Actually Lester did not give up anything wacky...or historic or colossal. I have no issue with Lester at all. However past Lester there has been a number of real moon shots hit and you just cannot hit the ball that good unless you are right on the pitch.
Will everybody hit the ball that hard...of course not. However if hitters can be right on the pitches members of this staff are serving up, then it will be hard to hold down scoring. Some of us have said for a very long time now that this was shaping up as a team that would have to win games 10-8, 12-10. A team that will consider an 8-6 game low scoring. I don't see anything past Lester that suggests otherwise and he can only pitch once every 5 days.
It is a team with weak defense. This was another game where they allowed the opponent four outs in two separate innings. Jacko you then go an add one last cherry to the top and contend that it is also not as strong offensively as it has been.
So past Lester I really don't see a team that will hold down the competition very often. Yet as you say, it might not be as strong offensively as it has been. That sounds like a tough combination.
On the bright side, I think based on what we have seen, the Rays are anything but a shoe in to win the East or even finish ahead of the Sox in the East. They are a weak hitting team and they have no pen, not just a weak pen but no pen. They are already shuffling guys up from Durham in an effort to find somebody that can come into a game without blowing up. Get past their starting pitching and they will have a very hard time winning games.
So all I am saying is that this still looks to me like a team that will have to put up close to double digits to win games. Does it look like a team that will put up double digits? We will see.
