  1. Firstly, you weren't going to get Ortiz on a one year deal. Period. I have absolutely no problem with the money or years-- what bothers me is that it took so long for the Red Sox to get it done... when essentially they gave Ortiz exactly what he wanted. He was asking for 2/25-30, and that's exactly what he got. Haren could have been had simply by taking his contract, and the front office was too busy "negotiating" with Ortiz.
  2. I don't touch Upton or Bourne with a ten foot pole. Crawford majorly f***ed up the market for speedy outfielders. I'm still very much sold on Shane Victorino however.
  3. What really bugs me about the whole situation is that Haren could literally have been had for nothing if they wrapped up the Ortiz situation first. The Angels declined his option and ended up having to pay 3.5 million for him. The Red Sox could have simply taken him off their hands for 13-14 million on a one-year deal. We're talking about taking a 32 year old, with a career 3.60 ERA on a one year deal, and Cherrington choked. Very very disappointing. I am worried that this offseason is going to turn into the same situation as last year. Overpaying in trades, losing players at key positions for no return and whiffing on the best free agent deals that could be had.
  4. Look at his stats. The second half of the year, he had a 3.58 ERA with a 1.12 WHIP. If he declined down the stretch, I'd believe you, but the numbers tell me that his back got better midway through the year.
  5. Epic fail Cherrington, epic fail. Very disappointed that the Red Sox could not get it done. They were too busy working on a contract with Ortiz that should have been done weeks ago-- even though they essentially ended up giving him exactly what he wanted anyway. Very very disappointed by this. We're going to end up with Liriano and Baker in our rotation next year, and that really sucks.
  6. I hope they get this done within the hour. The boys of the front office need to get in touch with the Angels, and bring Haren to Boston before the night is out.
  7. I'm not referring to honest journalism. I'm referring to made up fabricated ******** tabloids with anonymous sources. There is not a player in the MLB who will be able to survive the s***-storm of the media here if they don't like you-- surely you must have figured that out by now.
  8. I never have a problem with the Yankees's roster replacing its players with older player with slightly worse stats.
  9. Compare Haren's stats, and off year tendencies to Beckett, and you'll realize Haren is a significant upgrade.
  10. Being allowed access to a team's clubhouse and press conferences is a privilege, not a right. Media outlets may have contracts with the Boston Red Sox, but I doubt that there are specific individuals in name on those contracts. Its time for this town's sports writers stop acting like paparazzi.
  11. I think he meant "or" not "and". Honestly, I just don't see that many fits. He won't go to losing teams like the Royals, Guardians, Twins, Mariners, Astros. Tampa can't afford him, and he absolutely doesn't fit their style. The Yankees would need to shed A-Rod first. The Angels have Morales. The Tigers have Vmart. The White Sox have put a ton of money into pitching already and have other holes to fill. Oakland can't afford him. That leaves Toronto, Baltimore, and the Rangers. The problem, as per usual, is that there aren't that many good fits for David Ortiz. The Red Sox want him here. No one is going to give him 3 years. Why bother with the charade? Compromise at 2/23 and move on.
  12. If they do sign Greinke, they need to speak to the media before-hand. Any news organization who gives him s*** in his first year would be banned from press privileges. What the press is doing to this team is getting out of control.
  13. His 2011 and 2010 seasons would make him a #2 or #3 in Boston. He's pretty similar to Josh Beckett. He either dominates and pitches a lot of innings, or he's mediocre. His 4.30 ERA post- All-Star Break definitely shows he still has it. Wish the Red Sox had given him a look for the back end of their rotation.
  14. Well s***. The Bailey trade was an awful move. He need to perform this year.
  15. Uncanny.
  16. Dan Haren is looking more and more appealing to me. It sounds like the Angels are going to decline his option, unless someone wants to take him off their hands and save them from the expensive buyout. 1/15 for Dan Haren, ace potential, low cost? I bet they could get him from the Angels for a mid-range chip, like Ranaudo or Wilson. On one hand, the Angels won't get a compensation pick, but they also won't have to pay the expensive buyout either. That is a move that sends a message to free agent players-- this team is going to be back at the top of the division soon enough. I'm also thinking about Greinke. If he has gotten over his anxiety, why not? The guy is legit, and doesn't cost prospects.
  17. Phenomenal move by the White Sox. They were on the hook for 5 million already, so they're looking at 2/24 on a guy coming off an ace caliber season. Taking Floyd's option was another smart move from that organization. Those two signings will hit the FA pitching market hard. But seriously, where can you get pitchers from?
  18. Sanchez is probably going to cost more than Peavy. The White Sox aren't willing to pay 15 million for him (subtracting the buyout). He's had a lot of bad years lately. Sanchez is actually more proven right now, and looking for 60-100 million, which went up after good playoff performance.
  19. One is incredibly evil, and the other is a stuffed poodle who never wins?
  20. Johnson is a roll of the dice. He could very easily get hurt, and cost a solid prospect, and a lot of money. But he's also a 28 year old who could be an ace. The Red Sox need to do their homework on his health, and see what he is going to cost. If they could get them for Doubront and Britton, absolutely pull the trigger, and don't sign him. Worst case scenario you get a first rounder, but he may sign back here anyway.
  21. That's Jason Bay with the Mets, not the Yankees.
  22. If this is true, doesn't that also point to Peavy as the must-have guy on the free agent market?
  23. Josh Johnson needs to be a target this offseason. When healthy, he is a true ace. The only available players that can have the same said of them are Greinke, Peavy, Lincecum, and Cliff Lee. Unless the Red Sox want to trade Bogaertz, Barnes, Bradley, and Middlebrooks all together for Felix, the only way they will get a true ace is by finding the gem in that group. They absolutely need to do their homework and figure out if his injuries are chronic or unlucky but they definitely need to look into him.
  24. Also, Gavin Floyd is going to turn out to be the bargain of the offseason-- calling it now.
  25. This concern comes up frequently. The problem is, there are limited markets where Fenway-appropriate pitchers can come from. The National League is mostly out, with the exception of a select few teams with very hitter friendly parks like Philly and Colorado. The AL West is mostly out because Seattle/LAA/Oakland are very pitcher friendly parks. The AL East is tough, because no one is going to trade to the Red Sox without overpaying. It seems to me like the only logical place to pull players from is the AL Central. Problem is, the AL East champions are the only team in that division with good pitching. So, in conclusion, we have all the more reason to sign Jake Peavy.
