  1. I don't think fans are losing interest just because of the lack of a salary cap (although its a HUGE issue), I think people just don't like baseball anymore. Lets face it, most guys want ACTION. It's become a football nation, they want big scores, big violent hits, and big games. A football game is like an actual battle. Baseball games are slow, are filled with a lot of standing around, and each individual game isn't important until the very end of the season. I don't think it's a bad thing, I love the tension in baseball just like I love the tension in old school horror films, but it's a fading thing.
  2. Why are you guys still watching the gamez? It's over, just in time for football season.
  3. I never said anything about it being a mistake to sign him. I said that using the "no other option" argument as an excuse was ********. I was FOR signing him as he was the best OF on the market, even considering the risks.
  4. I never said anything about Abrue, so don't put words in my mouth and I'm not arguing about whether he was worth the contract or not. In fact, I specifically said that next year will determine that, right now he's pretty much been worth exactly his contract. The reason I'm pissed with Drew is the fact that he's not performing down the stretch. It's as simple as that. You have already stated that a cold streak, not matter how long, is not a reason to complain about a player and I completely, 100% disagree.
  5. This thread reeks. People shouldn't be bitching about Scutaro, they should be bitching about Beckett, Dice-K, and the god damned Rays and Yankees.
  6. So any player who's had a good couple years is completely off-limits from criticism no matter what they are currently doing? That's ******** and you know it. No one is claiming that Drew is a bad player and that this year proves he's a failure or anything. We just are pissed that he's sucked the last 2 months. Hell, ManRam had a great on-field career with the Sox and helped win 2 Championships. Were we all wrong to be pissed at him for all the ******** he pulled?
  7. Any player who has an extended slump when the team really needs him will get heckled. We aren't talking a bad game or little slump, we are talking 2 months of mid-season baseball.
  8. So any player who sucks for long stretches of time or even an entire year shouldn't be criticized or even complained about because "they are trying"? Who ever said "Oh, well he might not be playing well, but at least he's trying!". What is this, grade school? He is getting payed to produce and he isn't when it matters most. PERIOD. It's the big leagues, you don't get excused just because you "tried".
  9. Did you miss the part where I said "When this team needed him"? Since the AB he's been getting worse and worse, in August he hit .198, .298 OBP, .683 OPS. That's pathetic. It's still a sub par year and my focus is the fact that he's completely disappeared when the team needed him the most.
  10. I never said Drew was a bad player, he has been one of the better RF in the game the last few seasons (ranked 4th in WAR for the last 3 years). However, I can't stand the fact that he can't put together a full, healthy, productive season. Right now, I'm REALLY pissed at him for not stepping up when this team needed him. The offense completely fell apart after the all-star break and JD Drew has done jack. How is that clutch? I also can't stand the fact that he can't hit lefties. I also don't believe that we shouldn't ever criticize him simply because there were "no other options". Has he been the biggest problem for the team? Of course not, but as someone getting paid $14 million and being counted on to produce, he's let this team down BIG time this year.
  11. Well, if we decided to trade him, performing well and continuing to improve will only increase his trade value, so it still helps our future. Just as important, though, it gives Lars a taste of the majors and he can get consistent ABs for a month.
  12. Just to give some good news, TB and NYY won tonight so we won't be gaining any ground. Still 8 games back. I think it's time to move Lowrie to SS, call up Lars, and let the rest of the MLBers rot on the bench. I don't want to see Lowell, Paterson, McDonald, Hall, etc anymore this season.
  13. JD has been fairly durable this season... but he's SUCKED! That's my problem, he can't ever be healthy AND productive in a single season.
  14. Team MVP right there.
  15. He's still getting over the results of having mono. He'll get stronger with time.
  16. Manny used an interpreter today for his press conference, claiming that he was more comfortable speaking in his native language. I loved many as a ballplayer, but DAMN! What a douche.
  17. I don't care about the effort, it wouldn't make any difference if the MLB backups were putting forth 150% effort, the fact is that we already know what they are. We need to use this opportunity to see where the prospects are and give them some valuable, pressure free playing time.
  18. Scutaro is an average SS that is just supposed to be a bridge until Lowrie/Iglesias/etc is ready. As for his play, fangraphs has him worth 1.7 wins (above replacement) this season.
  19. I really hope they stop using the MLB backups and give the prospects regular playing time (Lars, Nava, Kalish, etc) and that also applies to the bullpen (ie, no more Atchison, etc). If we are out of it I hope they use this time to evaluate and mini-groom prospects.
  20. To be fair, were talking hindsight. Theo took a risk when he signed him, knowing that he had a history of durability problems. Next year will be the year that decides whether he was worth the money or not. He's sucking this season, but I won't say he was a complete ripoff until next year.
  21. That's pretty misleading. Our starting CF missed pretty much the entire season, our 2B will miss 1/2 the season, our 1B will miss about a 1/3 of the season, Ortiz is old and was getting a lot of time off because of his cold streak to start the season, and even some backups missed time. The real competition JD had was a catcher who hit the DL for a time, an aging slugger who got benched a bit, SS, 3B, and backups. On top of that, he hasn't exactly been that good this season. .344 OBP, .794 OPS... With Youk, Pedroia, (and Vmart for a while) gone, he needed to step up his game... he hasn't. In Fact, he's regressed from June, with August being his worst month this season (.300 OBP, .698 OPS). Don't sugar coat it, with the team needing him desperately, he's completely disappearing.
  22. I'm fine moving Youk to 3rd ONLY if we can get a premier bat at 1B. Pena for a year with the prospect of getting AGonz in 2012 is perfectly fine with me. The thing I DON'T want is for the team to think they can just convert Vmart to 1B and get another catcher. I like Vmart behind the plate (offensively), but he's an average (at best) 1B. I'd want a lot more power out that spot than Vmart.
  23. Supposedly Beltre was playing with a strained/hurt hamstring yesterday. You gotta love the durable guys who don't want days off and will play through injuries (when possible). It just irks me even more when you see Drew scratch day after day for "sore this" and "sore that". I know it's not a 100% fair assessment, but I'm a fan and he's getting paid $14 million a year to play, so I'll rip a little.
  24. It's over guys. 6.5 out going into September with the 2 best teams in baseball ahead of us. Even a miracle won't save this team now.
