    But if we decide to go with Doubront instead of Wakefield, as you suggested, when Doubront goes down, there will be no Wakefield to replace him.

    I liked Doubront last season, but he's had atleast 3 injuries since his debut. He might not be healthy enough to hold down a spot for the full year.

    I didn't say he wouldn't get that, I just meant the Red Sox probaly won't pay that. And AW took off all players who will be free agents in 2012. The huge bump in salary because of A-gon's contract definitely hits the team hard on the luxury tax. It does seem to make more sense to let Papelbon go, and grab the draft picks. 3/45 is too much to pay for reliever, especially considering how inconsistent RP can be. With the sole exception of Mo, paying large amounts of money for relievers usually ends up being a bust. See K-Rod, Soriano, Joe Nathan, Jenks, Lidge.

    If they didn't try to lock Bard up (In April/May, so no luxury tax implications) they would be mighty foolish.

    The Sox are in much better shape for this series since Wakefield went long on Sunday, and gave the bullpen two full days of rest. Three games in 27 hours could have potentially really messed up this team otherwise.

    I was so frustrated with all the hate Wakefield was getting on his last start. He pitched a complete game, with only 4 ER, and he was constantly getting hammered in the thread. This is a guy whose stuff has not changed. He can still throw the 60 MPH heat, and knuckleball, the only thing that has changed and will change is his conditioning, and health. His ERA has fluctuated around 4 his whole career, and with his less mobility, this year he's at a 4.90. Some days he gets lit up, some days he goes the distance. If you don't like knuckleballers, fine, but that's what they are. Wakefield is a guy making the league minimum, and being asked to start when two or three guys in front of him cannot. If I said he was a great player, I'd be lying, but sometimes a team needs filler, and that's exactly what he is, decent filler.

    Fair enough. It does raise the question-- how much of that money will be allotted for Papelbon/Ortiz? If they have 28 million to spend, will 20-24 million on those two guys limit what they can do?

    I was a little scared there around midnight last night when a lot of big names were still holding, but it looks like the Sox got 13 of their top 15 guys. I should know by now that the deadline for onlookers doesn't necessarily mean everything will be announced.

    It isn't like that 70 million is being instantly chopped off. From 2011 to 2013, these are the differences in salaries (arb players use your estimates, with a slight increase) Crawford-- 6 million more Adrian Gonzalez-- 16 million more Lester-- 6 million more Pedroia-- 4.5 million more Buchholz 5 million more Bard estimated 4 million more Albers estimated 4 million more Saltamacchia estimated 6 million more Ellsbury 10 million more That's 61.5 million just in raises. That's before this team decides if they want to take Youkilis option, before they figure out who their 5th starter is, before they decide if they want to keep Papelbon, or Ortiz, before giving a team friendly contract to the younger guys. That's with losing the majority of their bullpen, and that's with two more years of John Lackey ahead of them, and five more of Carl Crawford.

    FYI, I didn't mean that as a criticism to you by any means, but the article points out a few things, like how he has only called 200 games in the minors. There is also a really tough thing for a lot of us to take--he needs a considerable amount of more time to develop his game-calling abilities. They did mention something else that caught my eye-- he has the 4th most home runs in the minors this year.

    Very interesting. Just for everyone out there, Dojji pointed out a lot of positives, but didn't throw in all the negatives, so I'd definitely recommend reading the article.
