  1. I don't think Kalish is wasted in left. His good defense shows, and I've seen him make a lot of plays from shallow left field that not a lot of guys would have gotten to. Plus his arm is a rocket, and I can see him gunning down base runners. I think Dojji seems to think Drew might be better suited for left where he can stay healthy, and then put Kalish into RF, which would work too. What I see happening is they trade Ellsbury, get Werth, and platoon the L and R bats of Kalish and Cameron.
  2. Their career UZR/150 stats are fairly close, but now that Delgado's hip is in rough shape, I unfortunately agree that Ortiz has the edge. It makes me really hope this team can get to the world series, mostly because it would be great to finally lose the DH position, and it won't actually hurt the team much. This season when they had to choose between Ortiz, Youk, and Beltre for NL games, that was terrible.
  3. There is zero reason to hate the move. At the very worst, he makes up his minuscule contract in AAA attendance. He's no more immobile than Mike Lowell if he ends up on the Sox, and he's no worse a hitter than Patterson. Even if he breaks down, who cares? Its an extremely small short term contract. that they can dump in the blink of an eye.
  4. I still think its worth taking a shot on Dye too. They should have picked him up in May, and it is frustrating to me that there is a bat that good out there, and yet they preferred to trot out Hermida who had defense equally bad. People have been giving me the "he's rusty" angle for a while, but if they picked him up when this team's entire outfield fell off a cliff three months ago, he wouldn't be rusty, and it still isn't too late.
  5. The more I watch the guy, the more he seems like one of the "gamer" types that the Sox love so much. I'm loving watching him play because every day, it seems like he's the best outfielder on this team right now. He can very easily hit .280/20 HR/20 SB with exceptional defense. The only real question I have is-- whether 40 games in AAA is enough.
  6. C.C. has a lot of pressure on him tonite. This is really the only night where the matchup favors the Yankees. If the Sox win this, they have an excellent chance of winning the series.
  7. In all fairness, Buchholz has a tough time against the Yankees, but he has a 1.93 ERA against tampa.
  8. Trading Doubront to solve the 1st base problem? That's a steal, considering some of the prospects that might get traded for A-gon.
  9. Buchholz joined Lester this week as a crucial starting pitcher who has recently had a first child. Hopefully he can handle it a bit better than Lester has.
  10. Agreed, the Rockies were 6 games back in September of 2007, and they still got there. In other news, Okajima is feeling discomfort in his hamstring and they rushed him to the trainer after his outing last night. Why couldn't he have been feeling discomfort at the beginning of the season?
  11. Right now, between Lackey, Lester and Buch, they're averaging close to 6.5 innings per game. Beckett and Dice-k both have the potential to get it up there too.
  12. Now here's an interesting idea. Why not trade for Napoli, resign VMart, and have them take turns catching and playing first base. Neither of them should be catching full time, and their offense and health will be better because of the extra time off the plate. The drawback of less offense at 1st is more or less a wash because of the better offense at C, and by signing Napoli, there will be more money to pick up Werth or Dunn.
  13. http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/baseball/news?slug=kr-draftscoop080410 August 4th. Best I could find.
  14. Carlos Delgado is working out for the Sox this week. He hasn't played in a year, but during his last full season in 2008, he hit 38 HR with .871 OPS. Even during his short stint in 2009, he played well. I see them outbidding for him to end this season and seeing what he can do.
  15. They're not. If the Sox do trade for Gonzalez, they will end up overpaying. Also, Pedroia is one of the best 3 second baseman. A-gon barely breaks top ten at this point at first.
  16. The rest of Young's contract is 3/48. Why not just grab Beltre at that rate?
  17. Why is this a problem? The Sox could just flip those players to teams that do want them, and get pieces for the Padres that way.
  18. I'm not entirely convinced. Ortiz has looked substantially smaller at the plate (although supposedly he's the same weight). In 2008, Ortiz was underperforming because of his wrist injury, in 2009, he slumped the first half of the year, and then exploded. This year, he looked outmatched at the beginning of the year and exploded again. I also think Ortiz values his reputation in Boston. What they did in 2004 meant so much, and the steroid allegations against him are bad, but not Clemmons/Bonds bad. If he's caught again, he'll be the shame of the city. I'm not necessarily saying he isn't juicing, I just think that whatever his steroid use has been--yes or no-- its been consistent, and that you can't necessarily blame good or bad years on varied usage.
  19. Well, the problem with Lowrie is that last time he was healthy and performing was 26 months ago. They've projected that he has the talent to do a lot of good things, but 2011 is going to be a test for him. He will be the backup infielder for the team, and he has the versatility to do that well. As we learned from this season, sometimes backup players get a lot more playing time than anyone expected. And until Lowrie has a full consistent season, he's going to serve the utility role.
  20. 1B/DH types with .800 OPS get one year deals from 4-7 million. As a catcher, he's worth substantially more than that, and I see no problem giving him a 4/50 type deal.
  21. The problems between Dice-k, and this organization's training problems probably aren't going to end. I think its going to continue to be an issue for the next two years. But the fact of the matter is that he has incredible stuff. He showed that in 2008, the end of 2009, and this year too. Considering that he didn't really have a season last year, I think his adjustment period was reasonable, and after that, he's been pitching around a 3.00 ERA since. And fortunately for this team, the next WBC is in 2013.
