  1. Sure, but you're also giving up a considerably larger number and quality of prospects here.
  2. The beauty of having a surplus of talent is if some don't pan out or get injured, you're still in good shape. Look at how small-mid market teams have built their franchises. They hold onto their chips. We've seen the Red Sox and Yankees get shafted on so many trades. They're the best team in baseball right now, and they have superstars in the making in the farm system. Why not wait?
  3. I'm not comparing this to the Dodgers. I'm comparing Stanton to Gonzalez, and surely you must see why it is a valid comparison.
  4. This. Putting the organization's entire future in the hands of one player seems ridiculous. The 2012 Dodgers won't be around next time.
  5. Stanton has played an average of 120 games the last two years. The guy hasn't been healthy. If someone is willing to overlook that and sell the farm to get him, why wouldn't they take the deal instead of running the risk of seeing him get hurt again? Stanton could singlehandedly restock their farm, but if he gets hurt next year, they'll probably only be able to get 1-2 top prospects instead of 3-5.
  6. Prince Felix very well might be one of the Red Sox's best trade chips right now. He's a strong lefthander who has just about proven that he's a #3 on most teams. How many starts in a row did he go without giving up more than 3 runs? 20 something? If he could come into Spring Training in shape, he'd be a beast in the NL. Did I mention he's a 25 year old with 4 more years of control?
  7. Anyone get ALDS tickets today? I went on today, but f***ing redsox.com is a piece of garbage and the website kept giving error messages.
  8. Pretty much everyone except kids who live in the suburbs with their parents
  9. Kansas City with a big walk off grand slam in the 10th against Texas. They look good with their last two series against Seattle and Chicago. Doubt they make it, but still makes for an exciting final week.
  10. I never said they were worth the money.
  11. The team looks sluggish today. Too much champagne I bet.
  12. Napoli has been had a .921 OPS since the All-Star break. Who is to say that maybe he just took some time to adjust to the park and his new surroundings. If he can hit that well going forward, what better do you think you'll find in Abreu?
  13. They also have two days off because of the Colorado trip. I would bet that the starting pitching gets an extra day or two, or is shuffled around a bit to get lined up, but I doubt we'll see guys like Webster or Wright starting.
  14. In all fairness, Pedroia does beat the s*** out of himself on a daily basis.
  15. f*** up baseball? The point of the second wildcard was to make the game more exciting for more teams down the stretch. How exciting are things now? Texas, Tampa, Cleveland, NYY, Kansas City and Baltimore are all still in the hunt. It is September 21st, and 9 of 15 teams are still very relevant.
  16. Red Sox v Pirates World Series would be my pick -- both franchises deserve it. Red Sox v Dodgers would be a huge win for baseball... but I really don't want them to get to the WS.
  17. I disagree with this. Hanrahan, Bailey, Miller, Wilson were all late inning bullpen options that were hurt. The starting third baseman was very ineffective the first half of the year. Their top CF prospect started in the majors and pretty much fell on his face, and depth option Kalish had season ending surgery again. Their franchise DH started the season on the DL, and the team's ace spent most of the season on the DL as well. The guys he traded away -- Gonzalez, Crawford, Melancon and even Punto have been very successful. Hell, there was a national tragedy one mile away from the stadium. The reason why the Red Sox have been successful is that Ben built a considerable amount of depth. Guys that some called unnecessary, like Drew, Gomes, Dempster may not have been superstars, but when more significant players have been hurt, they've filled in well, and they've played much better than replacement level AAAA guys would have.
  18. Interesting development -- Middlebrooks is playing 1B tonight at Fenway. I can definitely see the Red Sox trying to get Napoli on another one year deal and allow the time for WMB to transition to the position, and for the rest of the infield prospects to move up the system.
  19. Between Roger, Moose, Johnson, Sabathia, Kuroda, Cone and others he has been very frequently in that #3 spot. Call him a #2 if you really want... but does any guy who isn't a #1 really belong in the hall?
  20. Winning percentage is heavily skewed because of some of those completely stacked Yankee teams. Wins are heavily considered, even still, for the HOF, but the problem is that that's what steroids helped. Even if you make the argument that he didn't use steroids to boost his performance, you can't laud him for his durability and high number of wins if he cheated to stay healthy. The other factor is... Pettite played 19 seasons in the big leagues, and only went to 3 All-star games. No cy young awards, no MVP trophies. The problem isn't just that he looks completely outmatched by his HOF peers, he was completely outmatched by his peers. Honestly, I can't remember a time when he was better than a #3 on his own team.
  21. Right -- the Cherrington Seven does not include trades. Mostly because his other trades have been meh.
  22. His 3.86 career ERA would be the highest ERA among hall of fame pitchers.
  23. I am nicknaming Victorino, Drew, Uehara, Gomes, Napoli, Ross and Dempster "The Cherrington Seven".
