  1. Should be 1st and 3rd, 2 outs if the umpire gets his head out of his ass.
  2. Uh. He went. And it wasn't even close. Terrible call.
  3. Approach against Beckett: First pitch fastball, swing. Beckett needs to throw a lot of offspeed stuff to start the hitters.
  4. Give it right back, will you Beckett?
  5. I think it's getting to the point of the season where we can start to realize that our offense, especially with Pedroia, Ellsbury, and Crawford coming back, is going to be fine. It is our pitching that need help, we can all agree on that. If we're trying to think outside the box a little, what helps our pitching the most? Defense up the middle. It's plays like last night where Aviles botches a simple play, allows a run, and it changes the entire course of the game. If Aviles makes that play, the 2 run 7th makes it a tie game, and the Rays get Padilla in the 8th rather than Miller. BJ Upton doesn't get to face a LHP, and it's likely a tie game going into the 9th. So, my solution? Well, we've got Ellsbury back. We're getting Pedroia back shortly. But Aviles has been very bad at SS since early May. We have the offensive firepower. Solution: Put Iglesias at SS, help the SP tremendously by having elite defense up the middle, bury Iggy in the 9 hole, and let Aviles be the utility player.
  6. Lester's FIP is lower this year than it was last year, and lower than it was in 2008 as well, when he was a 16 game winner and had a 3.21 ERA. His K:BB ratio is much higher this year than in any year past. His WHIP is higher right now, but that's because of a .326 BABIP. His BABIP usually sits in the high .280's or low .290's. That is a number that will normalize, which is one thing you can look at and base your expectation of improvement. Also, due to his high BABIP, his strand rate is extremely low (66.9%, whereas he is normally around 75%). That is another thing that will normalize. If we didn't have so many bets already, I would bet you that he posts a sub 3.50 ERA in the 2nd half.
  7. No joke!!! Going to be really, really nice. Win this game, and get Crawford back on Monday. Things will start to look up!
  8. Barnes bounced back nicely last night. 5 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 4 K, 2 BB. He's got a 3.34 ERA, 9.6 K/9, 2.3 BB/9 in High A Salem over 12 starts. He is at 86 innings. I hope they get him up to Portland by the end of this year so he can be in Pawtucket by the middle of next year, and potentially a September call up in 2013, rotation by 2014.
  9. Should have stole that one. Aviles's error hurt, and it's beyond pathetic and inexcusable to walk in a run. But, I thought we would take 2/3, and thought we would drop this one. Price is a damn gold pitcher. Win tomorrow, take the series.
  10. Switch - Right - Left - Right. Go with a right handed pitcher, V!!!! What in the hell are you doing?!?!? Pay attention, this is why we lose games like this. Try to concentrate for one damn second. That's pathetic.
  11. That's why you don't leave Miller in to face Upton. That was an exponentially stupid move.
  12. I'm fine with no Hamels, no Grienke, but at the same time, this team needs 1 more pitcher right now. You have Lester Buchholz and Beckett, and then it goes to two guys who are on innings limits in Morales and Doubront. You need a guy like Garza to slot in and be a reliable #4 man. A deal involving Cecchini should get talks started. Throw in a guy like Drake Britton, who struggled last year but has shown a nice turn around this year, or Brandon Workman, who is dominating in Salem (2.94 era) and you are probably right around a deal. That's the kind of deal that doesn't crush the future and helps get you to the post season.
  13. Ok if you guys are cutting lillibridge then, who do you cut when Crawford returns?
  14. Alex Wilson is showing his stuff down in AAA right now. He could be Bard 2.0. 2.54 ERA in 39 relief innings, and a 1.96 era in his last 10 appearances. He's also got a 9.0 K/9 as a RP. If Bard can get his s*** together, Melancon Miller Padilla Aceves Wilson Bard Bailey could be a filthy, filthy bullpen.
  15. Buchholz v Price Ellsbury again in the lineup. Buchholz will absolutely dice up this awful Rays lineup. Contrary to popular belief, the Red Sox still have 75 games left. Buchholz, and likely Gonzo, are back for this game. Crawford back Monday. Pedey back Thursday. This team is starting to get healthy. And they are only 1.5 games back in the WC. I, for one, am not close to giving up on this team. Not with nearly half the season left and a 2nd half team that won't even resemble that abomination of a lineup we featured vs the Yankees. Call me overly optimistic, but this team can certainly leapfrog the standings. It continues with this game. Win.
  16. Pitchers are good enough that they can throw their change ups for strikes in any count at any slot in the lineup. Middlebrooks needs to work on them anyway. He needs to be able to sit on it if he's going to be successful.
  17. Middlebrooks is owned by Hellicksons change up. He cannot stay on it.
  18. Morales looks really good again. Really good. I think he may have been a bit nervous on his NYY start because his stuff was just pure s*** that start. He has much, much better stuff now.
  19. So MLB.com has a lot of these pitches a ridiculous amount off the plate. Like, not even close. Is the ump giving Hellickson a lot of arm side plate?
  20. They're not even having replays tonight at the Trop, I would assume the cameras are jacked up.
  21. Your first baseman when you blow it up this year.
  22. Gotta have Crawford in the 2 hole so he doesn't feel like he's a run producer. He's a run scorer, not an RBi guy. Hitting him 5th puts him up with a lot of guys on 1B. He is a 2 hole hitter
