The reason why I didn't see it coming was because this season was never lost. They have been in it all along, and to see them just give up like this is a real downer. You can see it by so many things they've done this season. Ignoring the need for a better outfielder all season is inexcusable, and when they finally found one in Nava, they dropped him for garbage like Hermida and are now trying to use Kalish, who probably hasn't had enough time in AAA.
The same thing goes with Lowrie and the bullpen. How long did this team just ignore bullpen issues, and how many games has this team lost after the 6th inning? I don't have a ton of statistics, but I do know that the Red Sox are something like 4-9 in extra inning games. Why is Okajima a better choice than Robert Manuel/Dusty Richardson/Bowden?
And if they didn't like the options they had in Pawtucket (Doubront, Bowden, Nava etc) then why not trade them to fill in some of the holes?
I simply have one phrase that perfectly summarizes how they've handled the season so far.
"Bogar is still here."
