  1. It really doesn't change the fact that he shouldn't be playing every day for any contending team.
  2. I don't think A-gon is completely off the table next offseason. The Sox seem very willing to get rid of Ellsbury after a lot of issues involving his misdiagnosis and this whole season, so I can definitely see him headlining a trade, and the price for Gonzalez is only going to go down as he nears free agency.
  3. Patterson has been on the roster for 29 games. He's played 24 of them. Either its Ellsbury's fault, or its Tito's fault, but he should not be playing CF.
  4. I was talking about Jed-- he's hitting .296 because he's only had a small number of at bats. Hall has hit 11 home runs, so he's proved himself.
  5. Vmart skipped a rehab start, and Pedroia is planning on it. It makes no sense for Ellsbury to be in Pawtucket if he's good enough to play. Especially when Patterson is in CF with horrible defense and hitting .200.
  6. Small sample size. Bill Hall has 11 home runs already---If he played a full season, he'd have 22+ home runs this year.
  7. The guys on WEEI are killing him. They keep saying.. what's the good in him playing full games in AAA when the team is trotting out Patterson in CF.
  8. Ugh, Nava is not playing tonite.
  9. Lars has a problem of being a very streaky player. He dominated in AA this year, so he was promoted to AAA. His first month there, he was great, then he slumped for a month and then in july he turned it up. He definitely needs more time, but he if he can get his emotions right and avoid those long slumps, that will be the difference between him being an average player or a great one.
  10. I thought we went over this. LF is a far easier position to play than 2B. And his defense is solid, but nothing spectacular. If you want to compliment him on his offense, fine, but he's defense does not help his case.
  11. In the last few years, he's played RF. If they want to swap the two players, they can. Drew will play much harder since its going to be a contract year anyway.
  12. The FO is looking at the possibilities for 2011, and will not sign anyone long term for the corners, but they will sign someone. With A-gon, Fielder, and Pujols slated to be free agents after next year, and with the possibility of Lars coming along, I see them either trading to get one of those guys early, or just waiting it out. Between Pena/Huff/Ortiz/Dunn/Damon all available, I'm sure they'll find some combination that is cheap and short-term. Edit: At Dojji, Werth is a RF, not LF.
  13. I almost agree with you, but Lowrie will not be a starting player next year. Until he can last a year healthy AND productively, he's a huge risk for them. He's great as a utility player for them, so he'll have that role for a while. There enough cheap options at 1st that they'll sacrifice the defense for runs, as usual.
  14. I think Posada is a good benchmark for VMart, but Martinez is a lot younger than Posada was when he got his 4/52 contract. I think its going to take a bit more than that.
  15. I understand they are going to be freeing up 50 million, but do you really think they'll want to put all that money back out in one year? The guys they need to replace are crucial parts of this offense-- do you remember what this team was like without Vmart at catcher the last few weeks? If they trade for a big 1B, that's 20-25 million a year right there. 15 million a year for Werth/Crawford, 15 million more for quality bullpen help and a bench, plus more money for catcher. All the best options are going to be expensive, and paying 15 million dollars a year for a closer that is quickly becoming mediocre, and WILL be a pain in the ass if things don't go his way makes no sense to me.
  16. Well, if they're smart, they can make it work. There are enough productive DH/1st base types that they could keep Vmart as catcher for a while, with 1 year/2 year deals for DH/1st, and then slide him into a 1st/DH role depending on whether they go for a big bat in 2011. The regression in his numbers by age will be countered by the improvement of them by not catching.
  17. There is a lot of money, but they still need to replace their 4, 5 and 6 hitters -- especially considered that they skimped a lot this year and ended up getting lucky. Considering that two of the best FA bats are going to be OF, I wouldn't be surprised if they dedicated money there also, even though they need help in other positions. If I had to choose between Papelbon with Okajima or Downs with Putz, I think its an obvious choice. You also have to understand that if Papelbon starts to really underperform, and they want Bard to close, he will tear apart that clubhouse.
  18. They already have a gold glover at 3B in Polanco. Why would they want Beltre?
  19. VMart has been catching less and less throughout his career. Since he can play C/1st/DH(all three are holes that the FO will need to fill soon) I think he has enough versatility that they'll want him, and I think its pretty clear he'll be available at a small discount.
  20. Big market teams like the Red Sox know the risks of signing guys long term. They expect regression, and the last year of the contract is supposed to be paid for by the performance of the player in earlier years. Does anyone else see a lot of similarities between Lowell and Beltre? In a contract year, they have exceptionally good seasons. They're both gold glovers. Lowell hits a bit better for average over his career, but Beltre has a bit more power. Beltre is two years younger and healthier than Lowell was in 2007, but he's also coming off a crummy 2009. I'm wondering if he wants to stay here, maybe 3/40 will get it done.
  21. J J Puttz, Scott Downs, Brian Fuentes, Jon Rauch, Jason Fraser, J C Romero... The list of free agent relievers is fairly good this offseason. 10-15 million per year will very likely be able to get atleast two of them. I'd rather have two good setup guys, than one great but declining closer.
  22. He wants Rivera money, but everyone knows he's no Rivera. He's much closer to that other group, and all those other guys make anywhere from 4 to 12 mill. Honestly, I think their money is much better spent on buying two 5 million dollar setup guys for Bard than giving Papelbon the 10.
  23. I don't think this bullpen could survive losing papelbon, unless they overpay for RP in the offseason.
  24. Lowell was ready to return yesterday, but Tito told him that he should wait in case a possible trade happens so they didn't have to juggle pieces twice. Now today's here, and Lowell is still waiting.
