  1. https://www.eagletribune.com/sports/local_sports/mason-c-j-chatham-continues-his-ascent-in-portland/article_b5f6165c-acda-523a-a0b7-8f1f716bdeb0.html Nice little article on CJC.
  2. Maybe he sticks around in Oakland for a while if ownership weren't turds, but Dick definitely had a shelf life. For all the reasons stated, I just can't call him the greatest Sox manager of all time. I just can't. He was a very good manager for the Sox, but I think Cora and Tito (slam dunk future HOFer) were much better. To me, Dick was basically the same as Joe Morgan in terms of Sox manager ability.
  3. My problem is that the manager gets too much credit in this case. He was an ok manager for the Sox. He wasn't the reason they had the Impossible Dream. The reason they had success was the young players who were on the roster. If you want to give 20% of the credit to the manager, fine. However, people talk about Dick Williams as if he was the greatest thing the Sox ever had. It just wasn't the case. The reason Dick made the HOF wasn't because of the Sox, it was because his next managerial gig was for the A's who were a budding dynasty at that point.
  4. I don't think anyone is underestimating any team once they get to the Conference Finals.
  5. Every starting player was 25 and under except for Yaz (27). That team was really young. George Scott, Rico, Yaz, Tony C, Reggie Smith and Hawk. Those were 6 really good to great players that were the real foundation of what made 1967 special and were all just really starting their careers. The only reason that group didn't see sustained success together was because the pitching was very mediocre. To give the majority of the credit to Dick Williams and not the young players that matured and gelled together is just absurd to me.
  6. Because only the best of the best are in the HOF. LOL Also, the case I'm making is that Jimmy was a better Sox manager than Dick.
  7. Nah, he got lucky and inherited a young team of budding stars. The players had more to do with the 67 magic than Dick. People really overstate his contributions.
  8. Jimmy: 2 Sox seasons over 90 wins Dick: 1 Sox season over 90 wins Jimmy was better
  9. Travis hit tater #2. Bretz hit #4 in 10th inning to put PawSox ahead.
  10. Baltimore has been empty a lot the past decade or so. Nice park, but s***** baseball to watch. I'm not surprised that baseball's attendance is down. The sport is too slow and fewer kids play little league now. Once the boomers start dying off in droves, this sport is going to see a massive correction.
  11. I'd say there's no shot for him to play OF, though they did put Youk out there once in a while (runs off and pukes in a bucket).
  12. Chavis has played 0 innings professionally in the outfield.
  13. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/april-attendance-matters-for-mlb/ Attendance in April isn’t likely to make or break a team’s season at the box office. Numbers generally trends upwards from the beginning to the end of a season. Nor is that surprising: the weather gets better, kids get out of school, and the games generally have greater playoff implications. April’s attendance numbers are more often based on a combination of expectations and tradition. Teams that are expected to be competitive — the Cardinals, the Dodgers, the Giants — are going to sell a lot of tickets. As the season progresses, of course, clubs that fall out of a playoff race can expect a decline in attendance relative to their more competitive seasons. Conversely, teams that have surprisingly good years can see increases.
  14. I see a lot of empty seats when I watch.
  15. 1970's, same with 10cent beer night. There were 4 in the 1970's, I think. Last one was on a Dodgers ball give away night in the 90's.
  16. There hasn't been one of those since before you were born. Since 1980, there's only been one.
  17. Isn't he still dealing with injuries too?
  18. I had my son wear a Sox jersey while watching one game and they were blown out. I never put that thing back on him.
  19. Setzer seems like a solid player. Definitely stuck as a 2b, but wonder if he eventually gets a cup of coffee.
  20. You only can beat the teams you play.
  21. He has a better shot of being a decent MLBer than Blake Swihart IMO.
  22. .600 is straight bench material.
  23. Isn't attendance always down in spring due to bad weather?
