  1. Cliff Lee continues to be a terrible idea. He's 34 years old, coming off a decline year, and signed for big money for big years. He's everything that this team did so well to get rid of this week. He's not a 50 million dollar improvement over Doubront. The Phillies aren't willing to just give him away either-- The Dodgers would have taken him at full price. if they have to bite 15 million for him, they'll demand a next-tier prospect like Swihart/Owens. That kind of money/prospects will be far more worthwhile.
  2. I've been in favor of getting rid of him the last few years. But this year, the Red Sox absolutely need him back. Salty hit 20 home runs from the left side this year. The next highest? 4, from Daniel Nava. That will be a problem.
  3. How does everyone feel about resigning Dice-k next year?
  4. I like the idea of Lincecum, personally. The Red Sox need star players on short deals/contract years. The Giants have put big money into their other young players recently (probably because they don't see Lincecum as someone they can afford), and only have one more year of control over him. Unfortunately because of his starpower, it'll definitely take a quality prospect like Swihart/Owens to pull him here, and then he'll have to adjust to the AL East, so it might not be a great fit.
  5. If you don't give anyone a closer's job, then you don't have to give anyone a closer's money in arbitration. Probably planned that way.
  6. Fun fact-- the Red Sox have upwards of 100 million coming off the books. As grim as the free agent market may look, I think that the best bet for the Red Sox is going to be short one or two year deals anyway. If you have to throw out 1/10, 1/15, maybe even 1/20 deals to get the guys you want, the money is absolutely there. Priority #1-- Re-sign Ross and Ortiz. Those guys anchor this team, and can definitely be had. Find a first baseman. Someone who can mash and play the easiest defensive position in baseball. Seriously, its first base-- Get creative. Maybe Marcum isn't seeing the money he wants because of his short season, and would accept a 1/15 deal, same thing for Brandon Mccarthy. There are a good number of second tier pitchers out there, Sanchez, Dempster and many team-optioned players headline that group.
  7. I agree with your assessment. It always surprises me how people so often ignore reason because you're a Yankees fan. It will be tough for the Red Sox to compete, but that being said, look at how much the Red Sox dump in salary. Not only do they dump 60 million per year, they also lose about 40 million more deadweight on top of that in Dicek, Jenks, Youk, and 15 million more is going to Ortiz. They could actually sign Hamilton, Greinke, and Napoli, and potentially still be under the luxury tax. Not really a great idea, but that also means they could sign good-great impact players on 10/1 deals. Look at how big an impact Kuroda has had on the Yankees. Jackson, Ross, Scutaro, etc etc. As long as they don't turtle, they'll have significant room to operate.
  8. John Farell came to the team in 2007 with a pile of veteran pitching, already ready to go, not to mention Jason Varitek and they won the WS off all the work that had been done before him. He was particularly bad at fixing mechanical flaws in pitchers. Younger pitchers were often afraid to talk to him-- Manny Delcarmen mentioned that in an interview. His personality seriously clashed with Dice-k. I've never liked him very much.
  9. Someone is grilling him hard on the baseball show this morning hahahaha.
  10. He was around in 2010 when the beer and chicken group reportedly first came together. He was also a pretty miserable pitching coach.
  11. Let's just hope they don't touch Pedroia.
  12. Andrew Miller? He simply doesn't work well as a starter, we saw that in 2011 and he's had the best season of his career as a reliever. Why mess with it?
  13. Cody Ross has been one of the few bright spots on this season.
  14. Any half decent catcher could have made that play. Salty refuses to block the plate. Get him off this team please.
  15. After all the ******** Frankenstein garbage he pulled, they get him for cheating in a different way? And so ends the career of my least favorite player of all time. May a picture of your ass be placed in display in the Yankee hall of fame.
  16. Agreed.Did any of these guys play with Pesky? Were any of them managed by Pesky? Heck, there are only a 5 players on the team that have been around longer than 2-3 years. Let Pesky's family grieve, not people who were strangers to him. Not to mention that on Tuesday they had Johnny Pesky day at Fenway, where all the players wore his number, and got to celebrate his life in their own way-- playing baseball.
  17. After everything that we've heard this seasons, I think it is time to stop blaming the GM for the problems of this organization and look higher up in the organization.
  18. Wow. Put on 200 more pounds, and Pineda is turning into Bobb Jenks. Well, that and trade a guaranteed future hall of famer for him.
  19. McClure is just a scapegoat for Saltalamacchia. DFA Salty.
  20. Yep, seeing it too. Looks like the posts are set to 95% width, and have some weird padding.
  21. This is something we've been talking about for a while. Definitely let him do it. I might want until Daniel Nava gets back from the DL, but honestly, does it really make a difference to let him have the surgery earlier rather than later?
  22. The problem is that there aren't any good sabermetrics to measure the effectiveness of catchers, and the Red Sox ignore such worthless primitive stats like caught stealing, catcher's era, and passed balls. I've been trying to dig a big on catcher defense, but can't find a whole lot. This article rates Salty as #82 of 83 defensive catchers. Big surprise. http://blogs.thescore.com/mlb/2012/06/07/fogging-the-measure-catcher-defense-ratings-june-2012-edition/
  23. Yeah, with CC going in for Tommy John, and Andy Pettite retiring for real this time, it'll be a fun ALDS getting beaten down by the Angels.
  24. In the 7th inning of a game a few weeks ago, I jokingly said that Aviles would hit a walkoff. SFF made a sig bet, and it didn't go so well for him heh.
