  1. Baseball is dull of legitimate talents who can't and don't cut the mustard. Don't let your disdain for BV interfere with the obvious truth Bard is a bit of a wuss. He doesn't have the mental toughness to close and is yet to demonstrate that he can throw strikes enough to be a succssful as a starter. Numerous peolple questioned whether Bard was a starter. It isn't BV's fault that Bard hasn't sealed the deal. It isn't BV's fault that there are other and perhaps better options for the fourth adn fifth spots. Plus you have Dice-K waiting in the wings.
  2. Bard had better get a thicker skin. It isn't about what is best for Bard or being fair to Bard. Somehow along the way perhaps before BV even got to the job someone led Bard believe he would be a starter. He was entitled to the job. That kind of attitude got this team in trouble. There are several candidates for the 4 and 5 th starters role. It is what is fair to all and what is best for the team. If Bard get a starters job under BV it will because he has earned it and is mentally tough enough to keep it. My advice to Bard is stop feeling sorry for yourself pull yourself together and pitch.
  3. You only get 2 but very good nonetheless.:thumbsup:
  4. The beautiful things about that squeeze play were: It was executed to perfection telling BV who can count on to lay down a bunt in that situation and secondly sent a message to both his players and opponents expect the unexpected. This will keep everyone including all Red Sox players they better stay on their toes, pay attention and don't miss any signs. That always wasn't the case last year.
  5. I liked what I saw tonight from Cook also. I love sinkerball pitchers. I especially liked his pickoff move. If Cook were to be a starter, I'd think the cry of Iggy in the bigs would be deafening.
  6. That could have been one of the reasons we hadn't won a playoff game since 08. Change is always controversial. Plus you sound as if controversy is a bad thing and something to be avoided at all costs. It isn't.
  7. Bobby is doing just fine re the press IMO. Bobby isn't Tito.
  8. Theo left us a mess. And Cherry really din't get us much help during the off season. I thought they'd give Bard at least until mid May but I think Bobby doesn't beleive he can wait that long. Bard was only going to pitch 140 innings as a starter this year so he was destined to end up in the pen in any case. Better now than later. Aceves at least has had experience as a starter.
  9. It just took them longer
  10. That's what happens when you shop at the Dollar Store. Stuff breaks easily
  11. Actually Bard did pretty well after the second. The important thing for me was the fact that he finished strong. Considering he is transitioning from a reliever to starter, it is important that he bounce back after a tough inning. He retired the last 8 batters he faced. On the down side, he didn't throw that many change ups and too many fastballs. I don't see him being successful as a starter relying so much on his fastball.
  12. Lee's problem was he threw it three times to the same hitter.
  13. One shouldn't expect any pitchers to be showing too much velocity at this juncture in ST. We are only half way through ST. Throwing too hard too early in ST can actually cause injuries later. Things will begin to move a bit more quickly the last two weeks of ST. Monday BV should make a few more cuts and perhaps begin to setup the rotation for openning day. Regarding Padilla I am less concerned about his pitching ability than I am his mental and emotional stability. Guys like Milton Bradley Carlos Zambrano and Padilla generally can't change their behavior. I'd be very surprised if doesn't do something wacky during the season.
  14. I think the way he is pitching now Padilla makes the team in the pen. He has good control, unlike Miller.
  15. It can work in the right spots so long as he doesn't over use it. It was an effective weapon for Bill Lee at one time, although it also came back to huant him if you recall.
  16. It is called an Eepheus curve. He uses quite a bit and can be quite effective if used in the right spots. He controlled quite well today. He only gave up a hit when he used it back to back. BTW Vin Scully called Padilla's Eepheus curve the "soap bubble"! Now you know why Vin Scully is still the best !
  17. All professional sports need marketing "gimmicks" to survive. That's why they came up up with the nicknames for the teams such as Red Sox, Dodgers Yankees etc. Without marketing MLB would be played in front a few thousand fans like it was before the !st World War.
  18. I just think the term is a marketing gimmick. FYI: The phrase "Red Sox Nation" was first coined by Boston Globe feature writer Nathan Cobb in an October 20, 1986, article about split allegiances among fans in Connecticut during the 1986 World Series between the Red Sox and the New York Mets.
  19. RF is a more dfficult position, especially at Fenway Park. CC needs stability. He doesn't need to have to learn a new position in the midst of everything else. I have heard no knowledgeable source ever recomemnd such a move now.
  20. The problem wasn't when he pitched. If anything it was the fact that there was a rain delay.
