So the Braves are supposed to survive in a stacked division with a rotation of Jair Jurrjens (quality pitcher, granted), Jorge Campillo (30-year old who was a plan B starter last year and happened to tread water, never saw any consistent MLB action prior), John Smoltz (pretty good, but very old while coming off a severe injury), and.... what? You said it, no Tim Hudson until August. Jo-Jo Reyes sucks, Charlie Morton sucks, Chuck James sucks, two of them have a pretty realistic shot of landing in next season's rotation, how do you expect Atlanta to be anywhere near contention in a loaded NL East with only three decent pitchers in their rotation (four or five is the normal prerequisite for a team with playoff hopes) for the bulk of the year?
That rotation could contend. Too bad it will never have the oppurtunity. Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Angels, Dodgers, Phillies. Those are some of the teams that will be chasing the likes of Dempster/Lowe/Burnett this winter. Tell me how the Braves to convince their potential signees to forgo places like those in order to sign in Atlanta? I guess they could overpay, but overpaying for the likes of Derek Lowe never works out too well, does it?
