I still think Cora wanted to hold onto Wright for a major innings need he sees coming in NY or maybe even a start there. It worked out...but just barely. Should not have taken Sale out when he did as there is simply no way this team moves on with its starters going 6 or less...just no way. Cora at least has to give the Starter a chance to get out of his own jam because we have absolutely nobody that can come in with ducks on the pond.
Having virtually lucked out with Work in the 6th, I have no clue why Cora went back to Work for a start of a clean inning. Relief pitchers are not starters and thinking they will "work it out" over a half inning sit is just asinine. Just pick somebody and send him out there once the relief pitcher shows you he just can't get it done on that given night.
Also, now you see why Managers have to go back to the same arms over and over again in the post season. Who of that bunch of trash do you think Cora has any confidence in at all out of the guys that came in relief last night? Barnes is about all that comes out of that mess and barely at that. Porcello has to start a game.
The natural spot for Wright was to start the 7th and if doing fine, pitch the 8th and just take it to Kimbrel to start a clean 9th instead of the mess we got. But since Wright never got up, I have to believe Cora really sees a major innings shortfall in NY and wants him for that. If Price gets pounced on and bounced early tonight I would bet Cora will go to either Evo or Eddie and still resist the temptation to use Wright in Fenway against the MFY's. That said if we are ahead multiple runs in game two up 1-0 in games I would be tempted to use Wright in game 2 here. Sealing wins in both games and going up 2-0 would be huge for this team going to NY for game three and it would be worth the risk if we have a real lead to protect.
I am so done with the give up a run to get an out bullpen. Obviously Cora was as well. He just apparently was adamant about keeping Wright for Yankee Stadium.
