  1. Bard-Pap have been lights out 8th and 9th lately.
  2. Ells is a keeper. Whatever Boras is feeding that guy, I want some.
  3. Yeah. I noticed that. He's pitching better than Lackey or Wakefield, and the Sox decided to pass on him. They are stuck with those two guys--one because of his salary, the other because he has been around forever. If there is anything that will keep the Sox from a championship this year, it's the absence of Buchholz in the playoffs and these two guys, who need 7-8 runs to win. Maybe Buchholz will be back, or Bedard will save the day.
  4. Funny, that Globe sports editor seems to have Lackey pinned at #3. Only Chad Finn takes exception. Chad walks his own walk. Two factors here: One is Lackey is making $15 mill, and he gets every chance to succeed. The other is Bedard is on the media's ***tlist for being nasty to them in the past.
  5. Tough to win starting Wake or Lackey against the other teams ace. Even though they had hit CC pretty well before tonite. As a rule, you can't expect your #4 or 5 starter to match up against a #1 starter.
  6. Sure. But you don't know what else the Twins got under the table for Santana. The deal stunk on the surface, next to what the Yankees and Red Sox were offering. They clearly made the deal to move Santana to the NL--and to the Mets probably because the Mets have to compete with the Yankees in "mediatown" for audience. Lots of good reasons to trade Santana to the Mets. None of them really related to the offers they got for him. Funny things can happen in MLB with their anti-trust exemption. For example, how many people know that the Yankees were responsible for KC getting the Philadelphia Athletics franchise--by steering the vote away from bidders who wanted to keep the As in Philly? Not many. But the Yankees for years afterward had a cozy relationship with the KC As before they went to Oakland.
  7. No deal on Bell. They probably asked for Lincecum or Cain.
  8. I hope Abraham has his definition of quality starts right. That isn't always the case these days. Abraham's last job, by the way, was covering the Yankees in NY. Beware. I do think at this point it is about Wake's 200th win. Wake has been better than Lackey--if you go by WHIP. He had a bad start last outing, but generally doesn't get hit as much as Lackey. And he comes a whole lot cheaper. It's a shame he hasn't gotten his 200th yet. Now the FO and Tito have a dilemma on how much more to pitch him in a tight pennant race. But if they pitch Lackey, they have to pitch Wake? I don't know. Nor does anybody else who doesn't get paid to make these decisions. I defer to Theo and Tito.:dunno:
  9. It wasn't a great sign because of the emergence of Ellsbury. He just made Crawford much less useful on this team. Crawford needs to be at the top of the order for him to utilize his speed effectively. With Ells leading off and Pedey 2nd, there's no place at the top of the lineup for him. So they can't get their money's worth on him.
  10. Yeah--the Yanks were offering their top young pitchers. And the Red Sox had a first rate package. Then all of a sudden he was dealt to the Mets--for peanuts. At least on the surface. I'll bet there was a boatload of Wilpon money under the table. Selig was conveniently in the Bahamas at the time.
  11. it's an official game no matter what they do--continue or not. has to go 5 innings.
  12. is game 1 rained out, or what? should be a 7 inning win.
  13. I think the Twins got the message to deal Santana away from the Yankees and the Red Sox--both were offering better packages than the Mets gave. They dealt him to the NL, and got less--at least on the surface. A lot less. They could have gotten Ian Kennedy, I believe from NY. What does 'got the message' mean? It means what it means in the real world. In my view, the same thing happened with Holiday and the Cardinals. Parity is important in any sport. And in baseball it's hardest to do with no cap. But below the surface, I think there are understandings. Watch who Pujols signs with. My guess is he stays put.
  14. Hate to see Tito sacrificing wins in a pennant race just to get Wake his 200th win.
  15. Ha. Chad Finn said today Tito would still be pitching Timlin if Theo hadn't pulled the plug on him. Watch Theo pull the plug on Wake.
  16. On this Bedard vs Lackey thing, which has been a subject at the Globe and the Herald, Chad Finn of the Globe said today what I've said--Bedard has a better record (ERA/Whip) than Lackey this year with Seattle and Boston--and is the better #3 starter right now. He said Lackey gets hit (1.5 whip); Bedard has shown a very good curveball. Good to see Finn has taken the anti-Bedard bias in the media out of the equation. Chad is a straight shooter. The Sox are in trouble every time Lackey or Wake gets on the mound. Look at Wake tonite against Oakland. They have to score a ton of runs to win. Everybody should pray Wake gets his 200th soon, so they can put him out to pasture. Lackey they're stuck with.
  17. Chad Finn on his Globe chat today confirmed what I said that the "Theo to the Cubs" story was a twitter invention. It's a lesson that you can't believe everything you hear on the internet. Guys like Gammons and Olney have to make a living with all their BS chatter--and too much of it is made up--and then passed on as fact. The one guy I trust is Rosenthal. He doesn't pull any crap.
  18. Why not wait? So far, so good. He has pitched pretty well--let's see what happens. Hasn't had Lackey-type support in runs scored (and the media). And they'll have at least one opening with Wake gone next year. Left handed starters are in vogue. The Yankees will be lurking.
  19. They will have Ells pretty cheap after arb next year. Let's see him repeat what he's doing this year before we talk about big contracts. The guy they should deal is Crawford, but it will have to be a salary swap. Putting him on waivers told you a bit about their thinking.
  20. The job of any pitcher is to collect his salary and run.
  21. He did not have a quality start his last start. If you read my post, you would know that. Why should I believe the rest of your post? They need a barrel of runs to win with him or Wakefield. Fortunately, they get them--especially at home.
  22. This is Olney's twitter that started the "Theo to the Cubs" non-story: "It will be very interesting to see if the Cubs ask for permission to talk to Red Sox GM Theo Epstein;they could offer him a team presidency" Olney is a NY writer. Notice he didn't use the name Cashman instead of Epstein. Wonder why not. Cashman is far more likely to be interested, considering his problems in NY. The "story" came from Yahoo sports. Yahoo is also NY-based. These things mushroom on the internet to the mainstream media without any factual foundation. Who needs facts these days?
