  1. I'm shocked that the Orioles shifted on Drew. He's certainly fast enough to beat the shift with a bunt.
  2. Damn. I thought there was no chance we wouldn't score that inning.
  3. Even if they do go on a 4 game slide at some point between now and the end of the season, it's still absolutely ridiculous that through the first 133 games, they haven't had a losing streak of more than 3 games.
  4. Yeah but if the Yankees swept the Rays, you would be s***ing your pants about them making a late season surge and winning the AL East.
  5. The Rays now have 32 games left, of which 19 are away. They blew a win last night in one of their very few home games left this season, which is going to put more pressure on them to win on the road. With 32 games in 33 days, and a busted up bullpen from the KC game on Monday, they're getting lucky to have the rosters expand. Otherwise their bullpen arms could be shot. Then again, who knows how well some of their rookies are going to come up and throw. You can't put too much reliance on them, particularly not in a pressure environment.
  6. Sox are 13-11 in August, with 4 games left (2 v BAL, 2 v ChiSox). If they can go 3-1 in the final 4, a 16-12 record in August is damn good, particularly after the horrible start.
  7. Fangraphs has added a Playoff Odds section to their site - http://www.fangraphs.com/coolstandings.aspx I'm not sure if it's exactly a replica of Coolstandings, or if they add some of their own stuff in there. Either way, they have the Red Sox with a 81.8% probability of winning the division, a 98.2% probability of making the post season, a 32.4% chance of making the ALCS, and an 18.1% chance of making the world series. Oddly enough, the 18.1% chance of making the world series is the highest probability of any team in baseball. The Tigers (17.7% probability) are second.
  8. I understand what Pete Abe is saying, but playing Bogaerts against a tough lefty is not "changing shortstops", its "giving your team the best chance to win". Oh here's another golden nugget from Farrell (from Brian MacPherson) Farrell on SS decision: "I'm not going to turn away from Stephen Drew" just based on an opposing pitcher's splits. wut. Saboteur!!!!
  9. Not playing Bogaerts against a lefty with pretty extreme splits is incomprehensible.
  10. Drew in against Chen tonight instead of Bogaerts. I just can't fathom why. Righties hit Chen much better than lefties (about 140 OPS points better than lefties). Chen allows lefties to hit .188 vs him. Drew hits about .190 vs LHP. What the hell is going on?? I just give up.
  11. ESPN has a nice additional option to their MLB Standings called "Hunt for October", which outlines what each team has left in terms of home games vs away games, opponents combined W%, etc. http://espn.go.com/mlb/huntforoctober As of today, the Sox have 30 games left, 18 home, 12 away, with a combined opponent W% of .517. ESPN projects them to win 95 games (18-12 in final 30 games, a .600 W%). Also as of today, the Rays have 33 games left, 14 home, 19 away, with a combined opponent W% of .504. ESPN projects them to win 92 games (18-15 in their final 33, a .545 W%).
  12. Man, how good would it be if the A's won the West, Tigers Central, Sox East, and then you got to see Price vs Darvish for a 1 game play in? And then you got to see the Tigers and Rays battle it out while the Sox took on the A's. That would be a beautifully set up AL Postseason.
  13. September is going to be a big month for the Sox and the AL East. Discuss any and all activity that affects the race here. Sox are 1.0 games up right now (about to move to 1.5 if the Rays lose today).
  14. Royals are stomping the Rays right now, 10-1 in the 7th. If the lead holds, the Red Sox will move 1.5 games up on the Rays (tied in the L column, up 3 in the W column). This schedule for the Rays is going to catch up to them. 34 games in 35 days with a 10 day west coast trip and only 14 of their 34 games at home (including a 3 game set against the Sox at the Trop), the Sox need to take advantage of that badly. The pennant race needs a thread. I'm on it.
  15. This kid, man. This kid is going to be special. Really, really special.
  16. As for Peavy with the Sox, he's 2-1, 3.31 ERA, 7.4 K/9, 1.1 BB/9, 0.98 WHIP.
  17. Eat it, Crawford. You got lucky to win ONE game.
  18. The Red Sox SP posted a 1.12 ERA on this road trip.
  19. Sorry to interrupt with baseball talk.
  20. Yeah he looks like he's getting locked in. Wish we could see more at bats from him but I doubt we'll get to since Drew has been swinging it well. Maybe a few more starts at 3B, since Middlebrooks has struggled a bit.
