I said Ruth earlier but I think most missed the point. The premise of the thread is build your team around one player. The Yankees in the twenties did exactly that and a dynasty was the result. Prior to that trade the Boston Red Sox were the Yankes of their era. After the trade well the Yankees became the Yankees that we know today. One shudders to think how different the game would be if that trade never happened. BTW the greatest Red Sox pitcher was neither Pedro nor Clemmens. If I were to have one Red Sox pitcher in his prime it would be Cy Young. I know the eras are different and players today are bigger and stronger but given the time in which they played it's Ruth and Young.

I'd be surprised if they DFA'd Nava for one simple reason, Crawfords's elbow. We know that CC will need TJ surgery eventually and there is a fair possibility that he could get injured at any time. Nava may never make the All Star team but he has shown to be a more than adequate left fielder

Yes I did James's comments were silly and uninformed. While under Pennsylvannia law ultimate authority does lie with the President that doesn't exonerate Paterno. Since the emails make it clear that Paterno engaged in a criminal conspiracy to protect a serial rapist. The emails from 1998 implicate Joe Pa in perjury before a grand jury when he denied that he knew of any prior incidents involving Sandusky. If this had occurred in this state and virtually any other state in the Union (PA has the weakest child welfare laws in the country) Joe Pa would have already been indicted.

If you read the Freeh report, it is clear that Paterno lied to investigators and to the grand jury when he said he had never heard of the earlier investigation of Sandusky in 1998. There were emails between Paterno and the President about that investigation. In addition 2001 there are emails that Spanier et al thought about going to authorities but were dissuaded from doing so by Paterno. It isn't the press who is screwing over Paterno but rather the evidence uncovered in an extensive investigation by the former Director of the FBI Louis Freeh. I also think there will be other evidence that will be uncovered by the second grand jury and federal investigators as well as further evidence which will come out during subsequent trials and investigations which will implicate Paterno further. Paterno was more influencial at PSU then the President of the university.

No they aren't. Many sexual predators have been abused as children or exposed to extreme violence as children.

You are correct again. All the research indicates that it is virtually impossible to rehabilitate sex offenders beyond the age of 16. Now when we speak of sex offenders one must be careful some relatively minor offenses are erroneously classified as sex offenders. Serious sex offenders include serial rapists such as Sandusky. BTW there are unconfirmed reports coming out of PA that there are dozens more potential Sandusky victims contacting PA state police. If true this case is just beginning rather than ending.

The Red Sox have now issued a statement disavowing James's comment and asking him not to make any further public statements on the Sandusky matter because of his association with the Boston Red Sox. The Sox have done the right thing.

No. If I were I would write an entire column on why Bill James is totally irresponsible for making the comments he did while in the employ of the Boston Red Sox. If I were in John Henry's shoes I would be livid at James.

Bill James made one of the most ill considered statements regarding Paterno and the Sandusky case. The Red Sox must publically disassociate themselves from Bill James's statements on this case.

When I saw the game I described it as closing it a tad. The question is how will this affect his timing and balance.

No competent high performance organization whether it be a baseball team or what ever sets up its top operational manager to fail the way the Red Sox have done with BV. Forget this is a baseball team. What private entity would hire an on site manager and then not let him have authority to hire and/or fire his senior deputies, in this case the bench coach, pitching coach, hitting coach and bull pen coach. I can tell you from experience that never works when it is done as it was in this case. In my view BV made one huge mistake in accepting the job under the conditions that he couldn't hire his own coaches.
