Vaz was nothing but a backup in HOU. If you look at his overall numbers, Vaz may not be a top 20 catcher anymore. Defensively, he has fallen way off too.
Is McGuire the long term answer? No. Is Wong? No. Maybe in a few years either Hickey or Brannon can be their guy. Until then, they can either find some defensive first guys on the cheap or they'll have to likely trade for somebody. The Sox won in 2013 with Ross and Saltalamachia as backstops, so they don't need a dynamic player at the position to be competitive.
