From MLBTR: The Twins have engaged in talks with the Red Sox, with Boston keeping an eye on righty Ervin Santana, according to Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer-Press. But the teams do not appear to be lining up at the moment. Meanwhile, Minnesota still needs to decide if it wants to keep useful veterans around its talented but not fully realized core, and Berardino wonders whether it will end up making sense to part with the final two years of Santana’s deal now that he’s pitching fairly well. One factor in the Twins’ decision making will obviously be related to the financial ramifications of any deals, but now-acting GM Rob Antony says that there isn’t a mandate to trim payroll. As Berardino tweets, Antony says that the organization doesn’t “have financial problems” in need of resolution at the deadline. Twins should also hold out for the best deal possible.

The Minnesota Twins hope to land a highly regarded prospect in any deal for Ervin Santana, but would take less if a team is willing to take on the remainder of the right-hander’s $28 million salary after next season, reports Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. He then goes on to say that it'll probably be the Royals or Orioles.

No, I get it. There are some serious concerns with Pomeranz. I just don't believe this was an overpay. It seems like there aren't any pitchers available that don't have any concerns. It all goes back to the point that it's easier to find pitching in the offseason and they should have grabbed another guy then.

So the movement caused from him pitching didn't cause this injury and it is completely unrelated to him being in the game?

He's been a reliable reliever for the most part since 6/1/15. That's more than we can say for most guys we've thrown out there.

I'd pay extra for the Twins to pick up his 2017 option so that he's not on our roster next year either.

No no no. If he pitches like 2016 Price, it'll be ok for Pomeranz. However if Price pitches like 2016 Price, it'll be completely sucky and unacceptable.

He's a different pitcher than he was 7 months ago.

I don't knock the 2013 workload. I'm just saying that all those miles have added up and his arm needs to be managed better.

I'd do it with Kimbrel, just not with Koji. Age is a factor here.

So if every trade for a SP is an "overpay," maybe none of them are overpays? Maybe that's closer to market rate?

Well, the A's made a few offers and apparently they were bad enough that Dombrowski hung up the phone and looked elsewhere. Now, if a comparable starter gets dealt at the deadline for a cheaper option than Espinoza, Dombrowski will have egg on his face. Right now, it looks like he paid market price for a starter.

I believe that Dombrowski looked into doing a larger deal, but that no one was made available. I also want no part of Sonny Gray right now. He's struggling and doesn't seem like he'd help us at all this year. I agree that there doesn't seem to be that perfect fit out there. The Braves don't want to move Teheran because they need to field a team next year when they open the new stadium. The White Sox are still in it for now. The Guardians have been playing too well for them to move anyone. The teams that are looking to sell have no arms that are worth spending top prospects on.

That's not necessarily true. I give more weight to stuff on the Fangraphs Tribune and to other reliable sources than to whatever gruel a beat reporter is trying force down my throat.

Based on the asking price around MLB for starters. Braves wanted Moncada and Espinoza and more for Teheran. A's wanted Espinoza for 4 months of Hill. I can imagine that this trade was the best value out there.

Why would Guerra be that high? He's fallen off a cliff this year. Maybe I'm just confused by your rankings as they list Groome and Kopech twice...

It wasn't an overpay. It was the going rate.

He's a good value, you just have to manage his innings better. He's not a workhorse you can trot out there whenever you are in a close game. Maybe the Carson Smith injury really forced the Sox into a tough spot, but you need to give some other pitchers the chance to have high leverage innings (Ross, Hembree, Barnes, etc.). You can't keep throwing the same 2-3 guys out there every day.

But if you worry about "potential value," you'd never trade any prospect because the future is uncertain.
