How can you say the Beltran trade wasn't a failed deal? Trading for a guy who is always injured makes you run the risk of that player getting injured. If Bedard got a blister on his hand and didn't pitch in the playoffs, would you say it was a failed deal? I certainly would, even though his knees are the problem.

Teams will fight for a playoff bye. See the NFL, that extra week of recovery is huge for them. Could you imagine a three game series against Weaver/Haren/Santana, or Price/Shields/Hellickson? If I was a member of the Red Sox, I'd play hard just to avoid that. Expanding the playoffs definitely is about money. I don't argue that, but at the same time, do you remember the days when the Red Sox weren't a lock for the playoffs. It sucks. Expanding the playoffs would mean a lot to the fans as well, and all those fanbases that are just on the cusp of getting to the top, but not quite.

You also have to realize, this could be different on any given year. If there was only one playoff team from each division, if there was one standout team from each division, those playoff races could be pretty much done as well. I recall one occasion a few years back when the Yankees pretty much had the division locked up, but in August, the Red Sox were fighting with the Rangers for the wild card. The three game series that the MLB is discussing will accomplish two things. One, more teams will be involved in the playoff hunt, and two, it will give teams a reason to want to win their division.

He averaged a 2.80 ERA and exactly 200 IP for the first three years of his contract. If he recovers from his surgery, I'd bet he'll be back to being an ace by mid 2012. -
Only caught highlights of this one. I don't know about anyone else, but I didn't expect Lackey to beat Sabathia from the beginning. Games 2 and 3 should be fun.

It seems like the only teams in need of a 1B/DH type are the low budget teams. I'd be okay with him headlining a deal for a #2 type starter, or a quality shortstop, but besides that, he's probably more valuable continuing to try to work on catching.

SFF didn't mention what he thought would happen when Youk gets back until after I posted my first comment. All he said was that Crawford would get a pyschological boost from putting him second, to which you made the binky comment.
