He's got a 2.12 WHIP. It's not looking great right now. I'd rather have Ort pitching innings than the current version of Paxton.

The bad arm discounted contract! What a deal! I have hope that Story can make the best of things, but he'll need to show it before he wins me over. I still think he should NEVER go back to playing SS.

Does Valdez look more MLB ready? His glove isn't. We're seeing firsthand why the Sox were moving him around the diamond when he first got to WOO last year.

I wouldn't put Crawford back in the pen. The question is who do you squeeze out to put Bello back in. Wait for an injury? With Sale/Kluber/Whitlock, you may not have to wait until the second half. They have Pivetta for another year. Does that provide trade value to a small market team if they want to move him? Otherwise, I'm not sure you move him out for poor performance since he's really pitching at what is expected of him. Bello SHOULD be better than Pivetta in 2023, but there's no guarantee. Wait for Bello to really knock down that door and force a decision? As long as Houck is dealing, Bello will most likely be in AAA in the short term unless things change with the health of Sale/Kluber/Whitlock/Pivetta.

It depends on how bad he's pitching, right? If he just straight up sucks, don't call him up.

Two most likely scenarios IMO: 1. Stretch him out until he can go 6 innings. Let him get bombed a few turns in the rotation in BOS. DFA. 2. Stretch him out until he can go 6 innings. See if you can get him into the rotation. Anticipate a 60 Day IL somewhere along the way. No more than 5 GS for BOS?

I think it's more about the long term development of Bello. They want to keep him starting and give him the best chance to succeed. They also can't just DFA Kluber because it'll severely impact the Sox in the next FA class. Players aren't going to come here if they are just going to be DFA'd one month into the season. The question is: how much value is there really to have an "innings eater" like Pivetta in the rotation? If the Sox want to win, they should have high ceiling guys, not the Pivettas of the world. They've also shot themselves in the dick over and over again by yo-yoing Whitlock and Houck in and out of the rotation and hindering their development. It just seems like their overall lack of the plan, or at least not sticking to one, has really impacted them whenever one thing goes wrong. Their redundancies are injury prone players (Story, Arroyo, Mondesi, Paxton, Sale, Whitlock, etc.). That's not going to carry you through a season successfully.

Last year's cost is out the door. They didn't pick up the option for him this year, Paxton picked up a player option. If they don't like what they see at all, why keep him around? If they really want to win, wouldn't they rather have the best players available on the active roster?

He didn't really have a Spring Training, so I'm fine with him taking his time. It's been a LOOOONG time since he's pitched competitively. I don't care if the WOOSox win or lose.

Until they get a better option at SS, I think that's what they are stuck with.

Capable fielding SS's aren't hard to find. Just trade for one sitting in AAA somewhere that can barely hit. Those guys tend to be dime a dozen.

The guys in the system who can actually play a respectable SS: Nick Sogard - AAA (no pop at all, but can field the position and take a walk) Niko Goodrum - AAA (no options, will have a 50% k rate) Christian Koss - AA (a poor man's Rafaela, good glove, has pop, will k a lot and not walk) Ceddanne Rafaela - AA (great glove, has pop, will k a lot and not walk, should stay in CF as he is plus plus there) Marcelo Mayer - A (plus defender, question on when he'll arrive but not if)

Kiké is back to SS because he has the arm. Hamilton can field the position, but can't make the throws.

Hamilton is a 2B by all accounts. Valdez can't play 2B from what I've seen. He's the worst 2B that I can remember. He can hit though. My preference would be to stop punting on defense and just through Hamilton at 2B and see what happens at this point.

There are multiple options, but some of the options are pretty terrible and they are basically stuck with them for an extended period (Sale, Kluber).

I agree with this. It's kind of hard to see where they are going with Paxton. A few months ago, I suggested that things could get very weird this season. We are now witnessing it. If Houck didn't succeed in the rotation, Bello would still be up. It's not a bad problem to have though. I think we may see a phantom DL spot for Sale/Kluber. Maybe poor performance moves someone to the pen? Paxton DFA?

He had 2 below average starts. I don't think him being sent to AAA is the end of the world here. They are going to run Kluber out there every 5 days at least through the ASB unless he gets injured. I think they are stuck with Sale for the whole season. They aren't going to take Whitlock or Houck out of the rotation right now. Would they really move Pivetta out of the rotation if Bello can't go 5 innings? It's Pivetta/Houck vs Bello. Pivetta provides innings and gives the overused bullpen a little break. Houck has been arguably the best Sox starter this season. Why take him out of the rotation for Bello? I'm not sure Bello would be better than what Houck is currently doing.

Drohan is really on a roll this year. Wonder how long they keep him in AA? Wait until a midseason callup to give him the AS recognition?

They thought he was ready? The rotation was in rough shape and needed his help. Now he's back in AAA for another 10 days before he can be called up again.

@SoxProspects Ryan Fernandez allows a lead off single then strikes out the side in his return to Double-A. One of the other pure relief options in AA.

@SoxProspects Two perfect innings for Jacob Webb out of the bullpen today. The 24-year-old righty has a 1.74 ERA over 10.1 innings with 11 strikeouts to five walks at Double-A this season. Webb was one of the long shot 40 man roster guys last November. I wonder if he'll pop this year. Probably makes AAA soon at this rate.
