  1. You guys should have seen Fenway 60 years ago. No advertising signs. Seats you could eat off of. Everything clean. Yawkey kept that place like his own back yard. It was, in fact, his yard. It was called Yawkey Yard. Tom had a good heart.
  2. Aisde from Beltran not being a good fit with the Yankees, I doubt the Mets want to deal major players to their market rivals--or to any NL east teams. The Red Sox are a better fit, but other teams will be interested as well, and the Mets will take the best deal--outside of the NL east.
  3. They need to get Crawford back in the 2-hole, and trade for Beltran. Pedey can hit anywhere.
  4. Why would they trade Salty? they gambled on him, and it looks like they might have succeeded. Good catchers are hard to find--for nothing. What they need to do is learn how to cut the umbilical cord of the age on this team. Tek is a great guy to keep as a bullpen coach. Ortiz is making the decision on him tough, though he will get paid much less if they keep him. Wake and Drew are gone. Tek needs to move out to make room for the farm system. But I want him around as a coach. He's manager material--like a lot of catchers.
  5. Most likely, Reddick comes back to earth 2nd half and Drew approaches his career averages. Reddick's trade value probably will never be higher than it is now.
  6. They have to figure out how to fit Crawford in that lineup where they can utilize his speed. He needs to bat 2nd.
  7. And they're winning without CC. Theo take notice.
  8. Beckett. Isn't he the all-star? Has come back great. He's been consistent.
  9. He sure keeps you guessing, doesn't he? Kind of like Wakefield.
  10. The Phillies have a ton of lhd pitchers--I count at least 4--maybe more--2 top starters. You don't think they are thinking about the Yankees and the Red Sox? Lackey is raw meat in Yankee Stadium.
  11. Zito has thrown three good starts in a row since coming off the DL. Lackey is off-again, on-again. Today's start may have kept Lackey out of the BP.
  12. The need is for a RHd hitting outfielder. Ethier doesn't fit the need. Beltran is one guy who fits the need. Cuddyer might be another.
  13. Dick O'Connell was a great GM. Maybe better than Epstein. What killed the Red Sox was free agency--in the late 70s. While Steinbrenner was sucking up every free agent in sight, Haywood Sullivan was letting them go on technicalities (Fisk, Lynn). Sullivan was anti-free agency, and set the Red Sox back for years. They were having ownership struggles at that point--Yawkey had died--and with him went signing big ticket players.
  14. The Sox need in the OF is obvious--a RHd bat with power. They are overloaded with LHd hitters in the OF. Kalish is the right fielder in waiting. Reddick is expendable in a deal for a RHd outfielder.
  15. Hard to see the Mets taking on salary. They will give up salary to retain Reyes. That means dumping Beltran and Bay. At this point, the Red Sox would prefer Beltran for his defense.
  16. The Mets are dying to unload salary. Bernie Madoff dying. Even money they've called the Red Sox about Jason Bay.
  17. Dick Williams: Hall of Fame manager. The best Red Sox manager I've seen in my lifetime. Tough ex-Marine. Fundamentals guy. The other good one was Ralph Houk. And then there was Carregan (sp?) in the WWI era. Tito is easily the best survivor. Organization man who plays the media like a fiddle. Tito would have finished last with that '67 team. He needs lots of talent around him to win.
  18. Lackey seems to have an elbow problem which the Red Sox were warned about by at least one doctor, according to the Globe, when they signed him. I don't know what Zito's problem is. But in the steroid/big money era, there have been frequent spikes in performance in contract years followed by declines after the big contract has been procured. Part of that may be conditioning, part of it mental. Players bust their tail in contract years, then slack off after they land the big fish. What was CCs problem with his slow start? Was it conditioning, or pressing?
  19. You figure Zito's old pitching coach at Oakland is now in Boston. Plus another left handed starter is a premium in the AL east. But I don't think the Giants would do it. The Red Sox would settle for Lackey and his contract turning to angel dust.
  20. These closers want Rivera money. Only the Yankees pay closers Rivera money.
  21. The all-star break is a --break.
  22. You gotta love Wake. Great shot at 200 wins if he can stay healthy 2nd half.
