  1. 3 SBs tonite. That must have rocked Tito. Way to go, Carl. Stealing a ton of bases at the top of the lineup will mean a lot if the the middle of the lineup hits. Increasing .5 runs per game will generate more wins. It's the same thing as lowering ERA by .5 runs per game. Last year, 20% of the run differential vs their opponents was due to stolen bases by opponents. That was enough to move the team ERA 4 or 5 teams higher.
  2. Lester needs to go to bullpen purgatory.
  3. Yeah, that was a stupid f*cking deal giving him to the White Sox.
  4. Is Lester pulling a Youkilis? Don't bet against it on this club. Some of those guys are still pissed at the manager change. They don't have it so easy anymore. 4 SBs tonite for Ells-CC. That wouldn't have happened with Tito. V just opened the speedgates.
  5. Shhh. Let the FO figure it out for themselves. They're the ones getting paid.
  6. I hear ya. V has those two guys at the top for a reason. They have to start getting on base and stealing like hell. Tha means walks, which both have trouble getting.
  7. Pedey should lead off or bat 3rd. Ellsbury has shown enough power to bat 3rd as well.
  8. Bard is probably having a bout with self confidence which is 50% of sports performance. They messed his head up changing roles for him. They also did the same with Ells and Youkilis, with disastrous consequences. You can't try to fix what ain't broke. It's too risky.
  9. Ditto. Which is why Ells is trade bait. I suspect they would deal him for Felix in a minute.
  10. Papi needs to refine his HR trot. Any thoughts of a multi year contract just got deflated.
  11. Some players can't sign--their signatures are owned by companies that pay them. Mantle told me that, and gave me an autographed picture instead.
  12. I think Nava will stick. He and Ross. V likes Nava a lot. And the FO likes high OBP--at least they used to. Nava will probably DH for a few games in place of Papi. Papi hurts his foot trotting around the bases on a HR, and he wants a multi-year contract? As a personal sidenote, saw a bio last night about "Hello Dolly" Carol Channing.89 and still goin' strong. Her first movie, she played with Clint Eastwood in his first movie. They got to do a kissing scene. He showed up at a party for her recently, and surprised her. He still remembered.
  13. I think they either should go big--like Felix or maybe Garza--or do nothing. They have enough pitchers like Dempster right now. The guy will be a 4+ era in the AL east for sure. Another Penny. Garza has proven effectiveness in the AL east, so he is much preferred. The status quo in pitching is not a bad option right now. Hamels, I think, will re-sign with the Phillies for Lee money. Don't be surprised if the Yankees get another starter. Hope it isn't Felix. Seattle got burned once with the Montero hype.
  14. James read the Freeh report. I'm not a big fan of Freeh, either, who got himself into hot water in Washington doing dubious things as head of the FBI. I doubt that radio fellow who interviewed James read the Freeh report. Did you listen to the interview? Who is "influential" has got nothing to do with responsibility. Paterno, in my view, is an egomaniac who was allowed to stay at the party for far too long. But the responsibility lies with the College President and the Head of Athletics at Penn State. Emails or no. I do think James got suckered into talking about Paterno. He apparently is under contract with the Red Sox, and they did not take too kindly to his speaking his mind on a controversial subject unrelated to baseball.
  15. Crawford was overvalued by the Red Sox because he killed them in TB. But he killed them mainly with his speed--stealing them blind. Ironically, they paid him big bucks and didn't use his speed last year. That has to change. With him and Ells at the top of the lineup, they have to use their speed if this team is going anywhere. That means Valentine has to make this a more running team that can win low scoring games.
  16. ballgame over. 5-1. Gonzo starts popping. They'll take off.
  17. Papi will be OK--after their head trainer works on him for two weeks. Those two guys at the top of the lineup are bound to help the hitters below them. Ibanez just hit a salami. It might have even reached the RF grandstand in Fenway.
  18. In a low scoring game, you've got to force runs. Walks, SBs, etc.
  19. Heard somebody on MLB TV say tonite Ells--CC need to run like hell at the top of the lineup if the Red Sox are going to do anything. No SBs tonite yet. A lot of Crawford's value is built on speed, and it wasn't used last year.
  20. Yeah, that weekend in Pawtucket did him a world of good.
  21. There is, by the way, no basis for comparing Youks to Fisk. Fisk was driven out of Boston along with Fred Lynn by the Red Sox GM, Haywood Sullivan, at the beginning of free agency in the late 70s. He simply allowed their contract offers to be sent out too late. Sullivan hated free agency. In contrast, Steinbrenner was signing every free agent in sight at the time--pushing up the prices. Gene Autrey of the Angels was also throwing money around. I'm surprised George didn't go after Lynn or Fisk. Autrey got Lynn, and Fisk went to the White Sox. That was a black day for the Red Sox--almost akin to the selling of Babe Ruth.
  22. As I pointed out in the game thread, Youks hit like crap for 3 weeks in Boston before he was dealt for a bag of beans. Then he suddenly found his stroke in Chicago. I don't know what went on between him and V, but he owed the fans and his profession more than that. Predictably, the media has overlooked this, focussing on the Y-V soap opera.
  23. I heard that radio broadcast, and --surprise--I think he was misquoted. They were trying to set him up as somebody who said Paterno did nothing wrong. He said Paterno did the right thing in passing the issue to the higher ups. He was not the one to go to the cops. The athletic director and college president were the ones who covered it up. They should have reported the incident to the authorities. If you follow this closely, it's apparent Paterno is being screwed over by the media--made out to be the brunt of the blame. Don't think so. It's the guys above him. I'm not a big fan of Paterno and big TV money college football--which pays coaches millions. But after hearing James on the radio, it looks to me as though Paterno's getting too much blame in the media.
  24. Maybe the FO figures they can get the aging Dempster for cheaper than Garza. I say stay away. Let the Dodgers take him.
