1. I'd love to see the ring ceremony -- but apparently half of Boston does too. Tickets for opening day are $160, Saturday are $30, Tuesday are $9. Weird how it all works.
2. Nice Fred! I have been hoping to get to the game as well, but have been trying to vulture a second hand ticket at a reasonable price.
3. Stephen Drew would have made that play at SS.
4. Stephen Drew is still available:p
5. 4 RBIs for Napoli tonight!!!
6. Doubront is the #3 starter ahead of Buch and Peavy? Interesting.
7. First game of the season where I can just sit down and watch. I've missed this.
8. Where is the category for non-Taylor women?
9. Well, that was fast. I already have a pitcher undergoing season ending surgery in Bobby Parnell, and by the looks of it, Cliff 'Wins are overrated' Lee is not far behind.
10. Baseball! Heck yeah. Dodgers getting pummeled in the 8th after a gem by Ryu.
11. They have a great lineup, and have had some quality relievers the last couple of years... but that rotation just doesn't stack up.
12. Contract talks with Lester are done for now. Looks like it isn't happening. It probably makes sense -- why buy high at this point? Scherzer, Shields, Masterson, Ervin Santana are all going to be free agents. David Price and Samardzija will be available. Maybe Mat Latos. Maybe it makes sense to wait him out, let his numbers normalize a bit from last year, and put his asking price in the right range.
13. He'll still be into free agency at 28. We'll see what happens.
14. Alex Rodriguez's first contract is the best comparison here, because he was a top tier player at a premier position. He got 10/252 in 2000 at age 25. 2000 -> 2016, using the average rate of inflation, we're looking at 360 million dollars. Baseball inflation is arguably much higher than national inflation, especially with so many teams locking up their stars. Why is the dumb owner rule so strong for a guy like Max Scherzer, but not so significant for a guy with Babe Ruth/Michael Jordan/ type potential?
15. Pujols was the best player in the game.... At 1b and 32 years old. He got 240 million. Trout is the best player, will spend the contract at cf and will only be 26 at free agency. Those prime years are key to him getting higher number of contract years. Plus, he won't be stuck to AL bidders like Pujols and Cabrera would be for DH duties at 42 and 43 years old.
16. If Mike Trout continues his current pace, he'll end up being one of top 5 players to ever play the game. I doubt there are many teams who would mind paying 40 million a year for his 26-36 seasons. So much prime in there -- 12 years seems more realistic.
17. Vitek was taken in a draft that also yielded Brandon Workman, Bryce Brentz, Anthony Ranaudo, Sean Coyle, and Garin Cecchini. Workman was the 8th inning guy in a World Series run, and there is plenty of other talent in that group to make up for the Vitek pick.
18. Detroit had two more years of control here. What were they afraid of exactly? If Miggy went to free agency for his age 33 season and beyond, did they really think someone was going to outbid that number? It sounds like they had money to blow, and Scherzer wasn't having it.
19.

SoxSport

SoxSport likes to criticize pitch counts.

That's it. Quick chart, huh?

20. Scott Boras apparently had Scherzer buy an insurance policy on his own health. Apparently there was never any hope of the Tigers signing him, he was going to free agency all along.
21. We're arguing a scenario where Scherzer doesn't put up ace numbers next year. The initial debate was spurred by his .250 BABP, and low HR/FB rates in 2013.
22. Sabathia too.
