  1. that's only because we have the traditional stats also.
  2. How are they more advanced they are just different and comparatively speaking new. You say toe may toe I say Toe mah toe.
  3. I object to the term advanced metrics. In no way are.they "advanced". They are still statistics. The are just a different way at looking what happens during a baseball game. We talk about objectivity vs subjectivity but when it comes right down to it, what is called a strike, what is called a hit, and what is called an error is based on a subjective interpretative. While the strike zone may be defined in the rule book it take an umpire to make the decision on what is actually a strike. The umpire makes a subjective determination of whether the pitched ball constitutes a strike as set forth in the rules. We know that there is wide variety between umpires in their determination of balls and strikes. So too when the umpire makes the determination of a close play at first or elsewhere. While instant replay may have some impact there is still subjectivity at play in many cases. So too when it comes to what constitutes an error. My larger point is that given the inherent subjectivity which lays at the very core of the game how does this effect mathematically the reliability and validity of the statistics. Just a point to ponder.
  4. I read his book years ago.
  5. Some one should publish a statistical study on the accuracy of Bill James statistical projections. I am sure they are done but I presume they are highly "classified"
  6. If the Red Sox don't show early improvemnt he won't make it that far.
  7. Yea but is he biased?
  8. That may be true but I think none of who have posted here regarding Ben have exhibited a double standard with respect to DD or BC As I said before and I say again Ben was promoted above his level of competency to be the Chief of Baseball operations. I will add the following based on (the late) Denny McLain's comments. Ben just isn't devious enough for the job. BTW Denny McLain is alive.
  9. That's just your bias showing.
  10. I think Ben can do better than praise from a convicted felon.
  11. All of the above may be true or may be false depending on the situation. The bias is whether one considers stud or slut as either a positive or negative attribute.
  12. Read Kimmi's post earlier in the thread.
  13. Maybe that's what Henry wants. I think it is given Henry's past behavior.
  14. I fail to see the distinction.
  15. Like I said Ben had his strong points. In fairness to Ben, if what Denny McLain is true then DD is one devious SOB, just like Larry Lucchino.
  16. Most of the criticism I've heard about the HOF voting process is that it is the prerogative of the BBWAA which means that some voters are no longer active day to day baseball writers. Another is that broadcasters don't have a vote. The question is the BBWAA the best body to select members of the HOF.
  17. Farrell is another example of a square peg in a round hole. He is better suited for some other role than field manager.
  18. If a team wants to fire a manager a little thing like a contract is hardly an impediment for them to do so.
  19. Your bias is that you think there is such a thing as purely objective analysis. The trick is to recognize one's biases. Regarding consistency, I refer you to Ralph Waldo Emerson.
  20. This just proves how manipulative and devious everyone in senior positions in baseball are.
  21. Of course so does every other human being on the planet. Here are the facts I see as instructive to my opinion.. Dombrowski was the CEO in Detroit for 14 years. Upon his departure he was highly sought by several franchises. He signed in 2 weeks. Incompetent people don't last 14 years working for Mitch Llitch. Cherrington wasn't the CEO but rather the chief of baseball operations. Despite a high payroll his team finished last two years in a row. The rest you know and would be repetitious.. Apropos of nothing someday we should have discussion about bias. There is no such thing as a human being forming any opinion on anything with out bias. That's why it is called opinion. You may say that one can form an opinion based on facts. But the bias is in which facts one chooses to accept as reliable and valid.
  22. I read that also and it appears to support the view that Dombrowski's departure wasn't mutual.
  23. I think that's what I said.
  24. Must mean Lucchino was involved.
