Did you know that the pitching staff in 2015 wasn't the same as the pitching staff in 2016?
Miley/Porcello/Clay/Kelly/ERod
Price/Porcello/Wright/ERod/Clay-Pom
If only Swihart could've caught Price and Wright in 2016! ERod's numbers were actually better in 2015 too!
He was a great player. I just don't see him being close to that player going forward. I think Sox fans have deified him over the years. In a recent gamethread, I stated that Altuve is the player Sox fans think Pedroia is or was (he's a destroyah, kid).
If playing 100% means diving into 1b for no reason, then Pedroia definitely did that. He always had a dirty uniform whether it needed to be or not. He was a short white guy who looked like he played a full 9 innings 162 games a year (even though that wasn't necessarily the case). Boston ate it up.
He was very valuable through 2013 and had a surprising resurgence in 2016. 3 of the last 4 years haven't been worth the money though.
Baseball America had him much lower than other publications. The SoxProspects podcast mentioned that others had him closer to the 60's (Law, ESPN, MLB, fangraphs).
Because they've mainly selected college pitchers and hitters the past few years. They needed to stock up on young guys with high upside bats. Their farm system has a severe lack of power and they are trying to correct it.
I don't know. This seems more like personal perception more than anything else. I don't believe he's a huge charity guy or at least no more than any other player.
To your point Spud, Blake was a 5.9 dWAR player in 2015 even with all of his passed balls.
910 OPS after August 15th.
He's being given a shot now so let's see what he can do with it.
Suspect?!?!?
Sale, Price (CY winner), Porcello (CY winner), ERod, Pom
Pomeranz isn't that great, but if he pitched like last season, every other club would love to have that as a #5. I'm not sure what you're expecting out of a rotation.

Moreland was good last year until he broke his toe. He's been outstanding so far this year. I'm glad they kept him around. A clean-up hitter in 2018 isn't the same as a clean-up hitter in 1988.
I don't believe he has to be an ace. If he can stay healthy and pitch a large chunk of innings each year without being a disaster, it's a net positive for the Sox. You have to pay a premium to bring in FA's. Sometimes the contracts don't necessarily translate to performance on the field, but the Sox have been inept at developing front line starters my whole lifetime. It was a risk they needed to take.
I've been really busy the past few days and haven't been able to keep up with everything. I saw a few posts about Pedey being out and figured he had to get additional surgery or something. However, if it's just inflamation, I can't say I'm really surprised. He's just going to have to get back into it slower than he wants to. I think if they hold him back now, he'll have a better chance to contribute this fall.
I don't see him being a substantial asset for the next few years, but his defense should keep him at least at replacement level and I think they are stuck with his contract for good.
