If that's the case, Casas wouldn't be part of the equation. He probably won't have a break out season until 2024 or later. May as well get a veteran FA who can come in and guarantee 2.5 fWAR or whatever. With Casas, we're not sure what he can do just yet.

If they are on the field in a MLB stadium somewhere, their prime isn't wasted. If they are sitting at home playing Xbox, their prime is being wasted. It's nonsense that you waste the prime of a player on a team that isn't in WS contention. If they win 88 games and are close to a WC spot, is that not good enough for a player like Bogey?

Think about the teams that have won the offseasons in years past. How does TOR feel about Berrios? How does TEX feel about their 2021-22 offseason signings and winding up well out of the playoffs? Free agency alone hasn't helped the Angels much has it? Is COL happy about the first year of the Kris Bryant era? How did DET do with Baez and ERod? PHI did well with Schwarber, but what about Castellanos' larger contract? MIA is already unhappy with their small splurge on Soler and Garcia after only one year. It's easy to look at a list of players and say "Bloom, go get some guys," but I'm not really sure that's the best way to turn things around.

How many FA? I'm just saying this isn't a great year to go from last DAMN place to 100+ wins. The pitchers that should be available to the Sox will be a combination of old, injured and overpriced. I think there are some decent second tier options like Bassitt. I don't see the Sox getting an ace except by trade. Will Bloom go that route? I'm not sure. The everyday players are ok, but there are no real knock your socks off options unless you are going to sign Turner or Judge and I don't think the Sox will go that direction. I think the Sox need to: 1. Solidify the foundation for the future: extend Raffy? 2. Bridge SS until one of the younger guys can take over in a few years: Xander? 3. Evaluate which prospects in their farm they are willing to sell high on and deal for controllable MLB guys: Rafaela? 4. Make a long term plan for Houk and Whitlock and stick to it. 5. Evaluate younger pitching prospects for potential ability to stick as late inning arms: Ward? Mata?

The only issue is that this isn't the FA class to turn things around.

I think the injuries played a bigger part than performance. Drafted in '16 as a 17 year old, 50 innings in '17, TJS, 4 innings in '19...

Pitching prospects tend to be more volatile than hitting prospects, plus Groome lost a lot of his stuff after his surgery.

Beni was a college guy. People liked him, but he wasn't really seen as a sure thing. Nomar was taken 12th, so that hype was definitely further behind. The hype for those guys developed after they started hitting in the minors.

Lawlar was highly rated at the time, but was behind Mayer. It was kind of a shock that Mayer didn't go 1/1.

Well, the average male height is 5'6" and MVP is definitely taller than that. Only YOTN could really confirm how tall MVP actually is, unless MVP was wearing lifts that day.

Per @redsoxstats, his luxury tax is only approximately $700k currently shown as adjusted on Spotrac. If they DFA'd him, it's not big deal.

His most games played at any one position in a single year was 85 prior to coming to the Sox. This isn't a hill I'm going to die on, it was just to refute poster's point, but it wasn't going to do any good anyway.

Kiké was nothing but a backup until he came to Boston. Vaz was nothing but a backup in HOU. If you look at his overall numbers, Vaz may not be a top 20 catcher anymore. Defensively, he has fallen way off too. Is McGuire the long term answer? No. Is Wong? No. Maybe in a few years either Hickey or Brannon can be their guy. Until then, they can either find some defensive first guys on the cheap or they'll have to likely trade for somebody. The Sox won in 2013 with Ross and Saltalamachia as backstops, so they don't need a dynamic player at the position to be competitive.
