  1. The Globe (Shaughnessy) this morning is turning against the Red Sox--saying they don't deserve to make the playoffs. They are also now talking about differences between Theo and Francona--which is the kiss of death for Francona. Managers always take the hit in these situations, though it wasn't Tito who put the roster together. He is responsible, however, for the team's shoddy play on the field and the disarray in the pitching.
  2. Too bad the media made no issue of this. This guy was better than a lot of the stiffs they had in the bullpen this year. Did management have a communications problem with Oki and Dice-K? Another small nail in the coffin.
  3. He got his 200 wins, and he will disappear into the sunset--voluntarily.
  4. Does anybody know what happened to Okajima? Last seen in Pawtucket? He sure could be useful right now. Did he get the Millwood treatment, too?
  5. I can just see them cutting Miller, and have the Yankees pick him up next year and put Rothschild to work with him. The key to NY's success this year has been their surprising pitching. And you have to give a ton of credit to Girardi and Rothschild--both from the Marlins. Girardi is another one of those good catcher-managers who knows how to handle pitching, and probably had a hand in getting Rothschild.
  6. The front office has lost a few key members to other teams the past few years. Also, the bench coach, Brad Mills, the last two years. These losses may have affected the team more than meets the eye. You can't expect good teams that are consistently near the bottom in draft picks to be able to draft as well as bad teams. The Rays, for example, are now reaping the benefits in their farm system of drafting high for a long time. Also, KC, Cleveland and a few other teams.
  7. Guys like Crawford and Lackey are undealable--underperformers with big contracts. That's the killer signing free agents. The contracts are guaranteed in MLB. I don't pay much attention to those media quotes. They are most often taken out of context--in some cases, deliberately, to create or heighten conflict.
  8. Who's the bench coach? Hale? The bench coach will go, for sure. This team has had two poor starts in a row. They miss that guy, Mills, who went to Houston. He must have been the discipline in spring training.
  9. sorry, i meant 04---the year they won 8 in a row against the yankees and cardinals.
  10. Yanks are now 7 up in the standings. The Sox have lost so much ground the last 10 days it's hard to see them making the playoffs if they continue losing. The Rays are playing better ball right now, and they could catch them. Or even the Angels, who are slightly behind the Rays. If one of these teams gets hot, forget it.
  11. I honestly don't see Henry doing a thing--playoffs or no playoffs. Sure they fired Grady Little--but they needed a vote of 3 out of 4 to do it. The media will have to kick like hell for any action to change the management.
  12. Pedey hit about .400 for a month, and then slacked off. Needed a couple of days off he didn't get. Now he's hitting again. You're pickin' on the wrong guy.
  13. That's what happens when you try to compete with the Yankees--at their money game. The Yanks burn that kind of money, too. They're still paying a lot of guys who are long gone.
  14. Yanks win the division. Sox back into the playoffs, suddenly get hot and beat everybody. Win Series. Happened in 03.
  15. Yeah, I've made that point about 19 times in various posts over the season. You have a 100 pitch limit--that's all you can throw. With Tito, it's 100 pitches--0 runs or 7 runs. He needs 100 pitches out of you. I think there are flaws in the way they handle their pitching.
  16. I think team conditioning has been a problem. Ortiz looked in great shape earlier--a couple of inches off his waist. But he has put on a few lbs recently. Pedey you know is in great shape. Salty is another worker. Beckett, too, this year. Also Pap, Ells. Guys in contract years. The rest, you don't know.
  17. I think Kennedy has a real shot if he wins 20. The Dbacks will win their division. Verlander is a no-brainer in the AL. The only question is whether he gets enough votes for MVP--some of the writers won't vote for a pitcher.
  18. Incredible. They can't seem to beat anybody. If they back into the playoffs playing like this, they will be out in a flash. It's an embarrassment. But stranger things have happened. They could back into the playoffs, and then suddenly get hot. Any team that gets hot in the playoffs has the advantage. Look at the Giants last year. They couldn't do anything wrong.
  19. The guy I'd like to see who's available would be Larry Bowa. He's on MLB.com a lot these days--one of their analysts, so he may have become acceptable to the media. I say "may." Bowa has a lot of experience coaching and managing, and is a no-nonsense guy. He can be a hothead, but he's a winner--a Pedroia-type player who was SS on the '80 champion Phillies. He will kick ass and stress fundamentals. I doubt he would be acceptable to Red Sox management.
  20. Beckett should know how to pitch to Reynolds by now. The guy is hitting .200 You don't throw him strikes. Can't be careless to any major league hitter.
