  1. How so? He threw to a 2.61 in 114 IP last season. He's got a career 2.93 ERA. His innings load is not going to jump like it would for most relievers turning to starters. He's got 3 plus pitches, and is not at all afraid to throw inside. I think his stuff translates well into a starter role.
  2. This is what it all boils down to. 1. Can Aceves post better than the 6.41 ERA that Lackey posted? I don't think that's even a question. He came out and pitched multiple innings multiple times, and in those outings went through the lineup more than once. Sure his ERA as a SP was 5.14 but that was in large part due to 1 bad outing vs the ChiSox. He only started 4 games this year, so that's an extremely small sample size to base any kind of decision regarding him as a SP. I fully expect him to come out next year and post around a 3.6-3.7 ERA as a SP. 2. Can we find a better SP than Tim Wakefield to be our 5th man? I don't think that's a question either. Oswalt, Garza, Gio, EJax are all still available, and any of them would be a massive, massive upgrade. 3. Plain and simple, you put together a rotation of Lester - Beckett - Buchholz - Oswalt/Garza/Gio/EJax - Aceves, and you've got a top rotation in the AL East, and you've got a top team in the MLB with the offense we have.
  3. He was 21 playing against advanced 24 year olds!! Dude. Give him a couple years to adjust! Jesus Montero is widely thought to be an elite power bat, and he OPS'd .814 in AAA this year. He is 21 as well, but he is in his 4th year in the minor leagues. You have to give Iglesias a couple years to learn pitch recognition man. You don't just automatically come out of Cuba with pitch recognition skills on advanced pitchers.
  4. Signing Oswalt to 1/$12mm would be a perfect move for this team right now. After the 2012 season, you can dump his salary and DiceK's salary, buy out Youk's option if WMB is ready, replace Scutaro with Iglesias, and knock out Jenk's salary. Assuming we sign Oswalt to 1/$12mm, that would drop our payroll by $45,500,000. There's a pretty big market of SP coming into FA next year. Danks, Anibal Sanchez, Wainwright, and Matt Cain will all be available.
  5. Except for the fact that when Ortiz's deal gets bumped to a 2/24mm deal, we save around $3mm in LT. Plus Lucchino already said (just like last offseason, might I add), that the Sox will go over the LT threshold if need be. So we have as much money as we need to spend. So probably 1 year/10-12mm.
  6. I really, really think a lot of you guys are overvaluing Iglesias's numbers last season. He was 21 and in AAA ball. Give him 3 more years of experience like everyone else in AAA ball, and I guaratee you that he's OPS'ing around .750, which is really all we can ask from him. He's not going to be a production bat, but his glove up the middle is going to save a whole lot of runs. I can see Jacobs being ranked higher than him, and I can see that for Bogaerts as well (personally, I think WMB and Bogaerts should be the top 2 in our system), but I think a lot of people are dogging Iglesias because of a bad season. You have to look at guys like Jacobs and remember that he is 20 and is playing in A ball. During his brief, brief stint in A Ball (13 games, 48 PA, 40 AB) at the age of 20, Iglesias OPS'd .958. He's just had a bit of a problem with pitch recognition, and that's something that he'll gain with experience.
  7. I'd like to add Roy Oswalt to my Christmas list. And I think that one really will come true.
  8. http://baseballprospectnation.com/2011/12/20/2012-boston-red-sox-top-15-prospects/ Baseball Prospect Nation's top Red Sox prospects. Made me laugh when they said Iggy's defense was "baseball pornography".
  9. I think Garza is that good, and I also think having a 1-4 of Lester Garza Buchholz Beckett, and Aceves as the 5th man, could be extremely beneficial. That rotation along with the Sox lineup would bring a WS championship.
  10. I would have loved to have heard Jackso's reaction if someone said "We could get Adrian Gonzalez for Rizzo + Kelly + Fuentes + Patterson." It would have been ridiculous.
  11. Case in Point.
  12. Breslow: 3.79 ERA in 2011 while playing in Oakland, probably one of the most pitcher friendly parks in the bigs, and he's moving to a launching pad. I'd hardly count on a guy with a career 4.50 ERA (Hernandez) to be a huge part of the back end of the rotation. Plain and simple - they had a below-average bullpen last season, and added an oft-injured Saito and a guy who posted a 3.80 ERA while playing in a terrible hitters park. I'm not seeing how this somehow translates to one of the better bullpens in the NL.
  13. So, so true. If we even mention a trade that benefits the Sox, according to Meh and Jacko, we won't match up well or don't have the chips to do it because all of our prospects are duds.
  14. Bullpen ERA of 3.71 last year, and in the NL West, that's nothing special by any means. Ranked in the bottom half of the NL (10th) in bullpen ERA last season. Not sure how that somehow translates to "one of the better bullpens in the NL". I hardly think that adding Saito will turn them into a top 3 bullpen in the NL, either. Saito is 41 and only threw 26.2 innings last season. He's not going to make them worse, but he's not going to make them better either.
  15. Ah - Sorry - misunderstood your comment.
  16. Here is my realistic offseason wishlist - 1. Go all in for Matt Garza. Trade Lavarnway + Middlebrooks + Ranaudo + 1 mid-level prospect (Theo's Compensation). He's AL East tested and proven, and has a career 3.83 ERA at Fenway. That's very good, considering the offense that this team consistently puts together. 2. Put Daniel Bard back into the bullpen, making him the closer for 2012. Melancon as the set up guy. 3. Make Ryan Kalish our starting RF, occasionally platooning with Mike Aviles. 4. Sign Ortiz to 2/$22mm. That will help the cap room by $4mm, as he's projected to make around $15mm if I'm not mistaken. 5. Stop letting all of these other teams pick up the scrap heap in SP and build some damn depth!!!
  17. I think you'll need the time machine for that, too. :dunno:
