  1. He had a sub-3 ERA with the Mets from 2008-2010
  2. Drew's contract was not bad, he earned most of it even with a year where he earned pretty much 0. How is that a reminder not to deal with Boras?
  3. His offense is worth enough to me to where I could care less, but he's not bad out there. Beltran would pretty much turn this lineup into a murderer's row.
  4. I'd much rather have Beltran, his struggle is hindsight, and the Sox could seriously use the .900 OPS he had with the Mets. Beltran was and still is the right choice, because he could easily turn it on. His stats support that. What Reddick was doing was unsustainable, what Beltran was doing was just the usual things he does, which is awesome.
  5. How is it "no question"? Beltran was hitting for over .900 OPS before the trade, and coming from Citi Field to Fenway, that could translate to closer to much more. This isn't some fluke either, Beltran consistently close to .900 OPS for his entire career. I'd rather have Beltran, plus the chance that he returns to form for the playoffs.
  6. If Drew were able to reproduce his averages from his first 4 years of the contract this season, he would earn his pay easily. If he were to reproduce those numbers over 160 games per year, he would have succeeded the value by a good margin. JD Drew was one of the most underrated players in baseball, and everyone just pissed on him because he couldn't play a lot of games or whatever. It hardly matters when you're one of the best at your position when you do play, though. Yeah he sucks now, he might be done, but he gave us 4 good years, two of which were excellent.
  7. There is, I was just stating that his OPS was better. The splits in those time are sort of irrelevant. I would play Reddick, but the comparison was to illustrate a point that Reddick is playing like s***.
  8. Almost under the .600 OPS mark too, that's not just bad, it's god-freaking-awful, and certainly not working out. Even Drew has had a better OPS this season than Reddick has had since the beginning of August.
  9. I'll steal your catchphrase here, "fair enough".
  10. How? I said he was good for whatever his OBP is, .350 is decent, but he just takes pitches all the time, he's not aggressive at all, and this will be a problem when the league catches on.
  11. It's pretty much just you saying he's got a good WAR, and me stating how he's a bad hitter, and that he's ineffective sooner rather than later. His WAR is all in his defense, and his offense is all due to how many pitches he takes. You never once mentioned stats from 2009 or his current stats, just 2010. I did at first say that his 2010 was offensively was mediocre, but I was referring to his hitting, which is why I mentioned OPS/OPS+. Last year was good, his .760 OPS last year wasn't very impressive at all, but his value is in his speed and OBP, which I would acknowledge. You never mentioned anything about 2011, or 2009, the two years that are most identical to each other, and we most identical to each other when the discussion took place. Either way, he's the product of whatever perfectage he gets on base. I tell you, I don't see that being very effective a few years from now.
  12. the strikeout doesn't factor into this, it's because he doesn't swing at pitches in the zone, which sort of looks like he's only trying to get walks. When the league realizes this, and I think they have, this will be a huge problem, and he will start to pitch him more in the zone. If he can't hit the pitches in the zone, he will struggle even more and more. Most speed players do not live and die on walks the way that Gardner does. He is one of the least aggressive hitters in the league, is what that stat means.
  13. I'm glad you've got a good sense of humor, Palo.
  14. Lol, no one ever said he wasn't excellent in 2010, I'll go get those posts from that thread. You were the one who kept bringing up 2010 like it was going to be a career norm. I suggested that 2011 was looking more like 2009 than 2010, you just kept using 2010 like it was the only year he played. I agreed that 2010 was a good year, because as a base stealer you don't need to have high OPS, just OBP, to utilize your speed. However, I said he's always been a pretty crappy hitter, and is really the product of whatever OBP he gets. If he doesn't start hitting too, IMO he'll start to become more and more ineffective. He's sort of being exposed as a one-trick pony.
  15. I've never been impressed by him either, his whole game is speed. If he can have a high OBP he will be effective, no doubt, but he's not been all that effective this year IMO, he'll have to adjust.
  16. It's like a replay of a couple weeks ago. Palo's involved in this one too, think we've got a common factor.
  17. The dude is a terrible hitter and his only offensive asset is his speed. .718 OPS is like WTF, even catchers should have higher OPS than that. He was good offensively last year, but this year he's pretty much just junk. If he can have that .385 OBP like last year, that's all he needs to be a serious weapon, but when his OBP is .345, its just not very good to utilize his speed. Thats the thing with speed players and why they decline early in their careers. While speed itself doesn't diminish quickly, when they can't drive the ball pitchers will start being aggressive=less walks to add on to OBP=no chance to utilize speed. IMO, even if Gardner returns to 2010 form, which isn't out of the question, he will be washed up by his early 30s like most of the players with his skill set.
  18. You don't trade your star ace for junk, so I don't understand your logic. Gomez wasn't ever going to amount to much, and no one gives a s*** about or even knows about the under-the-table deals, including you.
  19. You guys have no idea how angry the Twins fanbase was when they pulled the trigger for Gomez and some other useless junk. Gomez was considered a good defensive player, great even, with loads of speed and raw talent, but zero hitting. It was the first of a parade of s***** moves made by Bill Smith, who is a horrendous GM in terms of trading. Terry Ryan used to get blasted for never making trades, Smith makes a lot of trades, none of them have been good, except the Hardy trade, who he then swapped for JIM EFFING HOEY. Smith sucks and needs to get canned just for all the bad trades. Seriously, Gomez for Santana when you could have had that awesome Red Sox deal. Then he trades Bartlett and Garza away for Delmon Young and some other junk, which might even be worse than the Santana trade, all things considered. I can't currently think of anything else he's done, but those are two awful trades.
  20. I'll take that. An ERA a little above 4 beats the hell of an ERA a little under 10, which is what he was pitching like for a couple of months there. I don't think he's pitching too great right now even, but he's not pitching all that poorly, and I'll take this sign of life. I'm still not ready to call him a bust. Last year he got s*** on despite basically earning his salary in WAR, and putting it together late in the season. Now he got s*** on legit this year, overall there is not an excuse for this performance, but he's at least putting it together. I won't lie though, he really needs to put it together for a full season next year, it's starting to get frustrating, and defending him is going to get harder unless he pulls out some career norm type years, instead of career norm months.
  21. Dean was so underrated. Also, when they brought Jericho back, he looked so gay. They really needed to make him the rocker look that he used to have. Benoit was just entertaining, that's why the crowds loved him so much, he was a huge attraction, so much that he didn't need mic skills bc of how intense his matches were.
