  1. Angels trade Walden for Tommy Hanson.
  2. Tender deadline tonight at 11:59 pm. Would not be surprised at all to see the Sox acquire Jurrjens.
  3. They also had a .594 team OPS in September, after the massive trade.
  4. Ok. Then go read Jen Royle's tweets. She's a friend of Napoli who is also in the media, and is talking about how he is unlikely to go to Texas, that the Red Sox are willing to give him 5 years (tweet has since been deleted), that 4 years will get him, and that the meeting he had with the Red Sox went great, according to Napoli. If the Sox aren't targeting Napoli #1 right now, why haven't they given any other free agents a dinner date with John Henry? I don't know why you refuse to believe it, but Napoli is their #1 target. Where there's smoke, there's fire.
  5. Based on multiple industry sources, including Jon Heyman who is very, very much plugged in. Not to mention a meeting that Napoli had with the entire Red Sox brass, including John Henry.
  6. Well Lucchino essentially confirmed that they met with Napoli and that Henry was there, which is a significant event. Henry doesn't get involved on players that they're not interested in signing.
  7. Not going to happen. The Yankees are trying to get under the $189 threshold. Going out and giving Napoli 4/48 is not going to help that. Especially when he isn't able to catch 120+ games. And when Romine finally does take over full time catching, and you put Napoli at DH, what are you going to do with ARod? Or Jeter, when he wants to keep playing, but can't play a full season at SS?? The fact is that the Yankees have entirely too much money tied up to ARod to get a full time DH, or even a DH/C, where the majority of the games are at DH. Napoli to the Yankees makes zero sense.
  8. Boston has made it 110% clear that Napoli is their #1 target, and everyone else is #1B. Which is how it should be. Napoli is a very good player. The Sox will come down with him. And now that Martin is gone, the Sox have a much more valuable trade chip in Salty, who will be a 20-25 HR catcher at a very reasonable cost.
  9. Yes. The Yankees couldn't give Martin, a player who would catch 130 games , more than 2/17, and told him they didn't have the cash to match that deal. But they will turn around and give Napoli 4/48-50 which is what it will take to get him from the Slx, who have publicly stated that he is their number 1 target. And Napoli will catch around 70 games. Then steal DH time from Jeter and ARod. No chance.
  10. Russell Martin just signed with the Pirates. If the Sox can sign Napoli, that's going to build tremendous value for Salty. The Rangers and Yankees both really need a catcher. Although the Yanks would likely not trade directly w the Sox, a 3-way deal should not be ruled out by any means. And a 4th year for Napoli without giving up a draft pick is much more valuable to this team than LaRoche for 3 years and no 2nd round pick, if that's the alternative.
  11. Morse is coming off a .791 OPS, and had a .321 OBP this year after missing around 60 games to an injury. He's in the final year of his contract, too, so if they do choose to go with Morse, they are going to have to make sure that he's healthy enough to play a full season, and that they will be able to resign him. LaRoche had a .853 OPS last year (.343 OBP) and plays gold glove defense (even though the actual award is a load of horse s***, he still plays excellent defense). I'm not saying they will certainly let LaRoche walk, but its not a certainty that they take Morse over LaRoche by any means.
  12. I think the Sox get Wilson. He's a New England native, and that does play a role. Since he won't be ready for a few months into the season, Sox could let Bailey build value and then trade him when Wilson is ready. Buster was saying that the Sox will be a major player in the Wilson sweepstakes since the Giants plan to non tender him.
  13. According to Heyman, the Sox are targeting Napoli, Swisher, and Cody Ross, and look to be able to get all 3. That'd be a crazy good clubhouse, and a very solid lineup, especially at home and especially against LHP. I like these moves. It also seems that the Sox are almost certainly going to pursue pitching via the trade market, as they haven't targeted any free agent SP yet, at least not publicly.
  14. I don't see how you can say that Ellsbury and Middlebrooks are unimpressive? That's a very strong core, the 4 of them. Ells had 2 freak injuries. Middlebrooks had a freak injury. The only player in that whole group that had recurring injuries over 2 seasons is Ortiz, with his heel, but he is somehow the reliable one? Can't agree with this at all.
  15. Completely irrelevant. Just because Farrell isn't the pitching coach does not negate the history he has with Lester, or the fact that he is still a manager with a strong pitching background. Not like he's going to just ignore the pitchers, and for a guy as monumental to the Red Sox success as Lester, he's going to do everything in his power to get him back on track, even if that means intruding on pitching coach duties. The fact that he's not the pitching coach is completely meaningless. He's still going to get him back on track, or the Sox will be a bad team again.
  16. Jen Royle tweeted out the 5 year thing, but she has since deleted the tweet. Not sure what's going on w that
  17. I have Lackey as my #5. I'm expecting a 2010 season from him. 200+ innings, 4.2-4.4 era. Really, all you can ask for from your #5. I think Doubront gets dealt before next year myself. Perhaps with Salty for Niese, or Garza + 1, or for a SP that is being shopped very quietly.
  18. True - we need 1 more SP, but offensively we would be set. Ellsbury - Pedroia - Hamilton - Ortiz - Napoli - Middlebrooks - Lavarnway/Ross - Gomes/Kalish - Iglesias Go out and sign Sanchez and trade for Garza and you've got a contender. Bullpen should be in solid shape as is with De La Rosa, Taz, Bailey, Aceves, Bard, Miller, and Breslow. But you're right, they'd need 1 more guy who can give them a sub 4 ERA.
  19. Also said Napoli wants 4 years and the Sox are willing to go 5. Sounds like a lock. Excellent news. Now go get Hamilton and Garza and you've got a contender.
  20. I would say that the Crawford deal was the biggest unnecessary splash. The thing the Sox did so poorly was to mortgage the future. The VMart and Gonzo deals both stripped the Sox of some premium prospects. And it forced them to fill holes externally rather than internally, and ultimately created financial inflexibility. Signing Hamilton and Napoli may bump the payroll up, but at the same time, you've got guys like Middlebrooks, Lavarnway, Tazawa, Bogaerts, Bradley, Brentz, Webster, De La Rosa, and Barnes who are going to be coming up over the next few years and providing the team with impact players at league min salaries. That allows the team to go out and give Hamilton the 5/120, and give Napoli the 4/48, and still maintain flexibility. This offseason, I don't really see any moves that would be made just to make a splash. I think, as depleted as this roster is right now, any move is going to be to build a winning team in the short term without putting any risk on the long term.
  21. Yup, I agree with all of these moves except for the fact that I am ok going into next season w Iglesias at SS, but we have certainly had our debates on that and just have a difference of opinion there. That team would be an absolute contender, and not just for the 2nd WC spot, but for a WS, and wouldn't mortgage any of our future. I may take Russell out of the Cubs deal and make a deal for Soriano or Soria, and that would also keep Kalish and Iggy and the add on out of the deal, potentially even take back Doubront and tack on Alex Wilson, considering Garzas injury concerns. If Farrell can get Bard and Aceves back on track, and tack on Bailey, Tazawa, Soria, Miller, and Breslow, that would be a disgusting bullpen.
  22. Where did you hear this?? I just read her tweet that she spoke to Napoli and that what's being reported on twitter is not true at all. Not sure if she's talking about the 4th year or that he's going to speak to the Mariners. She seems like a reliable source so I'm very curious where you saw her report this.
  23. Yes but you also have to look at who was leading the team. A guy who complained publicly about the umpires. Farrell is a no nonsense, create your own fortunes manager.
  24. I agree, but I'm confident they'll get it done. Plus, you gotta think Napoli is going to want to go to a contender, which the Sox are going to build to be certain.
  25. 110% agree. But I'm almost certain that the Sox will pull the trigger on the deal. I think he will end up getting 3/36 with a mutual option or a player option for 10mm
