  1. It all depends on the value of the prospects. I would argue Lester and Cole Hummus are roughly the same value. Hummus has a career 125 ERA+, Lester 121 ERA+. Both inning eaters, both have anchored a World Series rotation. Lester costs 45 million more than Cole. Can you get him without giving up 45 million worth of prospects? Definitely.
  2. Swihart/Betts aren't going into a Cole Hamels trade. If Amaro could get that kind of value, he would have done it already. It would likely be centered around guys like Devers/Margot/Barnes, with an outside shot of Owens/Rodriguez.
  3. Hanley's attitude was a problem in Miami, but it didn't seem like it was in LA. He's older now, and hopefully more mature. So far, the general attitude coming from spring training has been awesome. These guys are thrilled to spend time together in this lineup. There will be a lot of one-up-manship -- working hard to be the best guy in the lineup. It doesn't look like that will change anytime soon.
  4. Each team was allotted with a bonus pool, and allowed to sign whoever they wanted with that money. The highest bonus pool was 5 million, which went to the Astros. So if they only signed Moncada, they would have been penalized for 30 million - the 5 million allotment, and hit with a tax of 25 million. In retrospect, it tells us exactly what kind of super stud prospect Moncada is, if he is worth that much. The max bonus was 5 million, and he cost 31.5 million to sign. The second highest bonus was 8.27 million. I sure hope he is the real deal.
  5. 23 is the cut off. Any international player above that age can be signed to big money by any team without restrictions. Also, Japanese players still abide by the posting system.
  6. Not necessarily just INT signings -- the emphasis is on building a roster of 20 year olds instead of 30 year olds. There seems to be a very strong belief in this organizations that old pitchers can't be counted on for career average performances. The big contracts for pitchers almost never work out.
  7. That's only for the draft. If a 25 year old Cuban, or Kenta Maeda becomes available, I see the Red Sox pursuing them heavily.
  8. It is starting to seem unlikely that the Red Sox go after Price/Cueto/Zimmerman next year. I think it is highly probable that the Red Sox re-sign Porcello because of his age and history in New England. If the Red Sox go for an ace, he's going to be Cuban, Japanese, or a cost controlled 25 year old that they trade a blue chip for.
  9. The Red Sox have focused on building a young core. Cole Hummus doesn't make much sense if they can't get him without trading one of those core players. If the Phillies want some combination of Cecchini, Barnes, Margo, Devers, the Red Sox may make the trade, but it seems like Swihart/Owens/Eduardo are not on the table.
  10. I can't seem to find it either. If I recall, the site move screwed up charts -- they seem to cause bugs on mobile devices here. Anyone know exact phrases that it used?
  11. Amaro's contract is up this year. More than ever, he's a guy looking to "win" trades and show his value. The Red Sox are better off waiting for him to get fired so they can trade with his replacement.
  12. I am fairly certain the the revolving door at SS has been intentional. It is a position that usually has 5 players with OPSes above .800, and the rest float around .700. The top 5 are extremely expensive -- look at deals for guys like Tulo and Reyes. It is also an injury prone position, and a defense first position. They usually make their SS prospects available in trades very quickly unless they have the potential to be one of those top 5 guys... like Bogaerts.
  13. Castillo?
  14. Ben was not kidding about building the "next great Red Sox team". Maybe these guys won't pan out, but it is very clear the Red Sox have focused on getting younger. Moncada, 19. Castillo 27. Pablo, 28. Porcello 26. Joe Kelly, 26. Wade Miley 28. Masterson 29. Hanley 31. Plus a bunch of top international draftee pitchers.
  15. Didn't Pawtucket just renew their contract? I've really enjoyed going to that park over the years, too bad they're moving to Providence.
  16. Good vibes, even from Jacko.
  17. This move is like "buying" a top prospect. Some of the prospect guys have ranked him as a top 5-10 prospect. Is it worth it? Who knows, but if he prospers, better here than New York.
  18. I had criticized the FO for not signing more international prospects like the Yankees. Apparently the Red Sox had saved some money for an impact player. This seems like a good price-- hopefully he is really only 19, and they can find a spot in the infield for him.
  19. I am highly in favor of speeding up the game, and I have talked to that at length. However, I recently heard about the TBS ******** where they are speeding up Seinfeld to 1.07x speed in order to fit in more commercials. If done properly, this will help the game significantly. If they use it to squeeze more money out of fans, I doubt it will go over well.
  20. Dempster came in 6th for a CY Young once.
  21. I think we should all consider Joe Kelly to be the cheap version of Ryan Dempster, and it will make us much happier. He's not going to win any awards, but he plays hard, stays healthy, and keeps the entire team in good spirits. He's also 12.5 million cheaper than Dempster.
  22. Sure, but rebuilding teams don't generally trade top prospects -- especially the kind Amaro wants.
  23. Getting on the D line back is a nightmare. I have left in the 7th or 8th innings before (in my various games where Beckett/Dicek gave up 7-8 runs early) and it is actually futile. No D lines run between the 7th and 8th inning -- they hold all trains until the game is over, so you can be waiting 30 minutes until a train arrives, at which point it is packed. The people who go to games once-a-year are too in awe to realize what a challenge it is to go to games. That being said, I am glad to be only a 5 minute walk now.
  24. The Braves are in rebuild mode. I doubt they are offering the Red Sox anything worthwhile.
  25. Don't those lots all charge you for parking too? Only $8 or so, but then you're paying $5 a person for the train.
