  1. We're 4 weeks from the 1st game of the ALDS (assuming we hang on to the division). That should be ample time for Ellsbury to heal up. You can bet, with free agency looming, Ellsbury will play through just about anything in the post season. He'd be able to play through it now if it was the PS. He hurt his foot on 9/2. Took 9/3 off. Then on 9/4 and 9/5, he went 4/11 (.364) with a double and a SB. Seems like it's pretty precautionary. 7.5 game lead. Just make sure he's all set for the post season, and get a good look at JBJ while he's out. May even help the Sox evaluate how much they want to spend on Ellsbury.
  2. Pete Abe's Extra Bases blog on Boston.com
  3. I have a feeling that Lackey is going to get a lot of his run support that he missed over the past few weeks all made up for today. To the tune of a 14-3 win.
  4. I know you didn't mean anything by it, but saying "they have some solid prospects int he minors" is one of the biggest understatements I've heard in a while. JBJ, Bogaerts, Cecchini, Betts, Owens, Ball, Ranaudo, Barnes, Swihart. That's 9 guys who probably will break top 100 prospect listings next year. Plus you've got Webster, RDLR, who will probably grow into a really good late inning reliever, Workman, Britton a very nice lefty reliever, and a complete darkhorse in Manuel Margot, who some scouts say is the next Xander Bogaerts.
  5. Ellsbury is in Boston right now getting his right foot examined from the foul ball. Bradley in today, as well as Bogaerts and Lavarnway. Really hope Ellsbury is ok. I'm sure he'll be fine. He did play in game 1 against the Yankees, and after playing 9 innings, singled, stole 2nd, and scored on a ball to RF from 2nd. If it was anything more than a "take 3-4, maybe 5 days off" thing, I can't imagine that he'd be in.
  6. Yeah, but his overall BABIP this year is still just .274, so on the season he's still had a few less balls fall than he should have. Plus, he had a 23% LD% in August, which is the main reason his BABIP skyrocketed. He's not going to continue to hit .350 the rest of the season (or maybe he will, it's only 20 games), but regardless, I would guess that his line next year will be more around .265/.320/.475.
  7. Pettitte going tonight for the Yanks. Bogaerts hasn't played since the final game of the White Sox series, so 4 games off other than some late inning blowout replacements. I'd imagine he'll be in there at SS tonight.
  8. I'm sure it's selective memory/confirmation bias, but I really think there have been many more examples of leaving guys in and it biting than of leaving them in and it helping.
  9. That game was....outrageous. I think Victorino went, but I also think Wells was out at 3B. So, that made the calls even. Both teams still had a chance to get out of the situation after the blown call, and both teams cracked under the pressure. Either way, the Sox won. Two things. First, Farrell has got to stop it with the "running the starter back out there when he's over 100 pitches and it's past the 6th inning". I can't even begin to count how many times that's torched him this year, yet he continues to do it. If he does it during a PS game, I'm going to lose my s***. Second, Thornton is NOT a post season roster candidate. Not even close. I know he's got a 1.59 ERA with the Sox, but he gives up entirely too many hits, and I 100% do not trust him in any big game situation. Give me Britton, Breslow, and/or Doubront from the left side out of the pen.
  10. Hell yeah. Can't wait to take Chevy Nova out back and drum that kid til the wheels fall off. This series and the 3 game series next weekend is going to be payback for the 2006 5 game series. 7 game sweep. Count on it.
  11. A mediocre Buchholz is more reliable than Doubront at any point. Doubront could go 7 IP, 1 ER or could go 3.1 IP, 4 ER and 108 pitches. Give me Buch over Doubront. Until Doubront can show consistency in his pitch efficiency, I'm going with the known commodity.
  12. Especially with the Yankees series. This seems really dumb
  13. Nah man. It's a 3-way for sure. If the lead holds, we will be a combined 9-2 since we started the Optimists Unite for Game Threads.
  14. Some guy got absolutely JACKED in the head by that ball!!!
  15. Not sure where you're coming from here jung. The AL WC Play In Game is on Tuesday, 10/2. Game 1 of the ALDS is Friday, 10/5. That would give the ace 2 days of rest, and nobody would start their ace on 2 days of rest. In fact, the schedule for the ALDS goes 10/4, 10/5, 10/7, 10/8, and 10/10. If a team pitches their ace in the play-in game, they would not be able to pitch him twice in the ALDS without going on short rest at least once (10/2-10/5 is 3 days rest, and 10/7-10/10 is 3 days rest). The only complaint I can see is that your ace can pitch in game 162 and then open the ALDS if you make it, which is really not a huge deal IMO. The ALCS is no different than any other year. 2-3-2 with a travel day on either side of the 3 gamer. 10/12, 10/13, 10/15, 10/16, 10/17, 10/19, 10/20. So I'm not quite sure where you're going with this stuff? Here's the link to the schedule. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/schedule/ps.jsp?tcid=mm_mlb_schedule
  16. I met Dave at the FG meet and greet a couple weeks ago. Really, really nice guy. I got there early and got to shoot the s*** with him for about 20 minutes before everyone else showed up. Really cool experience.
  17. Looks like it's going to be Hellickson v Buchholz, Price v Peavy, and Cobb v Doubront. I actually really like the Sox chances to take 2/3 there.
  18. At this point, the Rays have their backs pretty well against the wall. The Red Sox have 22 games left, the Rays 25. And the Rays have to lose 4 fewer than the Red Sox to force a 1 game playoff for the division. In essence, if the Red Sox go 11-11 in their final 22, the Rays would have to go 18-7 (.720 baseball) to tie the Red Sox. Even if the Sox go 10-12 in their final 22, the Rays would still have to go 17-8 (.680) to tie it up. Not at all saying it's over, and not at all saying the Rays can't make up that ground, just saying they've dug themselves a pretty tough hole to get out of.
  19. Wow. Good thing we kept Nava in. Not like Berry could have 1. Stolen 2B before Pedroias single or 2. Tagged up and advanced to 3B on Ortiz's fly out and scored in either scenario on Napolis single. What the hell are we doing here Farrell??
  20. This team cannot make a productive out. Geez.
  21. HBP for Gomes in 3.....
  22. Ugh. Nava is such a horrible baserunner. Why the hell isn't Ells or Berry running?!?
  23. Have to PR Berry here no?? You gotta see what you have in him, this is a perfect opportunity
  24. Lets get some insurance pls
  25. Dog walking mojo appears strong
