the game last year. So far this spring he looks worse at third than he did last year. Shaw or Holt can play a better third then Sandoval who is an embarrassment at third.
  14. Yes a fat out of shape ballplayer who is 20 lbs heavier than last year when he was out of shape and the worst defensive 3rd baseman in the game who is slow lethargic and too big to pick up a slow roller.
  15. The problem with giving Sandoval " a chance" is that by doing so you are denying a chance to ballplayers who demonstrated a positive attitude by coming into camp in shape. In my view Sandoval gave the proverbial finger to every pitcher on the team by reporting to camp in a condition that he was unable to pickup slow rollers because of his gut. If it were up to me he'd be put on waivers and spend the year in Pawtucket until he was in the physical condition I wanted him to be in.
  16. I am not making assumptions about anything but I am evaluating the evidence that I see with my own eyes. By the fact he came in 20 lbs heavier and by published reports of his behavior and his own statements. Your attitude is typical of an "enabler" who makes excuses for people.
  17. I must admit that I was one of those who thought HR would suck at 1st. However, after seeing play so far this spring I am ready to change my mind on that score. His play at first has been more than satisfactory. While he hasn't made any outstanding plays there, he hasn't ben called upon to do so. He has dug some low throws out of the dirt well. He saved Sandoval from making yet another throwing error. He handled Vasquez's pickoff play well. He does seem to be like some one learning to dance when it comes to his footwork around the bag but that will come with time. In short I think HR will do okay at 1st. He may not win the gold glove but if he hits especially well who knows he could surprise and actually do well in the All star voting
  18. Why should anyone give him a chance when he hasn't given himself one? Farrell said he was losing weight when in fact he gained 20lbs. What does that say about his respect for himself, his team mates or the fans. Okay he has an eating problem then admit it and do something about it. Step up and be responsible. He hasn't and probably won't. So the fans, the media, his team mates and ownership have every right to get on his case until he does or is shipped out of town.
  19. It is fine to root for him but when he comes into camp 20 lbs heavy than last year and is so fat he can't pickup a slow roller and has made 4 errors in 11 games (and should have had two more in the games I watched) it is hard to see any reason why anyone should. He looks awful in the field.
  20. The usher who obviously has seen every ST game played at Jet Blue this spring said Sandoval had trouble picking up slow rollers because he was so fat.
  21. Like I said yesterday I went to the Ft Myers game today and posted my comment on the st game thread. One of the ushers at the game who has been doing the games in FT Myers for more than ten years, (and played softball with my father in law back in the day) told me that word around was the Sandoval reported to ST twenty pounds heavier than last year.(His twenty pound weight gain may have been reported in the media but I hadn't heard it. before.)
  22. Did Ft Myers and Naples dining last year, some great restaurants. Our rule when we are here is that the restaurant must be on the water except when we eat at the ballpark. Love Pincher's which may not be great dining but they have great fresh grouper, snapper and crabs.
  23. Last year and next year Ft Myers. This year Cape Coral. We do a lot of traveling, golf and fishing while we are here. Ft Myers Beach traffic is too much to handle.
  24. From what I've seen unless he loses 40 lbs it won't matter how much he works with Butterfield. He is simply too slow getting to the ball. I think he has lost a step or two from last year. He came to camp out of shape and it shows. He needs to accept responsibility for that and from what I've seen and read he hasn't
  25. We have been in Florida since Feb 24 visiting family up in the Panhandle. We rent a place down here for the month of March. We'll be here next year as well. (You have to rent a house a year in advance to get anything good.) We didn't see today's game which I thought was a split squad game. But we will be there tomorrow. I agree with everything you said re Sandoval. I think he looks fatter and slower then he did last spring.
