  1. Baseball America's top 100 are in! #2 Xander #40 Owens #50 Bradley #73 Swihart #74 Cecchini #75 Betts #88 Webster #89 Ball
  2. Drew is the most polarizing family in all of Red Sox fandom.
  3. The front office will look awful if they don't try to resign Lester. Lester has been talking about the hometown discount a great deal. He seems convinced that Boston is the best place for his family, he has been talking about how he really doesn't want to have to get to know a whole new clubhouse. The best free agent options seem to have been dwindling. Scherzer is on the market for now, but he'll probably cost twice as much as Lester if he doesn't re-sign. Bailey is off the board. Masterson is no replacement. Any trade for a pitcher in Lester's class would cost Bradley and Owens, if not Xander. Lester pitched to a 0.59 ERA in the World Series, and seems like he will only improve with Salty away from the mound. Losing Ellsbury hurt, but losing Lester would turn the club upside down.
  4. Homer Bailey extended for 100+ million. There goes all those ridiculous Gardner-for-Bailey discussions. That number seems a bit scary though. Bailey threw 400 innings of 3.5 ERA ball for two seasons and gets that number. Lester has done that many more times, in a tougher division, coming off a huge postseason. Maybe part of it has to do with Bailey being two years younger, but still, it doesn't seem like much of a comparison.
  5. It all depends on whether or not Capuano is humble enough to put a team before himself. The Dodger's rotation was better than him, and I suspect most of the best teams in the majors will have 5 better starters than him.
  6. I am not convinced Dempster is done. I fully expect him back midseason. We all seem to forget that Dempster was worth a top 100 prospect in a midseason trade only 18 months ago. Maybe he has some nagging injuries, but he seems valuable enough that he could take some time to heal, and then help the Red Sox significantly midseason when someone else goes down. Otherwise they may need to trade someone like a Ranaudo or a Betts just to fill in a spot at #5.
  7. Ortiz is signed through age 39. Why sign him through 40 or through 41 on his terms instead of the team's terms? He's going to retire a Red Sox, but it will end exactly one way, and it will look a lot like Curt Schilling or Mike Lowell's last seasons. Give him some 5-8 million dollar player options if he is concerned about staying with the team.
  8. Rest assured Fred, there is no chance that happens. Free agents seem to be getting desperate. Ubaldo and Garza were asking 80-100 and ended up with 40-50. Spring Training is starting, and teams don't seem to need Drew. Ben has all the leverage. They're probably offering him somewhere in the ballpark of 1/8 or 2/15, and at some point he'll need to accept something.
  9. Great quote from Ortiz.
  10. Andre Ethier is Daniel Nava with a bit more power and a bit less OBP. I see no reason to spend tens of millions and trade pieces for a player that serves the same exact role as one the team already has.
  11. Last I heard is that he is throwing privately, and hasn't shown himself to scouts yet. Probably not a good sign, but he's certainly worth a minor league deal.
  12. I am holding out hope that Santana does go to the Red Sox... but I prefer Johann. One of these years, all that bottled lightning will strike with the guy, and I'd like it to be for the Sox. I'm always in favor of minor league deals with big incentives for guys that used to be top tier players.
  13. At the end of the day, the Red Sox still have more championships this century. Can't we all smugly agree on that?
  14. The intangibles are interesting here. Coming into 2013, the rotation was still filled with malcontents. Buchholz -- laptops/golfgate/beergate. Lackey -- beergate/doublefisting in a cast/cancer divorcer. Doubront -- fat. Aceves -- Aceves. Lester has seemed like he was not ready to fill that role of leader, but after his playoff performance last year, he must have earned surefire respect from all of baseball. Lester's press conferences he seemed to have added years of maturity in mere months. Dempster filled the role of a strong veteran presence -- ever since it was vacated by Wakefield in 2011. Peavy certainly helped as well, but I would not be surprised if Dempster helped stabilize a messy group. speculation>
  15. Orioles get Ubaldo for 4/48. Considering all of the reports of 80-100 million, that seems like a great pickup for them.
  16. He has quite the personality though, and seems pretty chatty. I see no reason why he couldn't end up announcing games, or being an analyst.
  17. You mentioned a divorce earlier. I know nothing of divorces, but if he signed the contract during their marriage, wouldn't she be entitled to half of his previous contract? Maybe he wants to take half a season off, come back midseason when the Red Sox have injuries for 6 million or something, and still make the same amount of money he would because the contract would be signed as a single man.
  18. I am referring to the dynasty from last century. Jeter is the last remnant of that team, and the homegrown Yankee core that won several championships.
  19. Red Sox sign Francisco Cordero. He has been hurt, and hasn't had much success lately, but if he can pull it back together, the guy is a veteran, and one of the best closers of last generation. Ben doing his due diligence.
  20. I don't think they should spend all of it, but they should add some depth. Try to work out minor league contracts on remaining guys like Ryan Madsen, Johan Santana, maybe even Hanrahan, Frank Francisco or Andres Torres. Stephen Drew is still out there, but more than 1/8 or 2/12 is too much.
  21. Big news, Dempster seems to want to take the year off. Red Sox will not have to pay his salary. Now with 13 million bux to play with, what should they do? Adding another starter would be awesome. This also gives plenty of room to resign Stephen Drew.
  22. Really encouraging article from Boston Globe. Apparently Felix Doubront was working out early in December, and then came back quickly after the holidays. Great to hear that he is welcoming the extra conditioning -- maybe this is the year he takes that step forward.
  23. He is only signed for one more year. It all depends on if if you want to share the hate based on year or spread it around.
  24. I disagree. See what I did there?
  25. Lester's terrible game was pitching 5 innings of 4 ER ball. Beckett's terrible game was pitching 4.1 innings of 8 ER ball. 4 ER is rough, but 8 ER makes a game unwinnable.
