    I dont think they care who they play in round 1. I think it was much more important to have all options available for game 2 in the ALDS. If they started Hughes, he wouldnt have been available. And obviously they werent starting CC. So they had Mitre, Nova or Moseley, with probably all 3 of them off the playoff roster

    You keep talking about 1mph. It's 2.2mph of a dropoff, which is an average over thousands of pitches. Keep belittling it. But that is a massive dropoff.

    Burnett is going to need some serious tweaking in the offseason. His FB is still there. His curve still can be deadly. But his location is f***ing awful

    Ellsbury has Boras as his agent, so we know he isnt signing a club friendly long term deal. My guess is that he gets $3.5 mil or so in arbitration.

    Holy s***, that lineup is f***ing awful. Then again, it is against Burnett, so Tito might be trying to even the playing field. Watch, dumbass Girardi is going to use this game as a barometer of his playoff start. Watch AJ go out and dominate and clueless Joe put him in the 2 hole for the playoffs

    I see. So when you dont have an argument you go to ********. Listen man, the stats back me up. Now Vazquez has always been a 3 solid pitch pitcher. Good FB, solid changeup and good curve. With his loss of FB velocity, his critical flaw was that he never dropped the velocity of his change like Mussina did in his final season. Therefore, the small difference in velocity set that change up to fbe batting practice. It relegated him to two pitches, and when one of them is an 89mph straight fastball, it isnt going to be pretty

    If you are betting on Beckett and Lackey returning to form, then a middle of the order bat would be more of a need than a 5th starter

    Might be a good idea. Beltran will be in a contract yr and hasnt shown a decline with the stick, just the wheels

    No matter how much of a revisionist you wish to be, a 2.2mph dropoff is not predictable on anyone sans a player coming off shoulder surgery. And yes, his FB velocity is directly proportional to his inability in the AL East. He has always been a guy who could flash 93-95mph and sit 91. That makes his changeup at 80-82mph that much more effective. When his FB sits 89, what was a double digit difference is down to 7-9mph. That difference is absolutely essential for a pitcher. And if you look at his 2004 season with us, a dropoff in velocity as the season neared a close was directly associated with his high ERA in the second half

    Thats probably a better long term move to keep him healthy. Although it will delay their ability to evaluate and tweak his arsenal into next season

    Not sure how you call JR Murphy's season disappointing when he started showing power over the last 2 months of the season. He is 19 after all

    That's just poor analysis of the stats you're posting. Over 3 yrs prior to this one, his fastball velocity dropped a total of 1.3mph. From last yr to this yr, he dropped 2mph on average, which is a massive dropoff

    I agree with Dipre on this one. Lowrie has potential, but handing him a job out of spring training is a poor decision. His fragility and inconsistency has yet to be tested over 162 games. Until he shows something on the big league level outside of 6 weeks of production in a truly non-playoff atmosphere, then you can talk.

    The sox kinda have to pick up the option. By the time that decision needs to be made, both VMart and Beltre will be unsigned (their negotiations are going well into the FA period). So you are talking about 50HRs and nearly 200RBI gone from the lineup. And if you play hardball with him, you might drop his salary to $8 million. Maybe. But it will be hard to justify giving him a paycut when he goes 30/100 for you and is your second most consistent offensive force outside of the FA Beltre. Plus, negotiating a 2 yr deal at $16 million does you no good since he has shown some warning signs of decline. Imagine the uproar if Papi signs through 2012 then goes out in 2011 and shows that 2008 and 2009 werent flukes, that 2010 was. Having him on a 1 yr deal is necessary. Chopping his pay by 1/3 while risking losing him is not.

    I thought he would have 200IP, 200K and a 4.50ERA. I thought of him only as a durable innings eater whose HR tendencies would keep him right around 4.50ERA, ie mediocre. But his loss of stuff took a toll on his ability to even be average. After he kinda peaked up for 2 months and got his ERA under 4.50 for a little while, his stuff died again. For a solid 2 month stretch, he was sitting in the 90s. Then, the wheels fell off again and his FB topped out in the 88 range. He has to be hurt. Cause that kind of complete loss of velocity doesnt just happen overnight

    Ah, I see. Well, he is definitely a legit prospect and this yr he knows how to pitch. To be honest with you, I am not sure why every single minor league pitcher doesnt go through the rigors of the TJS training program in the offseason. It focuses on the core more than the arm for the first few months then it focuses on strengthening the shoulder then the elbow. If you have a strong core, you will become more durable and throw harder. Marshall also came back with much sharper stuff. His changeup is a legit plus pitch and his slider has legit plus potential. I think his progression has definitely brought him from being a possible pen candidate to a definite starting rotation prospect

    Marshall is a legit talent, my only concern with him is his size. He's a small framed fireballer who can get it up to 96-97mph. Thing is, he is starting to look more like a sinkerballer of late though. Flashing the 96-97 when he needs to, but mostly relying on a 92-93mph 2 seamer. Regardless, he isnt in the same ballpark, IMO, to Betances. Betances is capable of sitting 95-96 and has shown plus potential with his change and a plus plus knockout curveball. With one more yr removed from the surgery and with him finally finding his mechanics and growing into his 6'9" body, he is going to reach heights that a 6'0" guy just cannot.

    The fact is, Dojji, the AL East and Boston in particular is no place for a reclamation project. Salty would have been better off getting snatched up by the Mariners. A team that is in rebuilding mode who can afford to give the guy a starting gig and live with his growing pains.

    The Yankees have had a better bullpen mostly because they have had Mariano. When you have a guy who historically, could give you 1-2 innings of shutdown relief when you need him and almost every game in the playoffs, you are gonna have a good pen.
