  1. I understand Obama is negotiating with MLB about lowering the luxury tax. The owners have threatened to reduce campaign contributions if he doesn't. That should do the trick. Imagine Pedey making only $6.75 million. There can't be a God.
  2. Remember Theo's grand experiment with Ellsbury--moving him to LF? I hope he remembers it if he starts to tinker with Bard.
  3. Buchholz going down couldn't be worse. They can't win this thing without a reliable 3. And right now, they don't have one.
  4. not really the right word. nobody wants the Red Sox to go back to prehistoric times.
  5. Seattle just showed the Sox how to score 3 runs without breaking a sweat. Which is usually how they score runs. Walks, errors and seeing eye hits. Time for the Red Sox to show they hit lousy lefthanders as well as right handers.
  6. How many MVPs does Cano have?
  7. I hope Lizzie didn't get killed. Saw one of those girls with a uniform and a glove in a TV game the other day that's supposed to catch grounders or line drives behind 1B. That poor kid looked like she had never caught a ball in her life. They used to give that job to Little Leaguers--kids that could catch. A kid could get hurt out there with a line drive. The least they could do would be to get a girl who has played ball. Plenty of them out there these days. But this kid did not look like one of them.
  8. Happy, yeah, but what's Tito doing playing an infielder, Aviles, in the OF? The kind of stuff that makes you cringe in a pennant race. Here they are paying people $20million and then pinching pennies... A player in the Show should never be played out of position. It's downright mismanagement.
  9. Sorry. You're right about that. That's good. Better chance to extend him. But they also have Bard waiting in the wings to close. It may come down to who can replace Bard at setup. Jenks looks like a bust. Wheeler? LH/RH combo? You wonder what their thinking is on Pap and Papi--as well. And then there's Ellsbury. He's got Boras. The Red Sox have CC, Reddick and Kalish-- but plenty of time to sort that out.
  10. The real question is "Bora$$--will you let the Red Sox lock up Pap?" The answer is no--that's not the way Bora$$ works. After all, he has a huge agent empire to feed. He needs to maximize his commission. That means open market competition. Besides, the Red Sox have a closer in waiting with Bard. The caveat is they don't have a good setup option to replace Bard-- Jenks is clearly not the answer, as was intended.
  11. Lackey #3 starter? Lackey says no--again.
  12. I have the sense that the Yankees schedule so far has been easier than the Sox'. For one, they have consistently been 3-5 games ahead in home games since the start of the season. They spent a good deal of time at home in April, for example, while the Red Sox were starting very slowly on the road. The schedule differences are supposed to even up by season end, but I'm not so sure because of the nature of the scheduling, with divisions and interleague play, etc. Were it not for the huge (10-2?) face to face advantage vs NY, the Red Sox might be 5-6 games behind the Yankees right now, since their record against other teams is worse than NYs. Is that because of the Sox have a tougher schedule against other teams? I don't know.
  13. He'll be the #3 starter if he shows something. Without Buchholz, the competition isn't great unless Lackey reverts to Angels form again.
  14. The Yankees look like a sure thing for the playoffs--barring key injuries, of course. The Red Sox look like a sure thing, too, barring injuries. The Red Sox and the Yankees suffer from being in the same division. This no doubt contributes to salary inflation. I wonder if it matters. It looks like the Phillies are the team to beat.
  15. nonsensical question. No Lester. No Pap. No championship chance.
  16. Cafardo says no. It is rare to see any of the Boston media second-guessing Tito. The next day was a day off, and the Yankees are matching them win for win. The Red Sox don't win when Pedey is not in the lineup. You can look it up.
  17. Wake will be gone next year, so that opens opportunities for another lefthander in the rotation. Theo clearly has been searching for LHPing this year, so Bedard has the opportunity if he can pitch like he did earlier in Seattle. So far he's looked pretty good coming back off a leg injury. He's being babied along, as the Red Sox do with their starters. He'll be 2+ seasons off his shoulder problems next year, and that's usually when pitchers come back fully--if they are going to. He'll get a good shot at the 3rd rotation spot with Lackey, and if Buchholz is unavailable, could be a key factor in the playoffs--where three good starters are critical, especially against the Phillies.
  18. no Pedey? no win? Can't afford to rest the guy. Maybe he should have pitched the 8th. Aceves is getting overused.
  19. That's what happens when you let the players unionize. They can do whatever they want and get away with it.
  20. There was a picture in the Globe yesterday of Papi taking a swing at bat. He looks like he has taken 2-3 inches off his waist vs last year. Looks a lot trimmer.
  21. Ocho is gonna live with a fan for 2 weeks. I hear it's Heidi Watney's girlfriend.
  22. Hey Tito, where's Bard? this is the game, Tito. Wake up.
  23. Yankees lose. Tito can go back to sleep.
