    Hellickson at 117 pitches. Madden makes a change--but only at the right time. Tito would have changed at 100 pitches--and used more bullpen.

    Sure. The kid got tired. Why the hell make a lot of other excuses? In horse racing, when a horse goes sour, they put him out to pasture for a couple of weeks. then bring him back and train him back to form. Athletes are the same. It's called conditioning. Every manager should own a race horse. I don't think the Red Sox pay a lot of attention to conditioning--as a team.

    Kotchman? Christ, the guy didn't hit a lick in Boston. They must have paid him too much.

    Pedey and Salty are the only two guys who look awake out there. Everybody else is sleeping with Tito.

    On that broken bat play, I figure the SS either catches the bat or catches the ball. Scutaro caught neither. If that's Pedey, he catches the ball and kicks the bat. Marco didn't show a lot of effort on that play. The rules should make that an interference--batter out. The batter clearly interfered with his bat.

    Didn't Weiland pitch pretty well last start? I mean "pretty well" for the Sox. Which means the team wasn't down by 5 runs the first 3 innings. Makes sense to start him over Miller, who should be in AAA anyways.

    Just listened to a video about Bard by Bob Ryan and some other Globe guy. Ryan doesn't get it. They refuse to think this guy maybe has hit a wall--with so many appearances. That would call into question the way the Red Sox handle their pitching--maximizing appearances, not innings. The Globe won't touch that issue. The media is funny that way.

    Nice to see there are other observant people out there. You see this prevailing view in other Red Sox groups, too. But the media won't touch anything like this. They judge a manager strictly on wins-losses. Some of us remember Tito when he was with the Phillies. He's only as good as the team he manages. He adds nothing except good will with the players--and the media. And he has learned how to survive in an organization.

    Youks seems to be having a rough time this season. I wonder if that change back to 3B has been a bit taxing for him--especially coming back from an injury. A tough transition for a guy who made himself an all-star playing 1B.

    The amazing thing is when a pitcher goes sour , like Bard, Tito lacks the judgement or creativity to try somebody else. He just keeps trotting Bard out there. Where is Wheeler? Oh, I see, he isn't THE setup guy. Now you know what's wrong. They don't play as a TEAM. That's Tito's fault.

    True, the organization needs a shakeup it won't get if they make the playoffs. As a team, they are underachieving. That's always a management problem.

    This isn't over yet. TB-NY-Sox have too many games left between them that can make the difference.

    Looks like J.D. will go out with a wimper, carrying his big sack of money. A lot of season tickets in that sack.

    They didn't expect Dice-K and Buchholz--2/5s of the rotation-- to go down for essentially the season. The big failures have been Lackey, Miller and Wake. Keeping these guys in the rotation start after start, while keeping a better pitcher, Aceves, in a bullpen role. Plus they blew it on the Harden trade. The guy has pitched better than the three Sox amigos--though the Yankees bombed him last time out. My sense is Theo wasn't really willing to go the extra step like the Phillies and the Guardians. Perhaps he figured the wild card was enough. GMs do strange things. Look how Danny Ainge blew up the Celtics in mid season last year, trading Perkins.

    can't blame the hitting, folks. they are still #1 in hitting in MLB. The current Red Sox are a classic example of the importance of pitching.

    The fallacy of replacing a reliever every inning is evident in this game. You keep changing relievers until you find somebody the other team can hit. That's what it often amounts to. Never used to be that way.

    christ, the guy just needs a couple of days off. he's a good pitcher--overpitched.

    shades of gagne and timlin. a pitcher goes into a bad streak, tito keeps throwing him out there. guess what? bard might be cooked. just maybe needs a rest? i see lars gets an adgon at-bat. what's that all about?

    Yeah. It's not the hitting at all. It's been the pitching. They thought they could go with a bunch of stiffs--and it hasn't worked out. Imagine trotting out guys start after start with 1.5 whips. Those guys are getting HIT. Wake up, Theo. They lost Dice-K, and they lost Buchholz. And never replaced either of those guys. They are, by the way, still no.1 in hitting. Have been, the whole season. Somebody hang a sign in Theo's office: "It's the pitching, stupid!" :harhar:

    Somebody mentioned Dempster. 1.46 whip, last time I looked. Stay away.

    Wake--it looks like you gained about 20 lbs this year. I think you hung around a year or two too long, but who wouldn't for the money you guys get. Good luck in the future--settle back, watch MLB.com and relax.

    Somebody made the point they can't put Wake out to pasture. Lackey and Miller are worse.

    Colon is taking some questionable supplements which have clearly affected his performance. The supplements are considered borderline, but MLB has not done anything about them. Garcia? Who knows? Granderson? Teixeira? Papi? They can take lots of things that aren't tested for or detectable. I say more power to them. As long as it doesn't affect their health long term.
