    I think this thing might be a kind of power struggle, where Henry wants a manager who is more autonomous from the FO--especially since the FO now has an unproven GM. All this 2nd interview stuff might be just window dressing to keep Cherington in the mix. It's also possible the 2nd interviews were for the bench coach. Maybe it will be Lamont. That would be a lot of experience, with Valentine, in the dugout. Maybe what they want. Just speculation--media style.

    It's taking so long because there is apparently a difference of opinion on what the Red Sox need for a manager. Cherington thinks they need another Francona. The higher ups are looking for a guy with ml managing experience who can run the team properly and manage a good game. They may also want a guy who is more independent of the FO--which may be the whole crux of the matter.

    Looks like a power struggle going on here. Cherington vs Valentine/Lucchino. Has Cherington inherited Epstein's power? If no-name Lamont gets the job, the media will go bananas.

    Unless Bard moves to starter, I don't think they'll sign any closer. More likely, they'll sign a cheaper setup guy. Street is a gamble because his arm is fragile.

    Olney (from MLB Trade rumors) says it'll be Valentine because Lucchino has more sway over Cherington than he did with Epstein. It's nice to know the inmates aren't running the asylum, Buster. If it isn't Valentine, they'll be an awful lot of explaining to do.

    I think it's possible they might give Bedard another shot if his knee has come around. He pitched pretty decent in Boston--when he could pitch. That knee injury persisted, and maybe the off season has put it behind him. Beane probably wants too much for Gio, and all those free agents are way overpriced. Still, I'd rather put big bucks in a pitcher than Papi, who is 36 and may or may not have another good year. They need another solid starter because Beckett and Buchholz are fragile.

    If it weren't for that Moneyball book, I wouldn't know who was pulling the strings in the dugout when Tito was managing. The media doesn't go there. But the book revealed how much Beane was into every game the As played--micromanaging. It follows that Epstein and the FO was having similar input with Tito.Recall that Tito had been bench manager in Oakland, so he knew how the system worked. That's probably why he was hired. Really, it points to what this manager hiring is all about--FO control. Valentine clearly is beyond that compared to the other guys who were interviewed. Also, I think Lucchino and Henry are telling us, wanting Valentine, they want less FO in the dugout. Plus more experience to balance the lack of experience with the new GM.

    I don't think the Sox will spend big bucks on a closer.Not with Bard available. They might sign a lesser reliever for cheaper money as Jenks insurance protection. There are a lot of closers available out there, and they could get somebody cheap, which might change the dynamic.

    Yeah, they have to hire Bobby, or it would be another excuse for the Sox to be media fodder. It bothers me a little that Cherington and Valentine are personality opposites. Ben looks more reserved and introverted. Bobby is the extrovert--free with his opinions. Is this a problem? Probably not, since Lucchino is probably more like Bobby than Ben, and is a good friend. Ben will probably be on the hot seat more than Bobby, since Ben is a newbie at the GM job. Besides, Bobby is a closet Saber guy, a disciple of James when Ben was in school. They will not be far apart on stats, but Ben has to stay out of the dugout. The mystery to me is why they waited so long and had all those other interviews. Looks to me like the bosses gave Ben a bit too much rope.

    The Sox have two right fielders right now--Kalish and Reddick. Trade bait there. Gio G. is a star on the cusp. Maybe Beane will take Swisher from the Yankees for him--a guy he has always coveted. I think Shipley's leaving is a sign they want to upgrade their Latin America effort. Minaya could be the replacement.

    I think they're lucky a guy like Valentine is available. It took them long enough to realize they need a veteran to manage this team. Valentine is not only a veteran, he's also smart.

    Yeah, you don't know what the heck they were doing there. I think their problem is they don't have a PR expert in house to help them through these things. They need one voice. Henry barging into WEEI is another example. Looking at Valentine's background, and seeing him today on video, you don't know why they went through that interview process. They obviously need a veteran manager to run this team. It's enough they've got a novice as GM.

    Could be the bench coach might be Lamont or Lovullo, though I've seen Lee Mazilli mentioned. Alomar is already a bench coach, so it would make sense to rule him out.

    I think this meeting going on right now is about Cherington just as much as Valentine: it's a mutual meeting. They are probably getting the responsibilities straight between the two of them--just so there aren't any misunderstandings. Call it the beginning of a working relationship.

    I would think Ben would come out of the meeting all smiles and approving of Valentine. He will if he wants to keep his job. I have to think he knows his authority is not the same as Epstein's. I have a feeling the era when the GM was in the dugout has ended in Boston. Few people realize this in Boston--except for those who have read Moneyball.

    thanks, Elkton. The thing I found amusing was "If Cherington approves..." The tone is it's Cherington's call. Epstein would be amused,too, reading this article. He would call up Hoyer and thank him for giving the OK to hire Sveum.

    If you want to read a hilarious article, read the one in Yahoo sports--MLB--on Cherington interviewing Valentine. This has to be done tongue in cheek. Sorry my windows 7 --the latest in Microsoft technology--doesn't have a copy and paste that works.

    The problem is that Lucchino didn't take charge of the manager search up front--even though he is in charge of the manager search. They gave the impression it was Cherington's call--which is tall order for a guy you just hired as GM. Clearly, it isn't Cherington's call, and it shouldn't be. Managers are hired two levels above. That's Lucchino.

    What's he wasting travel money for going to the DR? He should be interviewing Valentine, according to Yahoo.

    I just read an article in Yahoo sports--MLB section--that just shows how ridiculous this whole Valentine thing has gotten in the media. So now Valentine is going to meet "all day" Monday with Cherington, to see if Valentine can get his blessing as the next Red Sox manager. He is going to be put through the grinder by Cherington. If he does not meet Cherington's criteria for what HE is looking for, then Henry and Lucchino are supposed to bow to his wishes and look for somebody else. Is this some kind of a joke? That September collapse has sure turned the Red Sox into media fodder.

    There was another article in the Herald a couple days ago that said there was another "mystery" name candidate other than Valentine. That could be Bowa, since Cafardo mentioned him today. It could also be Farrell--some tweets are saying they are still trying to get him. Valentine is getting "interviewed" Monday by Cherington for the 2nd time. I suspect this time the outcome may be different.
