  1. Considering the team is missing Youkilis and Ortiz, that still looks like a pretty solid lineup. Reddick, Lavarnway and Lowrie aren't great now, but they're not terrible.
  2. I get the feeling that some of Beckett's struggles were very much mental and having his binky Varitek has helped him have this career year of his. I know it is a no-no to bring up accusations of inside issues for players while sitting at home, but watching that game against the Yankees last year where he absolutely imploded was very telling. I don't think he would have had this kind of success this year with Martin, and the Red Sox definitely know what Varitek brings to the table.
  3. Verlander is a tough pitcher, but the Sox have really struggled with Texas this year. I also think Texas will give the Yankees a lot more trouble than the Tigers, mostly because they are the only team besides the Red Sox that I think has a chance to to outslug the Yankees for the middle games in the series. I'll take Verlander and company any day of the week.
  4. I don't know if you've noticed, but the Yankees have an uncanny ability to trade garbage for elite players.
  5. Season numbers: Salty's OPS .756 Varitek's OPS .726 Martin's OPS .717 Martin also cost twice as much as Varitek and Salty combined. If the Sox went for Martin, you know the Yankees would have just gotten someone else.
  6. Are your standards at catcher unrealistic because you've seen so much of Mauer and Varitek? League average at that position is absolutely abysmal. There has been an influx of young phenom catchers, and what has happened to them? Posey is out for the season. Wieters has a .720 OPS. Montero is probably going to end up a DH/1B. Veterans age fast and either retire early or move to another position. At the beginning of the season, we had a few options. Trade for Suziki... .672 OPS. Sign John Buck, .702 OPS. My personal choice, Miguel Olivo, is hitting .210 with a .610 OPS. Victor Martinez is hitting .815, but doesn't catch anymore, and would cost a significant amount more.
  7. Varitek hit 7 home runs over 36 games last year. I think that being an aging catcher just makes you injured and lose your pop. Not everyone is like Pudge who will catch forever.
  8. Because if Fielder is playing instead of A-gon, that hurts the team defensively. Part of the reason they paid A-gon so much was because he had a good glove. Your argument would mean more if Papi played 1B in AL games, but he never does. Getting Fielder would also significantly weaken the team in any interleague games with no-DH because they'd be paying a guy 20 million to sit on the bench, one way or the other.
  9. Is it just me, or does that lineup look significantly better at the bottom than the top?
  10. Why wouldn't he be a fulltime DH to begin with? Where is A-gon going to be for this? Neither A-gon or Fielder fit in any position except for 1B, so one will be DHing, and the other will be 1Bing, and the logical thing to do is put the gold glover at 1b, and the big guy at DH. Theo has messed up on so many big contracts already...why risk 120+ million more on a overweight DH whose father's performance plummeted at an early age? Fielder is a great hitter, sure, but that offensive pedigree at DH is worth significantly less.
  11. Oh, and this is pretty relevant too. Fielder is yet another lefty who hits righties significantly better than lefties. Career numbers versus LHP .258/.340/.460/.801 versus RHP .294/.410/.575/.984 He really just doesn't fit with this team, and unless they get a real bargain, he's not coming to Boston.
  12. Player A .300/.388/.557/.945/24 HR Player B .305/.415/.561/.977/28 HR They both will probably start to show serious signs of decline very soon, neither are better defensive 1B than A-gon. Why on earth would this team go with a 120+ million dollar contract to Fielder when it could get Ortiz for 20?
  13. So combining the results of the three studies, apparently participants have lower slg, but not lower HRs. Interesting.
  14. Colby Lewis has had a 3.80 ERA the last two years, pretty much the same age, the same division as a guy that got 80 million in 2010 for being a 3.80 ERA starter. Liriano was the ace for a playoff team last year... I sort of just forgot that he sucks this year:lol: But the rest of that list is very good. John Danks/Shaun Marcum would be an exceptional #2 starter for pretty much any team, and the other four are legit aces.
  15. I didn't see the details, but it will probably work out to be 13 million for his last arbitration year, and 18x4 after that. 18 million year is still pretty good. And 2012 is actually a time when there will be a TON of elite pitchers on the market. Matt Cain, Chris Carpenter, Cole Hamels, Zach Greinke, Shaun Marcum, John Danks, Colby Lewis, Liriano.
  16. Jared Weaver locked up for 5/85. Great news, I had been getting afraid of him defecting to the Yankees, but then again, it looks like a very good class of pitchers that will be available after the 2012 season.
  17. Don't bother with Soxsport, he never knows what he's talking about, and even if you completely reject the argument he makes with stone cold facts, he'll regurgitate it in the next thread. Kind of like me, except with fewer posts.
  18. Beltran was injured half of 2009 and half of 2010. It really didn't make a whole lot of sense to assume he'd be healthy all year, especially the later half when he was bound to be beaten up.
  19. Wandy has had an ERA of 3.50/3.60/3.02/3.54 in 2011, 2010, 2009 and 2008. He'd be a great pickup, but I'd be surprised if they want to spend that kind of money on him. He very easily could end up with the Yankees, since they were pushing for him before.
