  1. I could see the Reds maybe trading Joey Votto if the Sox took on a big contract in addition to him, someone like Bronson Arroyo or Aaron Harang. The Reds do have Yonder Alonso coming up, so maybe they would be more open to trading Votto. But why would they trade Votto a proven 1B, also under team control for several more seasons, to shed salary and make room for an unproven 1B prospect. It's more likely that they would package Alonso with a salary dump than Votto or move one of them to third base and keep one of them
  2. He would be a 4th OF. Anything more than that and I'd be worried. Drew is paid 15 mill a year, he needs to be in there vs. lefties.
  3. Screw Wakefield, the Sox need to sign Lackey and have a formidable 1-2-3 punch of Beckett, Lester, and Lackey. Right now who is our number three? A unreliable Clay Buccholz who finally began to get things right last season. Dice-K? A guy who was a non factor last year? Then you have Wake at the 5 spot which is hit or miss (we are all aware of his streaks) who is bound to fall apart in July, and at any rate a guy who is a terrible, terrible playoff starter. Imagine a rotation if Dice-K was the number 4 and Clay was number 5? It would be incredible.
  4. I'd love to have Wagner back, guy has proved that he he still has it. Could be an 8th inning guy and would close when Papelbon needs rest. I like that the Sox are exploring alternate options with the whole LF situation and not just targeting Bay and Holliday. Did I hear somewhere that Miggy Cabrera could play LF?
  5. Its not what I want, but I figured it just an idea that could happen. You never know with Theo.
  6. No surprise in the Sox declining it, but I'm pretty sure he'll pick up his player option. He is pretty much a backup now, so he might as well make a lot of money as a backup in Boston, a place that he is comfortable with, then go somewhere else and take significantly less money. I really hope he doesn't pick it up though. We need a reliable backup catcher. V-Mart isn't going to catch 130 games a year, he isn't really a full time catcher. We saw in his last couple years in Cleveland that he was catching less and less and was transitioning over to 1stbase. How many games can he catch before it takes a toll on his offense, 100? 110? Anything over that and its detrimental to his offense. We need a backup who can catch 50-60 games a year, and I don't want that guy to be Tek. Face it, he has nothing left, he can't hit, can't block the plate, and can't throw runners out. The guy flat out sucks. There are other and better options on the free agent market for cheaper that the Sox could use as a backup catcher.
  7. The Chicago White Sox elected to buyout of Jermaine Dye's 2010 player option of $12M. Making him a free agent. Nobody is going to have Dye be their everyday OF next year, but since the Sox trade for Hermida, could it possible the two platoon next year? This is what we would be looking at: vs lefties OBP .387 SLG .508 vs. righties OBP .368 SLG .418 It's not Jason Bay or Matt Holliday but as a last resort? I could see it happening. I don't want it to happen, but you never know. He was terrible in the second half of last year, and like everyone has said he has really slipped as an overall player in the past couple years. Maybe if for some reason if we don't get Bay or Holliday and Dye is willing to sign a one year deal for cheap, then maybe. But this guy isn't my A option nor B option to play OF for the Red Sox.
  8. Doesn't make sense to me either, espically at this point in Wake's career when its proven that he can't pitch a full season anymore. Why give him a guareented contract when you can't guareente anymore that he'll take the mound 30 times in one year?
  9. I've wanted Miggy since last offseason. I'd take on Prince Fielder and his massive gut (and contract in the future) and have him play 1st next season and then move him to DH in 2011 once Ortiz hits the road. Theo can't just diddle around and fantasize with one play like he did last offseason with Teixeria, he needs to explore all possible trade options. He can't just look at A-Gon all offseason while other hitters are signed and other big bats are shopped.
  10. Based upon prioerities, I'd rather the Sox deal their prospects for Adrian Gonzalez, but if we can't get him, trading for another starter is better than doing nothing. Would rather trade for Felix, but if we can pry Roy away and get him to sign an extension, trade for him.
  11. Stupid move. Wake can't pitch a full season anymore and the Sox gave him a guareented two year deal. I hope this doesn't hinder the Sox from going out and getting Lackey or any other number three option. Wakefield has done a lot for this org, but there are better options out there. The Sox need to move on from Wake.
  12. Sox should have had interest in Hardy, but I wasn't going to trade Bard or Clay for him, no way. The has the tools to put all together, but he's been terrible
  13. I would love to have Putz here, lets not forget this guy was one of the best closers in baseball during his the last two years of his stint in Seattle. Imagine having him set up for Papelbon. That is a dominating 8th-9th inning. We really have no viable set up option, Saito is gone, Bard is too inexperienced, and I don't want Delcarmen or Ramirez pitching anything other than middle relief. Oki is an ok option to set up, but we have all seen when he is overworked he starts to get his crap kicked in. When Oki gets his rest, he is still a great option out of the pen.
  14. The Yankees where the team of 90's, for this decade there is really no clear cut winner.
  15. Pick up Gonzo's option for 2010 and re-evaluate the Sox options at SS after the offseason. We are really just fine having Gonzo at SS, his defense is superb, and when he plays in a winning environment his bat seems to pick up. I think he could hit .240-.250 next year with the Red Sox and he actually does a have a little pop in his bat. If we improve our lineup this offseason we can live with Gonzo batting ninth.
  16. The plan in signing Krecji was that he would take over for Savard and be the number Center on the 1st line. Bruins dropped another friggin tonight, to make it worse to Les Homos. Hey at least we scored and got a point out of it. Thomas was brilliant and then looked liked s***** Thomas Thomas on that first and only goal of the shootout.
  17. when was this reported? I must have missed something? Has he def decided to stay with them?
  18. if we are talking about paying for guys coming off of injuries, why not Tim Hudson then? We all know Theo will sign one veteran pitcher that is high risk, high reward. Mentioned so far has been Ben Sheets and Rich Harden in the media. While both of these guys can be studs, both will without a doubt be on the DL for 60+ days next year. One name I have not heard much mention of is Tim Hudson who can opt out of his 2010 contact which is a player option for $12M. While this is a of money, I would think he would rather have the security of a 2 year contract at $9M+. Besides the TJ, the guy has been a horse and also has played in the AL. He is 34 but he is arm should be fairly fresh having missed most of 2009. Having Hudson as your #3 would make the Sox rotation amazing. I would be in favor of the Sox giving him a one year deal at $10M and a team option fo 2011 at 12.5 milion.
  19. ^see the 2008 offseason and Mark Teixeria
  20. He doesn't get on base enough? His batting average rose 20 points last year and his OBP rose something like 25 points up to .355 last year. I think he is only going to get better as he learns more. His OBP could be .370 at some point in his career, which I'll be happy with, along with his 70 steals and great range in the OF
  21. I personally feel that way too, I was just saying that I have a feeling if he got playing time, he could end up being like Bill Mueller or David Ortiz (not to that extent) but his career could take off into bigger and better things. I wish Kotchman played more than just one position so he could have more utility. How many bench guys could he Sox carry in theory? You already have Tek, Lowell (if the Sox make a move), Lowrie, Green, Kotchman, Hermida. I really think he'll just end up being traded
  22. seem to forget about Kotchman and with how little his name has been brought up it appears to be the same with everyone else. Is it because it's hard to get any kind of handle on how they'll utilize him. Kotchman made $2.85M this past year and he's arbitration eligible for two more years, meaning that just about any team could afford him. Kotchman is noted to be an excellant defensive firstbase, I still don't know what defensive numbers to trust if anyone has suggestions I'll listen, or if you'd like to add that to the mix please do so. He'll be 27 years old for all of next season and bats & throws lefty. He's a career .269 AVG, 337 OBP, .406 SLG%, .742 OPS. The last three years he's at .279, 346, .421, .766 Most similiar by age 24 is Dave Ortiz, what???, most similar batters thru age 25 include Mo Vaughn, Nick Johnson and Dave Ortiz. He's appears to be the pre 2004 type signing/trade, Bill Muellar, Dave Ortiz, Mark Bellhorn. I think he has a good chance to see his career take off if he's ever given that chance. What role does he have for this team in 2010? A Bench B Traded C Ends up the firstbasemen with Youks at third because Lowell is trade or becomes the DH.
  23. I'd take a chance on Wang, assuming that his problems last year were pretty much caused by his injury problems and not a mechanics thing or the fact that he could just be cooked
  24. We gave up nothing for him so its a decent deal. Left handed bat off the bench isn't too bad. He'll be a nice 4th IMO if he is still on the team come the start of the regular sesaon.
  25. well Bobby Abreu was re-signed so much for bringing him in if Ellsbury got traded or as a plan B if we don't re-sign Bay or sign Holliday
