  1. So? The organization still needs to pay them 500k a piece. Even with a 40% luxury tax, we're talking 2.8 million for Wheeler, and if you take out the 500k min for rostered players, he'd really only cost 2.1 over the minimum.
  2. The Red Sox have been loading up on all this depth this offseason. Cook, Silva, Padilla, Mortensen.... do you think any single one of those guys could contribute like Wheeler did in 2010? I don't think its even close. They paid 4 million a year for Wakefield for a decade, and they can't pay 2 million on Wheeler? I'm not buying it.
  3. I really disagree on Ugla. Even with last year, he's been one of the most consistent second basemen in the majors.
  4. On occasion, there are arguments on this board where one member posts stats about a player to defend their own position, and another member puts up weak evidence, and uses no real stats whatsoever. Please don't join the second group.... if you think he's done, atleast throw something else out there. Maybe he likes the low cost of living in Cleveland, maybe he managed to buy Lebron's house on the cheap, maybe he fell in love with Suns, or maybe he just happened to be coming off a mediocre 2011 in an offseason where a ton of relief pitching was available, doesn't have much for a market, and has a really bad agent.
  5. Oh come on... unless Wheeler is hurt, that was a terrible move:lol:
  6. You know its a bad offseason when people get excited about Cody Ross:lol:
  7. Wishful thinking?
  8. This is all assuming the team stays healthy all year. Buchholz/Bard won't break 160 innings. Bailey will be around 40-50. There will be openings in this roster, and at 2 million, I wish they would have given him a shot.
  9. Albers's CAREER is a decline phase. I wasn't expecting him to dominate, I was expecting him to be a great 6th inning option for 2 million, with maybe a 3.75 ERA.
  10. For some strange reason, Dan Wheeler is one of those players that is severely underrated in the majors. He only got a 1/3 contract at age 33, coming off those three VERY good years with Tampa. Scott Boras would have gotten him a 3/30 contract and an opportunity to close with those numbers.
  11. Errr... what? Giving a one year contract to a 34 year old so a guy with a 5.00 career ERA can pitch is not blocking anyone.
  12. This is a f***ing shame. Seriously, to let Wheeler go on a friggen minor league contract? They get no picks, and they lose a guy who would have been a bargain. I think this is the worst move of the offseason by the Red Sox front office so far.
  13. Also, I can look at wikipedia too... but really, using a single writer's opinion as a reason why this team will fail is just silly.
  14. Who did he say was going to win the World Series last year?
  15. Err... who is Sean McAdams, and why should we care?
  16. Deep negotiations is one thing... but now the Red Sox officially have a deal on the table. Very big difference.
  17. I'm not sure what you're expecting here. They found the money, and they put out two offers. Oswalt and Jackson both wanted significantly more money than the market is willing to give, so odds are that they will take some time to decide if the offers are right for them. The White Sox just got a whole lot worse in their division with the Fielder signing, so Floyd's value isn't exactly going up. You're being impatient, and that's all there is to it.
  18. BEN WROTE TWO CHECKS!!! Please cash it Oswalt!!!
  19. If it happens, it probably happens tonight. Two big offers out there. Who knows, maybe both pitchers will accept?
  20. He had a crummy season, he's a whiney little bitch and he's expensive... but when it comes down to it, he's probably one of the top 5 most talented hitters in the MLB, and he plays at the weakest offensive position. There are probably 28 other teams who'd devastate their farm system to have him.
  21. So I really want to point something out to TalkSox. Has anyone else noticed that the Red Sox have gotten significantly younger this year? If Ortiz had rejected arbitration like they thought he would, we might be seeing a Red Sox team with all the major players 33 and under. That's really saying something, that despite how established some of these players are, all of them are on the right side of 30. They're dropped Wakefield-- 45. Varitek-- 40. Scutaro 36. Papelbon -- 31. They've picked up Punto--34. Shoppach 32. Bailey 27. Melancon 26. Their oldest players? Ortiz 36. Punto 34. Youkils 33. Beckett 32. That's the worst it gets. The team's oldest player is someone who doesn't need to field the ball, the next guy is a bench player, and the next after that is 33 years old.
  22. Why isn't anyone asking the crucial question.... Where on earth does he play? Cabrera is righthanded, sure, but does anyone really see him playing 3B full time? Its not like you can let Vmart catch because you have Avila, and when Vmart comes back, he probably shouldn't catch with his health anyway. They have three more years of Vmart, four more years of Cabrera, and nine more years of Fielder. They essentially paid 215 million a year for a DH... This contract will make the Crawford signing seem like a bargain.
