  1. 100 pitches by the 5th inning is a good stat for a starter, since it's a measure of how much he taxes a bullpen.
  2. They can't keep Bradley down in the minors too long--it wrecked Kalish injured in Pawtucket when he should have been in Boston. Bradley is their 5 tool guy in the future. And the future is now.
  3. Letting Beltre go was a mistake. But the Rangers way overpaid for him at the time. Of course, it doesn't seem that way now. They lucked out. Moving Youks back to 3B was a mistake. He wasn't able to handle it full time physically at that point.
  4. Tampa Bay won it's 51st 2-1 game tonite. Iggy hit a HR off Danks. 1 for 3. RBI.
  5. Great win . Peavy looking like the guy they thought Dempster would be. Maybe more. Drew hitting like everybody hoped. Salty's timely power--he only has 10 Hrs so far--surprising. Uehara lights out closer. Who would have thought? Rubby up. Bogaerts not far behind... Hope Vic can stay healthy. He makes a difference.
  6. Anybody following the ARod soap opera? Looks like the Yankees are trying to get him banned for life so they can void his contract. Yankee fans and the NY media are vilifying him on the tweets. Trouble is, what's ARod done that's different from Braun and the others? This is his first offense, so to speak.
  7. School is still out on Iggy. Remember, Dombrowski is no fool.
  8. Lester is probably not the same pitcher he was his first 4 or 5 years. He's lost something off his FB and hasn't made up for it enough with his location and his other stuff. He said he was high on his pitches last night. With his stuff, he'll get hit. He has become a location pitcher. They might pick up his option next year, but he has to improve if he expects a big bucks extension. They have too many good looking prospects they've been hoarding who will be ready the next year or 2. Even now. I see Ruby has just gotten called up. Expect to see their best prospects called up the next two months.
  9. Rizzo has been struggling the past month at the bat. Second year guys like Rizzo, Middlebrooks and Cespedes have struggled in their soph year, while Machado has improved--though slowing down lately.
  10. Iggy 1 for 3 and an rbi last night playing 3B for Detroit. Iggy replaces Miggy.
  11. The question now is what happens to Dempster. They are not going to pull every game out of their asses like they did last night, and Dempster looks like the weak link. He needs to go to the bullpen, but somehow I don't see that happening with him making $13 million. I would rather see Workman or Wright starting. The other thing is they need some speed off the bench. I read about Chone Figgins. Can he still run? Remember Roberts saved the season in '04 with that steal off the bench. That's where Bradley could help, though he needs to play, too. Maybe against RHP. They got to use their depth to keep the team fresh in Aug and Sept.
  12. This will finally get them on MLB TV.
  13. Just like the '67 Impossible Dream team.
  14. I'm waiting for Ben to make a good trade on his own that doesn't backfire. Maybe this is the one. He hasn't had much luck in trading. Discount the Dodger deal--some media types give him credit for that, but it's well established that deal was made by Henry and Kasten. The FO, however, picked the prospects the Dodgers gave them, and they did OK there with the two pitchers. Plus they do well with the draft, and have a lot of good prospects. Ben deserves credit there, along with the rest of the FO staff, which has been beefed up some. Ben has a problem in that he replaced several guys above him who went on to promotions to other teams. Some say he was peter principled up, and is Henry's boy. When you are the boss's favorite, you tend to get more credit than you deserve, and so you have a lot to prove to everybody else. So far this year, so good. A lot of it is because the organization is all rowing in the same direction. That wasn't the case last year. They got the manager they wanted all along, and he and the coaches are doing great. Note: Didn't they trade for Carp? That was a good trade for Ben.
  15. Great situation for Iggy in Detroit. Playing next to Miggy--the offense. Iggy--the defense. Miggy-Iggy.Sooner or later the media will pick up on that. In Detroit, there is no pressure for him to hit--only to field. And there is no media to carp on his hitting while ignoring his defense. The heat is off Iggy offensively, which will probably help his hitting. The concern is this kid could be the all-star SS next year. Or he could hit .180 and be a utility player.
  16. They are getting remarkable mileage out of the likes of Holt, Snyder, Gomes and Carp. They have better players in JBJ, Bogaerts and even Middlebrooks waiting in the wings. Gomes is a valuable platoon player, but not really a full time or defensive guy. Carp has been hot, and plays 1B too. Nice pickup. Holt and Snyder give something away on defense. They'll be a much stronger team with Bogie and Middlebrooks in there against LHP (this may well happen soon), and JBJ on the bench. JBJ could have been valuable last night pinch running for Snyder, and the night before for Nava. Speed on the bases is important in close games.
  17. Middlebrooks was up around .280 until he went 1 for 15 when all the trade talk started. He and Bogie would be an improvement vs LHP.
  18. The dude brothers.
  19. Biggest news is Matt Moore to DL with sore elbow.
  20. Iggy swung a good bat in ST, and hit pretty well for a time until slacking in July--just like Pedroia slacked--by the way. They both hit about .100. He played mostly out of position at 3B. I figure he has a decent chance to be Detroit's regular SS of the future. They gave up a top OF prospect for him, so Dombrowski sees something--mostly defense, which Detroit needs badly with Miggy at 3b. Ha. It's Miggy-Iggy on the left side for the Tigers. Nice contrast in offense-defense.
  21. They just replaced Iggy at 3B with Holt--who isn't a 3rd baseman. Tonite, Middlebrooks-3B, Bogaerts-SS for Pawsox. They could be stronger right now with those two in the Boston lineup. You don't know until you try. Look at Workman. Look at Machado. They continue to hope Drew will perform up to his salary. I guess it's possible if he can stay healthy for long enough. He's not a career .220 hitter. Middlebrooks/Bogaerts will get their shot in September--or earlier with injuries.
  22. The index is how much better is he than Dempster? If he is better, he was worth the climb. The caveat is Dombrowski isn't dumb--Iggy has potential upside as a top SS.
  23. You have to like how they changed direction quickly and pulled the trigger on Peavy when the media wasn't looking. Not a peep about Iggy being on the market. Trading Iggy opens up the left side of the infield for Middlebrooks and Bogaerts, especially against LHP.
  24. Peavy doesn't make them dominant. And he doesn't replace Buchholz. Dombrowski is no fool. He sees potential in Iggy, a kid who was out of place in Boston with Bogaerts and Drew ahead of him at SS--his only real position. He isn't a strong enough hitter to play 3B.
  25. Detroit gets Iggy in 3 way to replace Peralta. Tigers must have been desperate. They are giving a top prospect to WSx. Now we get to see what Iggy can do removed from the Boston media microscope. Dombrowski is no fool.
