RHP Cody Poteet (2-0, 1.06) vs LHP Martin Perez (2-2, 3.55)
Tonight's starter Poteet is making his 4th career start in the majors. His changeup has been filthy so far, with a 38% whiff rate. He shutout the Mets on Sunday over 7 innings, and threw 5 scoreless against the Phillies before that. In his first start, he allowed 2 runs over 5 innings against Arizona. None of those teams' lineups are as good as ours. It might take a trip through the order, but I think we can get to him. He only has 13 Ks in 17 IP, much in line with the rest of the Marlins pitching staff (see below).
Miami Marlins Overview:
Record: 24-26 (4th place, NL East, 3 GB)
Last year: 31-29 (2nd place, NL East, 6th seed NL playoffs, beat Cubs in WC round, lost to Braves in NLDS)
Manager: Don Mattingly (6th season)
Runs Scored: 198 (20th, 1 place ahead of the Yankees)
Strikeouts: 491 (6th highest in the league - Red Sox are 15th highest)
Team BA: .231 (Tied 20th)
Team OBP: .298 (26th)
Team ERA: 3.34 (7th - Red Sox are 14th)
HR allowed: 40 (4th fewest - Red Sox are 3rd)
Strikeouts: 431 (18th)
Opponent BA: .223 (11th)
Marlins are also in the top 5 in the league in stolen bases. They strikeout a lot, struggle to score runs and get on base, but when they do, they will run, which is not exactly something we are good at preventing (I'm looking at you, Ottavino).
As for pitching, they won't overpower you. Strikeout numbers are down, but they keep the ball in the ballpark. They have a bunch of pitchers that are good at getting groundballs and weak contact.
Top 5 players in WAR:
P Trevor Rogers (1.9) - Saturday's starting pitcher: 6-2, 1.75 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 70 K, 22 BB, 56.2 IP in 10 starts
P Pablo Lopez (1.8)
SS Miguel Rojas (1.7) - Dislocated a finger in yesterday's game. Probably headed to the IL, most likely won't play this weekend
RF Adam Duvall (1.4)
P Sandy Alcantara (1.2) - Sunday's starting pitcher: 2-4, 3.46 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 64 K, 20 BB, 65.0 IP in 11 starts
Contrary to what you might think, the Marlins actually have the oldest 40-man roster in the league. Offensively, they are led by Jazz Chisholm, Jr., one of the more electric and fun players in the league to watch. He is currently banged up, but should return to the starting lineup this weekend. Jesus Aguilar is capable of going deep at any moment, or at least playing pepper with the Green Monster, but he has been mired in a slump that has persisted for the better part of a month, yet his average is still .261. Adam Duvall is the other primary power threat, but is more of a hit or miss guy, slashing .213/.425/.682. Like I said, we will miss Miguel Rojas this series, which is huge, because he is very much the leader of this team, at .275/.433/.787. Starling Marte should return from the IL this weekend.
I'd be happy with 2 out of 3, but a sweep isn't out of the question if Nate and Eddie step things up in their starts this weekend.
