  1. Ranaudo shut down with a groin injury. Seems like yet another of those players who can't stay heathly.
  2. I'm referring to a post from a few weeks ago specific to Napoli, not related to pitching.
  3. I made this exact same argument, and your response was that there are too many ifs involved. Change your mind?
  4. *whistles* http://www.talksox.com/forum/talk-sox-forum/16863-poll-buccholz-ace.html Same exact thread, except with a poll. Maybe we can merge threads? Mods have been quiet lately.
  5. With all the championships in the last decade, there is a mandate to win. The losers are discarded for the current winner. The core fans are still around, but people don't want to pay $100 a ticket for the Sox anymore.
  6. I've purchased quite a few the last few years, but I'm planning on just getting them secondhand in 2013. Why pay more when you can buy them from secondhand dealers for half the price?
  7. Okay, Beltre may have been a stretch-- I'm also forgetting that they picked up Swihart and Bradley in that phenomenal draft class-- but Sabathia/Holliday were as much of a sure thing as you'll find. They're very rare players who find free agency, but those are the players you need to break the bank for, not the kind of players the Red Sox have in the past. I definitely understand that there is a long list of very good players who come from the lower digits. But looking at the drafts, I don't see a big difference in the number of all-stars from #6-10 and #10-15 and so on. The only way for the Red Sox to really make a difference in the draft is to be a bottom 5, which I think would destroy the fanbase, significantly decrease revenue streams, forcing lower player payroll and be more trouble than it is worth. They can get a superstar with this #7 pick-- but bombing the next few seasons?
  8. I also think the Red Sox need to keep their eyes out on the free agent market over the next few years for generational talent, and overpay only if the player is a complete and utter stud. There have been only a handful of those guys that have hit the free agent market, and it was obvious to everyone at the time. Matt Holliday, CC Sabathia, Manny Ramirez come to mind quickly. Even Adrian Beltre with his elite glove and a bat that we all knew had just been stifled in Seattle. Those guys didn't have the huge glaring question marks of Lackey/ Crawford/Jenks.
  9. I disagreed with J_E when he had the same exact argument in basketball, and in baseball I disagree significantly more here. Mike Trout was picked 25th in the draft. Heyward 14th. Lincecum 10th. Ellsbury 23rd.Weaver 12th, Papelbon 114th. Ethier 62nd. Those aren't lucky examples either, in baseball, there are fewer sure things, and more talent later in the draft. It is one thing if they can get the #1 pick, but with complete losers like the Marlins out there, they are looking at #4 or higher, and that isn't worth bombing the season for. The best way to go is sign a pile of high annual value, one or two year contracts on players who will rebound, and be good enough to offer arbitration and get those sandwich round picks. There is going to be more value in two picks in the low 20s/30s than one pick in the lower digits.
  10. Maybe there are unaccounted for health issues? Three arbitration years of Hanson, and I would have given up a very nice package, personally. Wonder if the Red Sox were in on him?
  11. Its sounding like the second tier pitching market hasn't developed because everyone is waiting for Greinke/Sanchez to find homes.
  12. Guys, don't get your hopes up. Even if the Yanks can't afford Napoli now, he'll either 1) come to play there for free 2) they'll find someone to pick up A-rod's entire contract, and they'll save money there 3) Sign elsewhere, while the Yankees get Mauer for no prospects with the Twins paying the majority of his contract. Isn't that how it happens every year anyway?
  13. Part of me feels like they need to just dump Rich Hill. He's very talented, and Boston born, but does anyone actually believe he'll ever be healthy again?
  14. Why would they trade a 30 year old first baseman with a career .347 OBP and .839 OPS, and then immediately sign a 33 year old first baseman with a career .338 OBP /.820 OPS? This probably means the end of Laroche's time in Washington, and delivers him into Boston's lap for a 2/20 deal.
  15. Especially since he has played his entire career on a team with no offensive talent who simply win games because they play hard.
  16. What is more expensive for a closer-- 3.5 million, or 4 million and a cost controlled 30 HR, gold glove winning right fielder? Madson is only making 3 million above league minimum, that's definitely worth a risk for the Angels.
  17. They spent 6 million on their 3rd catcher, and 10 million on a platoon outfielder who might just be better suited for DH. I wouldn't lose sleep over Madson's contract. Remember when you thought 12 million for Jenks was a good idea?
  18. The argument against Fred's Red Sox loyalty should be pretty much over. He's said on many occasions that it took him a few years of jumping to different teams, and it finally stuck. Since he's been behind the Red Sox through 2011/2012, I believe that it will continue to stick... assuming that Ben stops napping:lol:
  19. All three seems silly. The most likely scenario is that you would have an outfield of Swisher/Ross/Gomes/Ellsbury. Who do you platoon? Who will play center when Ellsbury gets hurt? The other scenario is that Swisher plays 1B, but then Napoli has to share catching duties with Lavarnway/D-Ross/Salty, and when interleague play comes for 30 games and Ortiz is sitting on the bench, it gets even crazier.
  20. Judging by the rest of their offseason moves, I would expect Jorge Posada to come out of retirement soon.
  21. Very glad Ben stayed away from Upton and Broxton today. Both crazy overpaid contracts.
  22. We see it happen all the time. Elite players move from one environment to another, and take some time to adjust. Crawford, Adam Dunn, Josh Beckett coming into Boston... we see it very very frequently.Losing Tek, Farrell, Tito, Wake, Beckett a pile of coaches and others changed what Boston meant to Jon Lester. And as far as complaining about pitches... when your catcher can't frame pitches, you don't get the calls you once did.
  23. Your parents named you after a fax machine? Welcome
  24. Napoli saw the Rangers today. They must not be very high on him if they didn't offer him arbitration. I'd bet that he wants to stay there, and needed them to tell him he isn't part of their long term plans before he would sign elsewhere.
  25. In all fairness, he was nominated for the Clemente award for his cancer foundation. I felt the vibe that he was trying to distance himself from the rest of the pitching staff, and with the miscommunication from the coaches, and everything going on, he lost his pitch. In the last year, Tito, Tek, Wake, Beckett and a pile of others who provided him leadership left, and I think that he still needs to wake up and step into the role. So many people have talked about the simple glitch in his throwing mechanics, now is the time for it to get fixed.
