  1. The way they've played so far I would have to agree. Looking forward to the Winter Classic.
  2. The Rangers definitely needed another SP, but losing Millwood won't help them.
  3. I don't think so. He was terrible in Rookie League.
  4. That's more than a fair offer for Johnson. I believe Smoak is a little overrated, but Feliz looks like he's going to be a stud. They're both very young, too.
  5. Good deal for the Yankees. Granderson hits for power, runs the bases well, and is a good CF. His numbers are sort of all over the place, but he's going to love right field at Yankee Stadium. I don't really know what to make of Edwin Jackson. I think he'll regress slightly. But you never know. Look at what Brad Penny did in the NL West. Scherzer will wind up being better than Jackson, IMO. I think Schlereth was rushed to the Bigs last year. If he can improve on his command, he'll be filthy.
  6. Bay and Figgins could possibly put the Mariners in contention in that division, assuming they get Washburn back and add another SP.
  7. It is entirely the point. I would not necessarily say that 2001 showed a definitive power spike. He hit 18 HRs as opposed to the 10 from the previous year, yes. But he also hit 17 doubles as opposed to the 36 the year before. There is a power spike in 2003. There is a dramatic power spike in 2004. Again, how did that happen? You have your theory. I have mine. Let's leave it at that.
  8. Since my conclusion is based on the premise that Ortiz started using in 2003 or 2004, and since you reject that premise, I cannot objectively prove it to you.
  9. Yes, you can. When your reflexes improve and you start to tear the cover off the ball, pitchers will take a different approach with you. And then you have to be more selective at the plate. Barry Bonds was great at getting on base before he used. But look at what happened to his OBP from 2001-2004. .515 OBP .582 OBP .529 OBP .609 OBP How did that happen? Sammy Sosa is an even better example. Before 1998, .340 was his best OBP. Then, all of a sudden it was .377, .367, .406, .436, .399. How did that happen?
  10. I already did put two and two together. He used and became a great hitter.
  11. I think he started cheating when he came to Boston and met Manny. How does it not have bearing on the discussion? Ortiz didn't become a great player until he started using.
  12. I think it does have bearing on the discussion. How did Ortiz become a low risk/high reward player? By cheating.
  13. Jacko and Gom are right. Ortiz took steroids. To believe otherwise is naive.
  14. I also do not see how crying after what must have been a devastating loss means he's a pussy.
  15. Didn't see the interview, but I just read Verducci's feature on him in SI. I liked the quotes about him from Schilling and Selig. As much as I hate the Yankees, I can't really bring myself to hate Jeter. The man has class.
  16. If Tejada's defense had been better, he certainly would have been the better option. But he could be declining fast in the field. It's definitely possible, but I choose to look at his much improved plate discipline as a sign of him figuring things out.
  17. Have to hand it to Kobe. That game-winning shot was pretty cool.
  18. His OPS+ was 111. How is that pedestrian? Only a handful of SS's had better years. One thing I think is being overlooked. Scutaro nearly doubled his highest walk total this year. That's no accident. It means he's finally become a patient hitter. A little late in his career, yes, but again 57 BBs to 90 BBs is no accident - and I don't think it's an aberration either. On the other hand, the .400+ SLG probably is an aberration. But he could coneivably do it again playing at Fenway. I really think the disgust towards this signing has been overblown. If Scutaro provides solid defense and is league average at the plate, he will help this team.
  19. Neither. You live in New York! Get pizza.
  20. The other Sox rotation 1-4 is pretty beastly. Peavy, Buehrle, Danks, and Floyd.
  21. Johjima wouldn't have been a bad option.
  22. We'll be sure to do that. Not.
  23. As Dipre said, Hulett could be a AAAA guy. The fact that the Mariners and the Royals never gave him a shot is a little worrisome. But I wouldn't completely rule him out. He's had two short cups of coffee. Hard to tell what kind of player anybody is in that SSS. I would give him a lot of ABs in ST and go from there. Frankly, I don't know why he would adopt the nickname Tug either. Especially when Tim is a perfectly good first name.
  24. I did contribute to the thread. I told Dipre he should use his limited contact with Hanley to plant the seed of returning to Boston in his head. Sorry my post didn't meet your criteria. I don't have any interesting encounters. Take a chill pill.
