True, but regardless, the Sox still have Melancon, Aceves, Bailey, who are all better than Marmol.
And like I said, it's much easier to find a RP (Soria, Soriano, Madson, Broxton) than a SP with that ceiling.
Such an awful job by Cherrington. Absolutely awful.
Cafardo is saying the Angels coveted Bard, but not sure if that's who they asked for.
If they did, why the hell did we say no??
Such a bad job by Cherrington. To get Dan Haren for $15mm for Alfredo Aceves?? Come the hell on man.
I'm incredibly pissed off at Cherrington right now. That's pathetic.
Back on topic, the Cubs are about to acquire Dan Haren for Carlos Marmol.
Are you freaking kidding me??
The whole point of making Bard a starter was because it's so much harder to find good SP than good RP. Trade Bailey or Melancon to the Angels. Both are way better than Marmol at a fraction of the cost. Then go use that money you saved on Soriano and Soria.
JHC. It's unbelievable.
Buchholz Goes To Pool Party
Portrayed: Fresh off esophagitis, Buchholz ditches the team and goes to a pool party at Foxwods instead of meeting up with the team.
Actual: Buchholz went briefly to speak for a charity whose goal is “to help with requests for assistance, to improve the lives of local families touched by tragedy, through matching the charitable donation of Greg’s media audience.”
John Lackey Double Fisting
Portrayed: John Lackey broke team rules by bringing beer into the clubhouse after a loss. (This may or may not be in the edited story, but was in the original story)
Actual: Beer was allowed in the clubhouse after road games. Lackey broke no rules, had a beer after the game was over (not during). It was a non story.
These are just two example I can think of off the top of my head. This year was an absolute disaster for horseshit stories by the media. Even if they had an ounce of truth to them, the remaining bits of the stories were completely fabricated with zero effort.
The media has become an absolute scumbucket in Boston this year. It's at it's all time worst. Too many media members trying to get their name out there so they throw up some ******** story to try to get readers. It's embarrassing to them, the city, and the team.
Well, when the guy draws comparisons to Manny Machado, he flies past a lot of people.
I mean seriously, look at the year Barnes and Bradley had, and then the Sox acquired Webster. And Bogaerts is hands down better.
Probably because the Sox are going after him with Willingham's contract (2/14 with an option), and he's refuting that with probably a 4/60 deal.
I'm sure they're not close. if he hits the market, he'll get 3/30 probably. Not sure the Sox would go that high (or long) on him. If he goes, he goes. He wasn't a superstar by any means.
I'd just as soon see Hunter or Melky Cabrera out there.
So, reports are out that the Angels are trying to move Wells along with Haren, and speculation is that the Sox are talking to them about a Lackey for Haren + Wells deal.
Here are the numbers left on the contracts:
Lackey: $30.3mm
Haren: $15.5mm
Wells: $42mm
Total: 57.5mm
So the Red Sox would be ridding themselves of $30.3mm, and acquiring $57.5mm of salary, a difference of $27.2mm.
Here's the question. Would you make the deal if the Angels ate $25mm of the money? Essentially, you would be getting Haren for Lackey straight up, then taking Wells on a 2 year/2.2mm deal.
Thoughts? I know Wells is awful, but he still can be a nice bat off the bench and platoon player for $1.1mm, and Haren is a clear upgrade over Lackey.
If the Sox don't come down with Haren after it's all said and done, I'll be absolutely shocked. I'm penciling him in for the Sox.
It just makes too much sense.
+1
Absolutely. I'm not blaming the year on the press by any means, but lets be serious. It's completely out of control.
That's one area that I see Farrell really stepping in and putting his foot down. Then all the writers are going to bitch about how players won't talk. Get over it. Sorry you hang out at baseball games and in clubhouses all day and a pissed off player won't speak to you. Get over yourself already. Man they piss me off.
I don't know what the hold up is. Don't let him choose not to go to the Sox, and don't get in a bidding war. Take his low risk 1 year deal by giving up a fringe prospect. Hell, the Royals gave up a 27 year old AAA LOOGY for Santana. I'm sure the Sox could get Haren for Chris Carpenter or someone of the like.
Lohse is 35 years old. This team needs to get younger, not older.
Also, I think Anibal Sanchez would get destroyed in the AL East.
The Sox need to go after Haren (trade Ranaudo and get him for 1/15, then when Haren hits FA in 2014, turn that deal into a better #1 pick than you got with Ranaudo).
I see Owens as the guy who is going to surprise a lot of people for being ranked so high, but he's got maybe the best stuff of anyone in the farm according to a few Sox officials (from what I hear and read from Alex Speier, who is very plugged in).
Soria is going to be a very nice pick up for someone (hopefully the Sox) on what will likely be a 1 year deal to build value.
A lot of people are forgetting about Ryan Madson, too. He'd be a nice guy to grab on a 1 year deal as well, coming off of TJS.
I hope the Sox pick up at least 1, but preferably 2 of Soria, Soriano, Broxton, Madson. If they picked up 2, it would have to be Soria + 1 bc none of the other 3 would go to a place they weren't closing.
