  1. PWNdroia brings the lulz. Outstanding! God love thorazine.
  2. I just love Talksox. :lol::lol:
  3. Lol! You would agree (if you had seen him) that he was the best defensive 1st basement you had ever seen. "It's that simple".
  4. I came too late for Williams but I would have to say he has to be one of the two greatest hitters in the history of the game. I wish I had been able to have seen him play. Lonborg was HUGE! 1967 was a magical year. Everyone loved the Hawk! Boston's own Joe Namath!
  5. What the f*** do you know rhet? Can you back your statement with OBP and OPS? j/k "Da Boomer sho did hit some taters". Most of the biggest and hardest hit balls I saw during his time in Boston were hit by Scott. Only Boog Powell and Frank Howard could hit balls that hard and that far. All of them hit home runs that would dwarf the efforts of today's big bats. *Sigh* "Back in the day" there was a big screen above the left field wall. Behind it Lansdowne St. Then about 150' of buildings. Beyond that, commuter rail tracks and the Mass Pike. Scott hit balls that landed on the tracks. Not all the time. But when he did, it would leave people sitting in their seats with their mouths a gape. "Mercy".
  6. Not an example I would have used, but well said!
  7. I guess the need to have the final word has overcome your ability to be reasonable. No one here has said that the new metrics don't have their place in baseball. I'm a Darwinist and have spent almost my entire life in a laboratory and involved in the sciences. Statistics are an essential component in almost all technical disciplines. I am not resistant to change or evolution. Christ, the evolution of mathematics and semiconductor technology (Spud stuff) have enabled all of us to be able to discuss this very topic. In a discussion of a GAME, one which was devised to provide enjoyment both for those who play and those who watch, one can not, in all good conscience, discount subjectivity (observation) and an appreciation for athletics.
  8. The I.Q. Of Talksox just went up 40 points with this one post.
  9. A century of baseball defies this comment. Some "new stats' are very useful, others, not so much.
  10. :lol: Great post.
  11. I've been pondering an answer for this thread for several days. I guess If I had to give a conventional answer it would be Fisk's HR. That was really dramatic and I recall exactly where I was that night. Having attended about 200 games at Fenway and having watched thousands of other games in the last 44 years, I have some other memories as well. The Sox had a utility player named Carmen Fanzone that spent 7-8 years toiling in the minors. They called him up in 1970 (I think). In his first at bat in the majors, he got beaned! Imagine that. He never really amounted to much and went on to a non-stellar 4 year career with the Cubs. In the fall of 2004 I was at the Wang Center in Boston for a performance of the Kirov Ballet. During an intermission, I went outside to the street to have a smoke. I heard a muted roar coming from across the street. There was a bar there. I could see people jumping up and yelling (there was a big window). I crossed the street and looked in the window. Everyone was excited because the Sox were making a comeback against the Angels. I stood there with a well dressed middle aged woman smoking and watched as Ortiz hit a game winning home run. We looked at each other with "Holy s***" expressions. We high fived and went back to the ballet. The Sox went on to take the series and eventually the world championship.
  12. All it took was 3 or 4 ridiculous proclamations by one poster!
  13. I've read the same things. Unless Scutaro get hurt, there is no need to be too worried about SS depth. And while I was in favor of resigning Gonzo, I think there is no reason not to expect that Scutaro will hit for career average. And that will do.
  14. Sabathia is twice the pitcher that Lester is. Just look at his waist line!
  15. His jammed thumb is now a broken thumb. He is expected to be out for six weeks. Can Hall play SS on a regular basis? I know he is slotted to play only a day here and there. But what if?
  16. I hope Cornell wins.
  17. Friday at 12:30 I think.
  18. That's the guy I was referring to. I just couldn't remember his name!
  19. A back-up SS is 45 miles away in Pawtucket if Hall fails to demonstrate proficiency at short. And in the worst case scenario, say out on the coast and both Scutaro and Hall can't play, move Pedroia over to short and let Tugg play second.
